September 1, 2010

Supersedes Technical DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR Group 01 number 10-09 dated June 1, 2010 for reasons listed below.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

643

CONDITION

^ MIL on.

^ Rough idle.

^ One or more of the following DTCs are stored:

^ DTC P0300 (Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected).

^ DTC P0301 - P0312 (Cyl. 1 Misfire Detected - Cyl. 12 Misfire Detected).

^ Engine may have reduced performance without significant loss of power or stalling.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Misfire faults causing MIL illumination can occur for a number of different reasons not directly related to ignition coil operation. Proper GFF

misfire diagnosis must be followed before replacing any ignition coils.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Improved ignition coil since 2008 model year.

SERVICE

Obtain information from the customer

To repair the vehicle correctly, please try to obtain as much information as possible from the customer about the symptoms of the condition and

when it occurred.

^ In what situation (turning, etc.) does the condition occur?

^ Under what environmental conditions (road conditions, weather, temperature, start conditions, etc.) does the condition occur?

^ What is the operating situation of the vehicle (activated electrical equipment, gear selection, etc.) when the condition occurs?

^ Can the complaint be reproduced?

Workshop procedure

1. Read out the data memory of all engine control units, and note the environmental conditions on the DTC log.

a. If there are other entries in addition to combustion misfires, address the other entries before addressing the cylinder misfires.

b. If DTC P0301 - P0312 (Cyl. 1 Misfire Detected - Cyl. 12 Misfire Detected) is accompanied by P1250 (Fuel level too low), it is likely the faults

occurred due to a low fuel level and not a malfunction of the coils.

c. Review all applicable TSBs related to cylinder misfires and ECM software improvements before diagnosing the misfire condition. For example,

if data shows that a DTC was set during cold start, search ElsaWeb for TSBs related to cold start misfires.

2. Try to duplicate customer complaint based on the environmental conditions at the time the DTC was set. The freeze data gives important

indicators for the traceability of the complaint, in particular if it occurs sporadically or at cold start.

3. Review the vehicle repair history for previous misfire or maintenance service that could be related to the current complaint.

4. Observe the requirements of Guided Fault Finding. Perform Guided Fault Finding in full according to the proposed sequence (test plan). Do not

skip any steps.

5. Complete Guided Fault Finding correctly and set the readiness code.

644

Tip: This is important to ensure that no subsequent faults occur due to the misfire.

6. In the case of single cylinder misfires:

a. Before replacing components, determine whether the complaint migrates to the other cylinders after exchanging the coils. If necessary, perform

a test drive to ascertain this.

b. If the misfire migrates to the cylinder the coil was moved to, replace only the affected coil.

7. Verify repair under the same environmental conditions (e.g.: engine speed, engine load value, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, intake air

temperature, ambient air pressure, voltage at terminal 30, etc.) as noted on the DTC log.

Audio System - 'Best Of XM' Not Displayed/Presets Lost

91 Satellite radio station name missing or presets lost

91 09 80

2021675/2

November 24, 2009.

Supersedes Technical DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR Group 91 number 09-69 dated September 29, 2009 for the reasons listed below.

495

Affected Vehicles

Condition

On vehicles with an active Sirius satellite radio subscription including the "Best of XM" stations (additional fee), the following may occur:

^ "Best of XM" stations stored in memory are erased from the Presets list after the ignition is cycled.

496

^ The station name of certain "Best of XM" stations is not displayed in the Channel list, even though the artist or title information is correctly

displayed.

When this condition exists, all satellite radio channels can still be heard. The digital audio stream is not affected.

Technical Background

Upon the merger of Sirius satellite radio and XM satellite radio, Sirius altered the channel lineup to allow Sirius customers access to select "Best of

XM" channels. These channels are generally between channel numbers 195 and 220.

The station data of the "Best of XM" channels is not sent according to previous Sirius specifications and therefore is not correctly interpreted by the

radio until a new station list is loaded.

