261

Affected Vehicles

Condition

After replacing the Comfort System control unit (J393), the control unit cannot be coded via SVM spec/actual.

Technical Background

All new replacement Comfort System control units (J393) must be coded and parameterized using online SVM spec/actual or an SVM code. If the

SVM spec/actual returns a response of "Check Hardware", then the SVM code is required to code and parameterize the new replacement control

unit.

The SVM code can be found in Parts Bulletin 9-90. All parts bulletins are located on the ETKAinfo.com website. The link to ETKAinfo.com is

indicated by the icon seen in Figure 1.

Production Solution

Not applicable.

Service

When replacing the Comfort System control unit (J393), online coding and parameterization must first be attempted using an SVM spec/actual

comparison. If the SVM spec/actual returns a response of "Check Hardware", then it is possible one of the SVM codes listed below is required to

code and parameterize the new replacement control unit.

Tip: No main software update is performed during this SVM communication.

262

^If the vehicle is a 2008/2009 model year A5/S5 with an original control unit part number of 8K0907289*, you are NO longer required to run the

2025303/2

March 25, 2013

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 19 number 11-19 dated February 10, 2011 for reasons listed below.

Vehicle Information

Condition

Discontinuation and mixing of Audi-approved engine coolants.

Technical Background

^ G11, G12, and G12+ coolants have been replaced by an improved version.

^ G12++ coolant (for service available) has been introduced in MY 2005 for all engines.

^ G13 has been introduced in MY 2008 as factory filling and service.

Production Solution

No production change required.

Service

Identifying and Mixing Factory Fill Engine Coolants

745

1. Based on its color, identify which coolant the vehicle was filled with from the factory (Figure 1).

Tip:

Figure 1 is shown for color identification only; coolant packaging may vary.

2. Using the chart at right, determine if the vehicle has the correct coolant (Figure 2). If a vehicle is found to have the incorrect coolant, drain and

fill the coolant system using the repair manual procedures in ElsaWeb.

Note:

Coolants can be mixed, as described in the chart, but it is always best practice to change the coolant due to reduced corrosion protection

when coolants are mixed (exception: G12++ and G13 are fully compatible).

Note:

W12 6.3 engines require special G13 coolant only: G A13A8JM1. No other coolant is allowed, and no other coolant can be mixed with this

coolant.

Note:

When the coolant is changed due to a cooling system issue, the cooling system should be drained using the repair manual procedures in

ElsaWeb and refilled with water and the engine run for 15 minutes with the heater on to remove any residual coolant. Then drain and fill the

system to the freeze protection ratio listed in ElsaWeb.

Tip:

Cooling system drain and fill due to coolant mixing, or incorrect coolant, is not covered by warranty.

Engine Controls - Low Power/Won't Move After Stopping

37 Vehicle lacks power or will not move after stop

01 09 11

2003658/4

October 16, 2009.

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 01 number 08-16 dated November 25, 2008 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

Customer states:

^ Engine returns to idle speed of approximately 1,400 RPM although the accelerator is depressed.

^ Vehicle hesitates (lacks power on take-off).

Condition may be caused when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are depressed simultaneously.

Please review the driving habit of the client. Clients who consciously or unconsciously drive with their left foot resting on the brake pedal are prone

to experience this condition.

Technical Background

With the introduction of Electronic Power Control (EPC) (no accelerator cable) to fuel injection systems, an engine RPM control feature has been

incorporated into the engine electronic control system software.

Application of both brake and accelerator pedals at the same time (brake pedal with left foot and accelerator pedal with right foot) results in the

following:

^ Brake pedal function (normal at all times) overrides any throttle application.

^ Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will not be stored.

If brake pedal is applied while accelerator pedal is depressed, after approximately two seconds, engine RPMs will return to idle speed of 1400

RPMs.

If accelerator is applied while brake pedal is depressed, vehicle accelerates slower than usual (reduced engine torque).

Production Solution

Not applicable.