Production Solution

Not applicable.

Service

Modify the station list in the radio by having Sirius temporarily change the subscription type on the account:

1. Obtain the 12-digit satellite tuner ESN.

2. Contact the Sirius dealer support line to have the subscription plan changed to the "Family Friendly" plan. The update will complete in several

minutes.

3. Request for the subscription to be changed back to the package including the "Best of XM" stations. Within several minutes the activation signal

497

will be sent, and the new channel lineup loaded.

4. Upon reactivation of the "Best of XM" plan, a new channel list is loaded, the station names can be displayed, and the stations can be stored.

Warranty

Additional Information

^ Sirius channel numbers and names may periodically change. Please refer to http://www.sirius.com/channelguide for the current station list.

SI M51 04 05

Body Equipment

June 2005

Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes Service Measure M51 201 03 dated August 2003.

SUBJECT

Windshield exhibits stress cracks after replacement of windshield.

MODEL

R50 (Cooper) and R53 (Cooper S)

2002-2006 Mini Cooper (R50) L4-1.6L (W10) Page 144

CAUSE

Stress placed on windshield before adhesive has cured.

PROCEDURE

1. Please follow the current Repair Instruction 51 31... "Instructions on cementing windshield." It is also important to follow the hot link "Work

steps for removing and installing windshields" at the bottom of this repair instruction. This hot link will refer to Repair Instruction 51 31 000

"Removing and installing windshield."

2. Use either Repair Kit for Cold Bonding Application, Part Number 83 19 0 147 371, or Repair Kit for Hot Bonding Application, Part Number

83 19 0 147 372. The hot bonding process accelerates the adhesive curing time significantly. Please follow the instructions available in the kit.

Notes:

a. Please use Cartridge Nozzle C for a 7 mm wide and 11 mm high adhesive bead application.

b. These parts can be order separately: 83 19 0 152 032 Adhesive, 83 19 0 52 035 Paint Activator, and 83 19 0 152 037 Glass Activator.

c. Please note the expiration ("best before") dates of the Adhesive, Glass and Paint Activators.

3. Perform the windshield installation inside a room with temperature of at least 59 degrees F or 15 degrees C. This is important during winter or

colder temperatures.

Important:

Failure to follow the following instruction may result in a possible water leak, wind noise, or glass breakage.

4. Remove all three old rubber spacers from the bottom left, center, and right positions. Use only two new rubber spacers (round shape, 5 mm

high) from the Repair Kit. Install each of these two new rubber spacers just below the spot welds in the bottom left and right positions. Do not

apply any rubber spacer in the bottom center position. Refer to illustration RX51 0217 under operation 51 31 000 for proper placement of

spacers.

5. The windshield must be fitted within 5 minutes after the adhesive bead has been applied.

6. After the new windshield is installed and during the adhesive curing process:

a. Please use the Anti Stretch Tape, Part Number 99 00 0 005 577. This special tape will secure the windshield and prevent it from

drooping down which can cause water leak, wind noise, or glass breakage to occur.

b. Do not subject the vehicle to unequal loading such as parking with one wheel on a curb, lifting fast cornering movement, or driving over

access ramps or bumps.

c. Do not install any vehicle trim surrounding the windshield, especially the bottom ornamental strip. If this ornamental strip is installed

before the adhesive curing process is completed, a stress crack will occur. Please follow Repair Instruction 51 31 043.

Wheels/Tires - Steering Wheel Vibration/Oscillation

44 Steering wheel shimmy, vibration and/or oscillation

44 10 02

2022563/2

May 18, 2010

550

Supersedes Technical DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR Group 44 number 10-01 dated January 27, 2010 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

Complaints of steering wheel vibration and/or steering wheel oscillation while driving at highway speeds.

This condition does not result in any handling concerns or loss of vehicle control.

Technical Background

The above stated conditions may be caused by the following:

^ Imbalanced wheel and tire assembly.

^ Tires with high road force values.

EXPLANATIONS AND DEFINITIONS

Radial force variation

The radial force is the force with which a tire is compressed.

551

Tires have softer and stiffer areas along their circumference. In Figure 2, the softer and stiffer areas are illustrated by different size springs.

If this wheel rolls on level road with constant wheel load (Figure 2, arrow 1), the center of the wheel rises and falls by the amount (x) because of the

varying spring hardness. The change by the amount (x) can be felt in the vehicle as vibration or shaking of the steering wheel.

The change of the compression force of the tire is the radial force variation.

To measure the radial force variation, a constant force is applied to the tire on a vibration control unit (such as Hunter's VAS 6230 Road Force

Measurement(R) System vibration control unit [GSP9700] or similar), and the tire is operated. This simulates the pull out of the tire on the road

surface. The variation of the radial force is independent of the turning direction and is measured as the difference of maximum and minimal radial

force (peak-to-peak value, or Total Indicated Reading [T.I.R.]).

On Audi vehicles the peak-to-peak value (T.I.R.) must be 27 lbs. or less.

Harmonic vibrations

The wheel force variations during the turn of the wheel can be mathematically divided into individual harmonic vibrations.

For an objective assessment of the tire stiffness, the first harmonic (the basic vibration) is used.

The basic vibration or first harmonic is the share of the radial force variation that causes the strongest vibrations.

On Audi vehicles the first harmonic (road force) must be 18 lbs. or less.

Warranty

Tire warranty facts when submitting tire claims through the Audi Tire Warranty Assistance Program (ATAP)

The Audi Tire Assistance Program is not an Audi of America, Inc. factory warranty. Audi of America, Inc. does not warranty tires originally

installed or sold as replacement for use on Audi vehicles. Individual tire manufacturers provide all the underlying tire warranties.

Dealer Tire

^ Tires are warranted through the specific tire manufacturer

^ Tire Coverage applicable per tire manufacturer guidelines

^ 0 to 6,000 miles 100% coverage at dealer net

^ 6,001 to 12,000 miles 50% coverage at current dealer net

What is eligible?

1. Tire tread depth must be no more than 2/32 of an inch (1.6). At 2/32 of an inch tread depth, the tire is considered worn to the limit.

2. A defect in material and workmanship is present.

3. Originally installed tires (original equipment tires) are on the vehicle for which they are designated.

4. Replacement tire(s) must be purchased through the Audi Tire Center.

5. The replacement tire(s) must have the same tire size, load rating, speed rating, and be the same tire model from the same tire manufacturer.

Ride disturbance

^ Ride disturbance cases include out-of-round, excessive vibration, and lateral/radial pull conditions

^ For most tire manufacturers, this condition is only covered if the tire has no more than 2/32-inch of wear from its maximum tread depth (1/32-inch

for Bridgestone and Toyo brand tires)

^ Ride disturbance claims are eligible only if they are not a result of:

553

^ Poor tire maintenance

^ Temporary flat spotting (goes away after vehicle is driven for approximately 20 miles)

^ Out of balance conditions caused by outside influence

For all ride disturbance claims, it is required that proper diagnosis is followed and documentation is retained (e.g., balance data, road force

measurement data)

What is not eligible?

Tire conditions, which are not eligible for the ATAP, include, but are not limited to:

1. Tires that have exceeded the time or mileage limits of the ATAP

2. Tire damage due to outside influence or road hazard (e.g., curb or pot hole damage), use of non-approved cleaning agents, or as a result of being

used in a racing/competitive event

3. Tire damage/wear due to improper or lack of tire rotation, and/or incorrect vehicle alignment

4. Tires worn due to misuse or failure of another component

5. Tires worn down to or below 2/32 of an inch (to wear bars)

6. Over-inflated or under-inflated tires

7. Flat spotted tires due to brake lock-up

8. Replacement tires not purchased through the Audi Tire Store

9. Tires not approved for specific Audi models (e.g., Audi-approved A4 tire on an Audi A5)

10. Tires that have been modified (shaved, for example)

11. Tires injected with sealants, dry or liquid balancers

12. Tires with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) identification number removed or rendered illegible

Other reimbursement questions or concerns

For any additional reimbursement questions or concerns outside of the above instructions, please contact your Audi claims specialist team.