496

Service

1. Test drive vehicle with customer to duplicate condition.

2. During test drive, observe customer's driving habits to determine if customer drives and/or brakes with his/her left foot.

3. After test drive with customer, connect a VAS diagnostic tool and check for any stored DTCs.

^ If DTCs are found, repair as necessary.

^ If no DTCs are found, explain the previously listed technical correlation between brake pedal and accelerator functionality to the customer.

-- Brake pedal overrides the accelerator pedal application at all times.

-- It is best not to drive with the left foot resting on the brake pedal.

Affected Vehicles

Audi A4 Quattro Sedan (8K2) L4-2.0L Turbo (CAEB) Page 278

Condition

MMI screen flickers.

Technical Background

The brightness of the background lighting of the MMI screen is controlled by the brightness sensor. The background lighting is adjusted in stages,

which can be perceived as flickering.

The adjustment can be affected by covering up or shining a light at the brightness sensor, which is located next to the speedometer in the instrument

cluster.

Production Solution

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 38 number 10 - 01 dated March 19, 2010 for the reasons listed below.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

CONDITION

Customer may report:

^ At startup, intermittent no drive when selecting driving mode D or R.

^ The vehicle can be driven only in 3rd gear (Limp Home Mode).

Workshop findings:

^ In rare circumstances, if the vehicle was in motion and the ATF strainer becomes loose, the transmission may go into Limp Mode and can be

241

driven in only 3rd gear.

^ In cold conditions, the gearbox shifts with a delay. In hot conditions, suction noises occur.

^ The following DTCs may be stored in the transmission control unit:

^ DTC P0730 (Transmission monitoring incorrect gear ratio)

^ DTC P2700 (Clutch A implausible)

^ DTC P2701 (Clutch B implausible)

^ DTC P2702 (Clutch C implausible)

^ DTC P2703 (Clutch D implausible)

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Because of a design change, the ATF strainer can come loose from the guide of the ATF pump intake duct. As a result, air can be drawn in. Air

causes the oil to foam, which prevents the clutches from closing completely.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Optimized ATF filter.

SERVICE

If the complaint can be reproduced, proceed as follows:

1. Check the gearbox control unit for the above entries and create a diagnosis protocol.

^ If there are no faults stored but the concern can be duplicated; proceed to step 2.

^ If one or more of the above DTCs are stored, proceed to step 3.

2. Check the ATF level per ELSA instructions.

^ If the fluid level seems too high and foamy due to air mixed with the ATF, proceed to step 3.

^ If the fluid is at the correct level and the fluid is not foamy, open a Technical Assistance Center (TAC) ticket and contact a TAC representative.

3. Drain the ATF into a clean container and remove the ATF pan.

Tip: Catch the ATF in a clean container and reuse it after the repair.

4. If the filter was found in the bottom of the pan, proceed to step 6.

5. If the filter is still seated in the valve body, try to remove it with light force.

^ When removed, if the filter seal remained behind in the valve body or is not fully installed on the neck of the filter, proceed to step 6.

242

^ If the seal is fully installed on the filter as shown in Figure 1, open a TAC ticket and contact a TAC representative.

6. Replace the ATF filter with a new filter according to the Repair Manual.

Note:

Make sure that the magnets in the oil sump are not stuck on the underside (metal side) of the loose ATF filter and are not removed with the old

strainer. The magnets must be reinstalled in the pan to protect the transmission from metallic particle abrasion in their correct original location.

7. If there are complaints of gear shift quality after replacing the ATF filter, clear the adaptations in the test plan and then perform the GFF or

Guided Functions Adaptation Drive.

Electrical - No Start Due To Discharged Battery

27 Low Battery Charge: Excess Current Draw Location

27 12 13

2029010/1

March 22, 2012.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

The customer may report a discharged battery when trying to start the vehicle. Condition results in a no start.

40

Technical Background

Not applicable.

Production Solution

Not applicable.