Required Parts and Tools

Tools

^ Use VAS 6230 Vibration Control Tire Balancer or similar Road Force Measurements(R) System to check balance, Road Force values, and to

make necessary adjustments.

^ Use centering hub in conjuction with VAS 6243 model-specific clamping plate (5 finger clamping device) or similar device to ensure proper

mounting of wheel and to prevent damage to wheels.

554

Service

For Service Advisor

It is critical to address all of the points listed in order to ensure that the conditions observed during the test drive are valid concerns.

1. Ask customer appropriate questions based on attached questionnaires. Enter all information and attach copies to Repair Order.

2. Check tire pressures, which must be set according to what is recommended in the Owner's Manual. (Use Bartec TPMS tool (BRT-DBL4) to check

current tire pressures. Record on Repair Order and questionnaire.)

3. Check wheels and tires for any damage.

4. Make sure that Audi-approved wheels and tires are installed. (See Owner's Manual.)

5. Always address any concerns with the customer prior to further diagnosis.

6. Test drive vehicle with customer to verify vibration complaint.

7. Continue with Technician test drive.

Technician test drive

558

1. Check tire pressures, which must be set according to what is recommended in the Owner's Manual. (Record on Repair Order and questionnaire.)

2. Check wheels and tires for any damage.

3. Check suspension and steering components for damage.

4. Make sure that Audi-approved wheels and tires are installed. (See Owner's Manual.)

5. Always address any concerns with the customer prior to further diagnosis.

6. Warm tires by driving the vehicle for at least 20 miles (32 km) over various speed ranges (including highway driving at speeds greater than 55

mph / 88 kph). Tires must be warm in order for the test drive to be effective since cold tires may produce a vibration due to temporary flat spotting.

(See Flat spots section below.)

7. If vibration no longer exists, advise customer of flat spotting.

Flat spots

After a stationary period of only a few hours, flat spots are created as the warm tire cools down. Depending on the type, size and make of the tire, flat

spots may appear more often. See information on flat spots in the Repair Manual under Suspension, Wheels, Steering >> Wheel and Tire Guide >>

44 Wheels, Tires, Wheel Alignment >> Diagnosis and Testing >> Wheel and Tire Vibration >> Tire Flat Spots from Standing.

Tip: Flat spots are normal and no replacement of tires is necessary.

1. Flat spots falsify the radial force variation and must be driven out before balancing the wheel. Complete a test drive of at least 20 miles (32km)

over various speed ranges (including highway driving at speeds greater than 55 mph / 88 kph).

2. Immediately after the test drive, raise vehicle to prevent temporary flat spotting and check road force and balance of each tire using VAS 6230(A)

Hunter vibration control unit (GSP9700) or similar. Remove and balance the wheels immediately following the test drive. On cooled-down tires, flat

spots may reappear.

3. If vibration exists, reduce the radial force variation.

Effects of increased radial forces on the vehicle

Measure and reduce the radial force variation

1. Optimize the radial forces on a VAS 6230(A) Hunter vibration control unit (GSP9700 Road Force Measurement(R)) or similar tool.

When tightening the wheel on the balancing machine, make sure the contact surfaces of flange and wheel are clean, the wheel is correctly centered,

and a suitable cone and clamping plate are used.

Note:

It is mandatory to use the five-finger clamping plate (VAS 6243 or similar) when mounting wheels to avoid damage of wheels and for proper

balancing.