Service

1. If the vehicle is equipped with Battery Energy Manager (J644) or Battery Diagnostic Manager (J367), please perform TSB 2025360, 27 Low

Battery Charge: Diagnosis Tips and TAC Instructions before continuing with this bulletin.

2. Verify the battery is good, using one of the below TSBs, depending on vehicle equipment:

^ TSB 2023282, 27 Battery testing and charging - vehicles with BDM (J367)

^ TSB 2023330, 27 Battery testing and charging - vehicles with BEM (J644)

^ TSB 2023266, 27 Battery testing and charging - vehicles without BDM or BEM

3. If the battery is defective, replace as per the instructions in the applicable TSB.

4. Determine if a draw currently exists on the vehicle by using an ammeter with an inductive pickup, such as the 5051B, or similar tool, such as a

Fluke Meter, to check battery draw using the steps below:

a. Start vehicle and operate all consumers on vehicle (radio, lights, heated seats, door locks, sunroof, power liftgate, etc.)

b. Shut off vehicle, open left and right front doors, hood, and rear lid. Manually latch all opened items to gain access to fuse boxes.

c. Zero the ammeter and attached the amp clamp to the negative battery cable. Lock the car using the remote and observe the ammeter, which

should spike briefly as the doors are closed. This will confirm the ammeter is operating correctly. The vehicle may also provide a confirmation

beep to confirm all doors are latched, provided the option is enabled in the MMI (if applicable).

d. After 2 hours, the ammeter should read under 0.040A (40mA).

If the reading is above 40mA, attempt to locate the source of the excessive draw by proceeding to step 4.

If vehicle does not exceed maximum sleep state current draw, perform a long term (overnight) measurement test. Record the long term

measurement using MIN/MAX setting of scan tool. If the long term measurement still does not exceed the maximum sleep state current draw,

proceed to step 10.

Tip: Periodic spikes in current draw are normal.

5. To determine the potential source if the current draw, measure the voltage drop across the vehicle fuses using the VAS Scantool multimeter, Fluke

multimeter, or equivalent.

6. Using the "mV" scale on the multimeter, measure the voltage drop across fuses by placing the positive lead on one side of the fuse, and the

negative lead on the other (Figure 1). Take absolute value of reading of voltage drop (ignore negative signs) and then reference voltage drop chart to

determine how much current the circuit is currently consuming. See Identifying Cuffent Consumption with Matrix attachment.

Tip: Due to the operation of CAN Bus communications, it is no longer possible to simply pull fuses to determine the location of a draw, as this

action can result in a bus wakeup and invalidate the test.

41

7. Continue this process until the fuse with an inappropriate amount of draw (over 40mA) is discovered.

8. Once fused circuit is identified, use service repair and wiring diagram information in ElsaWeb to identify all components on that circuit.

Disconnect the components from the circuit one by one and allow the sleep current to stabilize after each disconnection.

9. Measure the vehicle current consumption and voltage drop across the fuse again. If the values are now within the normal range, the component

causing excess draw has been identified. If the values are still too high, repeat steps 5-7 again until the component is identified.

10. If it is necessary to contact TAC for additional guidance, please prepare the following information before opening a contact. If TAC assistance is

not necessary, proceed to the next step.

^ How many times is car in for a battery concern?

^ When did the vehicle come in?

^ Was it towed in or jumped?

^ What day did the customer have the concern?

^ Is/was the date/time in cluster correct? If not, what was/is the date/time displayed?

^ When did you start working on the car?

^ What is the battery serial number in the vehicle?

^ Are there any other electrical concerns on the R.O.?

^ Attach a full GFF Log with complete battery history data and Keep Awake readout (For vehicles equipped with J367).

^ Attach pictures of the amplifier for Audi Q7, A4 Avant, or A6 Avant vehicles if the amplifier shows no obvious signs of water damage.

11. Before returning the vehicle to the customer, test the battery state of charge and verify that it is above 85%. If the SOC is below this value,

charge the battery until at least 85% is achieved.

Warranty

This TSB is informational only and not applicable to any Audi warranty.