2. Set the tire pressure of every wheel to 2.5 bar (36 PSI).

3. Ensure the VAS 6230(A) or Hunter GSP9700 is set to proper road force limits as shown in the attached document GSP 9700 Operation

Manual_P104_105.

4. Ensure that the machine is properly anchored to the floor to prevent improper readings.

5. Measure, balance and if necessary match the wheel according to the instructions of the machine. Use the value for the first harmonic vibration (18

lbs. maximum).

Tip: Do not use "Quick Match" mode; this mode does not measure road force. Also turn off "Smart Weight" balance feature, which can cause

inaccurate readings.

559

6. Ensure that the wheel is centered and properly secured on the shaft of the balancer.

7. Follow all on-screen instructions to improve balance and reduce road force values (e.g. "Force Matching"). It is required to reduce road force to

the lowest possible value on all tires with a maximum value of 18 lbs.

8. Visually check the rim runout. If any runout is suspected, remove the tire and check radial and lateral runout values using VAS 6230 or Hunter

GSP9700 Tire Balancer.

Tip: Use adequate lubrication to ensure that tires are properly seated when they are installed on the wheel or are moved on a wheel to change

mounting position. Be aware that excessive lubricant can cause a tire to slip on the wheel, which will have an impact on the balance and road force

values. Please ensure that the road force values are printed out with the before and after values for each wheel and attach this documentation to the

Repair Order.

9. If the original tires are installed on the vehicle and it is not possible to reduce the road force below 18 lbs., replace the affected tire with another

tire of the same brand, size and load rating as the original.

Tip: A replacement is permitted only if the original tires are installed on the vehicle.

Tip: In case of high road force values in the replacement tire, it may be necessary to repeat steps 1 through 8.

10. Install the wheels according to instructions of the VAS 6230 according to the lowest vibration. The wheels/tire assembly with the lowest road

force values should be installed closest to the driver. Keep in mind that directional tires may not allow every tire to be installed in its ideal position

on the vehicle. See Repair Manual >> Running gear >> 44 wheels, tires, wheel alignment >> Installation of wheels/ tires/ tire pressure warning >>

Instructions on wheel change/installation.

^ Lowest road force value left front

^ Second lowest road force value right front

^ Third lowest road force value left rear

^ Highest road force value right rear

11. Test drive vehicle and verify repair.

12. If the vibrations or steering wheel vibrations persist, open an Audi Technical Assistance Center ticket. The ticket must include the following

information:

^ The completed tire questionnaires.

Tip: If the questionnaires are not attached to the ticket prior to contacting an Audi TAC consultant, you will have to call back.

560

^ Exact speed range at which the vibration or steering wheel oscillation occurs.

^ List of all repairs performed prior to contacting the TAC.

^ List of all road force values and their position on the vehicle.

^ List of all lateral and radial rim runout values from VAS 6230 or Hunter GSP9700 Tire Balancer.

^ Tire brand, model and size (including speed and load ratings).

^ Rough idle.

^ One or more of the following DTCs are stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM), J623 (address word 01):

^ DTC P0300 (Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected).

^ DTC P0301 - P0304 (Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected).

^ Engine may have reduced performance without significant loss of power or stalling.

Technical Background

Because there are a number of different misfire faults (unrelated to ignition coil operation) that could cause the MIL to illuminate, proper Guided

Fault Finding (GFF) misfire diagnosis must be followed before any ignition coils are replaced.

Production Solution

Improved ignition coil since 2008 model year.

Service

Obtain information from the customer

740

Ask the customer the following questions about the symptoms of the condition and when it occurred. This information will be necessary for

duplicating the condition during service.

^ In what situation (while turning, etc.) does the condition occur?

^ Under what environmental conditions (road conditions, weather, temperature, start conditions, etc.) does the condition occur?

^ What is the operating situation of the vehicle (activated electrical equipment, gear selected, etc.) when the condition occurs?

^ Can the complaint be reproduced?

Workshop procedure

1. Read out the data memory of all engine control units and note the environmental conditions on the DTC log.

^ If there are other entries in addition to combustion misfires, address the other entries before addressing the cylinder misfires.

^ If DTC P0301 - P0304 (Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected) is accompanied by DTC P1250 (Fuel Level Too Low), it

is likely the faults occurred due to a low fuel level and not due to a malfunction of the coils.

^ Review all applicable technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to cylinder misfires and ECM software improvements before diagnosing the

misfire condition. For example, if the data shows that the DTC was set during cold start, search ElsaWeb for TSBs related to cold start

misfires.

2. Try to duplicate the customer complaint based on the environmental conditions at the time the DTC was set. The freeze frame data gives

important indicators for the traceability of the complaint, particularly if it occurs sporadically or at cold start.

3. Review the vehicle repair history for previous misfire service or other maintenance service that could be related to the current complaint.

4. Observe the requirements of GFF. Perform GFF in full according to the proposed sequence (test plan). Do not skip any steps.

5. Complete Guided Fault Finding correctly and set the readiness code. Doing so will ensure that no subsequent faults occur due to the misfire.

6. In the case of single cylinder misfires:

^ Before replacing components, exchange the coils to determine whether the condition migrates to the other cylinders after the coils have been

exchanged. If necessary, perform a test drive to test the condition.

Note:

Always use special tool T40039 to remove ignition coils.

^ If the misfire migrates to another cylinder with an exchanged coil, replace only the affected coil.

7. Verify the repair under the same environmental conditions (engine speed, engine load value, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, intake air

temperature, ambient air pressure, voltage at terminal 30, etc.) as noted on the DTC log.

SUBJECT

SiriusXM Satellite Radio: How It Works

MODEL

All equipped with option 655 (Satellite Radio)

INFORMATION

What is satellite radio?

It is a subscriber-based radio service that is broadcast directly from satellites. Subscribers will be able to receive up to 100 radio channels featuring

compact disc digital quality music, news, weather, sports, talk radio and other entertainment channels.

Basically, it is an additional radio band. Unlike AM and FM, which are transmitted from earth-bound transmitters, satellite radio comes primarily

from a signal sent via satellites orbiting the earth.

Satellite radio signals are digital and the satellites cover the entire continental US.

This means channels have no geographic boundaries, and when driving across the country, satellite radio should not encounter static or fade.

However, brief reception loss or distortion may occur when the satellite receiver in the vehicle loses sight of the satellite: for example, in dense

urban areas surrounded by high-rise buildings; under trees; in tunnels; or in some mountain valleys.

When such reception losses occur, "Acquiring" is shown on the radio display. This is normal operation and requires no further diagnosis.

NOTE:

SiriusXM has already installed land-based repeaters to minimize these occurrences.

How does SiriusXM satellite radio work?

Sirius satellite radio is a Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS) service operating in North America, owned by SiriusXM Radio.

Programming originates and is managed in the broadcast studio of SiriusXM, and transmitted to multiple high-powered satellites positioned in orbits

above the U.S.

The signal will then be broadcast from the satellites directly to satellite radio-capable receivers across the United States.

For more detailed information, please log on to the SiriusXM website: www.SiriusXM.com

Satellite radio will not disrupt any existing radio signal. It is still possible to listen to local AM and FM stations.

FAQs:

For questions and answers, log on to the SiriusXM Support Center: listenercare.siriusxm.com/

What is necessary for a SiriusXM satellite radio to operate in MINI vehicles?

To receive SiriusXM satellite radio in a MINI, three main components are needed:

1. SiriusXM-compatible audio system

2. Satellite antenna

3. Activated SiriusXM satellite radio receiver

The SiriusXM Satellite Receiver is a module that either is already part of the head unit (CHAMP2, Radio Boost CD, etc.), or it mounts as a separate

control module in the rear of the vehicle.

The receiver module is unique to MINI and specifically designed to work with SiriusXM satellite radio technology, integrating seamlessly into the

MINI bus network system.

It deciphers the satellite signal and converts it into an audio signal that is then sent to the vehicle's audio system.

The receiver will have a test channel (CH 184) to make sure the receiver is functioning. To receive the complete SiriusXM program, it must be

2002-2006 Mini Cooper (R50) L4-1.6L (W10) Page 3

activated. This can be done by either:

^ Calling the SiriusXM call center: 1-866-635-2349

Or

^ Online:

care.siriusxm.com/login_view.action

The Satellite Antenna is mounted on the roof on most models, and on the trunk on others.

SiriusXM satellite radio is available for the following MINI vehicles:

Factory Installation

Refer to the availability chart on the SiriusXM website:

www.siriusxm.com/vehicleavailability/m

Retrofit

Only vehicles with option 693 (Satellite Tuner Preparation)

Refer to the compatibility chart (Sirius Application and Parts Information) for retrofit kits in CenterNet.

NOTE:

SiriusXM satellite radio is not available for the R50 (MINI Cooper) and R53 (MINI Cooper S). For the R52 (Cooper Convertible and Cooper S

Convertible), it is not available for vehicles before MY2007.

IMPORTANT:

For newer MINI models, it is necessary to activate the satellite radio receiver through an enabling code.

For additional information on enabling codes (ordering, downloading and installation), refer to Service Information M09 02 11 and M09 01 11.

Betroffene Fahrzeuge

Zustand

Kondensation ist sichtbar auf der Innenseite der Scheinwerfer, Rücklicht, Nebel-Licht, Seitenmarkierungsleuchten Licht, front, Blinker, Tagfahrlicht oder Dritten Bremse

Licht-Objektiv.

Body - Water Drips Marks On Door After Washing

66 Water drip marks on front door

66 11 17

2025618/1

August 12, 2011.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

160

After the car has been washed water drips out of the exterior rearview mirror housing leaving watermarks.

Technical Background

When the door mirror housing is in its normal position, up to 120 ml of water can gather in the lower area of the housing. The water drains very

slowly causing the watermarks on the door.

When the exterior rearview mirror housing is folded in (parking position), the water drains quickly and does not create the drip marks on the door.

This can explain why the condition only occurs at certain times, as described by the customer.

Production Solution

A new mirror cover (lower section only) with a design change to the lower section with an additional hole was put in to series production. This new

mirror cover is fitted allowing the water to drain quicker from a position further away from the door.

Service

Have the replacement parts painted before installation.

1. Replace the lower section of the exterior rearview mirror housing for both sides of the vehicle as indicated by the ElsaWeb repair manual Body >>

Body Exterior >> 66 Exterior Equipment >> Removal and Installation >> Exterior Rearview Mirror >> Mirror Adjusting Unit Mount Cover Take

extra care to ensure proper fitment.

2. Road test the vehicle to ensure no wind noises were created due to improper fitment of the mirror housings.

3. Suggest to the customer to enable the automatic folding feature in the MMI to prevent this from occurring in the future.

Wiring Harness Repairs

MODEL

All - including new (unsold) vehicles

INFORMATION

Wiring repairs can be performed on all vehicles including those not yet retailed. In most cases a harness repair is preferable to harness replacement

because a harness replacement can introduce new problems simply because of the complexity of the installation.

Refer to Repair Instructions in groups RA 61 00 and RA 61 13 for specific details on how to perform repairs. These Repair Instructions include

information on all aspects of wire repair, including:

^ Tools and equipment

^ Available types of repair connector

^ Repair kits

^ Connector removal techniques

^ Wire repair techniques

^ Twisted pair repair techniques

^ Optical fiber repair techniques

^ Etc.

Remember, many of the most difficult problems to troubleshoot are caused by wiring issues. It is therefore very important not to take short cuts when

performing wiring harness repairs. Always use the recommended tools and follow the repair instructions.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

CONDITION

220
