^ Various electrical components malfunctioning.



^ Water ingress into trunk, door, dome light or dash panel areas during the application of window tint.



Technical Background



Vehicles are designed to prevent water from entering the interior cabin from the outside. To ensure a secure installation of interior components (trim



and accessory pieces), holes for fasteners are strategically placed in interior surfaces. During application of window tint film, water may enter



interior areas through these openings, damaging electrical components located near window glass. Electrical components in these areas must be



removed or protected during application of window tint film.



Production Solution

Service



1. If you encounter a vehicle with a defective control module located in the area around or below windows which are tinted, check if the failure



occurred shortly after the window tint was installed.



2. Inspect the control module and wiring connections for signs of water damage.



3. Also, inform any vendors with which your Dealership may conduct business about the content of this bulletin.

This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:



Side assist becomes inoperative.



This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect until removed.



Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:



^ Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the 96C3 code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.



^ Vehicle must be within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.



^ Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.



^ Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in dealer inventory prior to sale.



Technical Background



For Audi A8 vehicles equipped with side assist (address 3C) and manufactured within a specific period, it is possible that the side assist may switch



itself off. DTC 02850 may be stored inside the side assist control unit and the system can no longer be activated.

1. On electric cables, the biting damage is difficult to recognize because of the thin sheathing. Disconnect the electric cables to check for damage on



rubber hoses.



2. Stretch the hose and inspect the damaged area of the cable with a suitable light.



Prickmarks are typical of biting damage (Figures 1 and 2). If pricks are found, animal damage can be assumed.



The cracked/fractured surface in Figure 3 can be diagnosed with damage code "torn" or "broken," although an animal bite was the cause.



Check the adjacent area for pricks by slightly stretching the hose.

Further indications of an animal bite are tattered insulation mats, animal hairs/feathers or paw marks.



3. Replace the damaged components according to the Repair Manual.



4. To avoid future animal bites, advise the customer to clean the engine compartment. Electrical deterrents and cable protection have proven



effective, but 100% protection cannot be guaranteed.



Warranty



This damage is due to outside influence and is not covered by any Audi warranty.

Recommended animal protection measures:



^ Electric deterrents. Similar to electric fences, these deterrents ensure effective and sustainable protection. Animals are driven away by harmless



electric shocks. Such systems are commercially available.



^ Cable protection. Slotted corrugated pipes of hard plastic are pulled over the cables. No cables must be omitted. Corrugated pipes for cables and



thin hoses are shown in the special parts catalogue under HG 09, UG 71, illustration 979-00. Cables and hoses must not become kinked.

Technical Background



This TSB provides guidelines for testing microphones in a vehicle.



Production Solution

Service



1. Investigate GFF to determine if a fault is stored for microphone operation in address words 56, 5F, 67, or 77 depending on vehicle and equipment



levels.



2. If a fault is stored in GFF, proceed with the test plan outlined in the scan tool. If there is no DTC stored, proceed to step 3.



3. Verify the complaint by using one of the following methods:



a. Pair a known good compatible Bluetooth phone to the system, and place a call to a landline contact. Place the call in the same conditions as the



customer concern (driving, stationary, A/C on, etc.).



If the call quality for the other person is clear and without distortion, then the microphones are OK and should not be replaced. If noise or



distortion is heard, then proceed to step 4.



b. Create a directory contact and then a voice tag for that entry. Create the voice tag in the same conditions as the customer concern (driving,



stationary, A/C on, etc.). Playback the entry and verify it is clear and without distortion.



If the entry sounds clear, then the microphones are OK and should not be replaced. If noise or distortion is heard, then proceed to step 4.



4. Check the microphones for mechanical defects:

a. Remove the roof module and verify the microphones are securely seated in the roof module by pressing on them. For 2012+ C7 & D4 vehicles,



remove the microphones and inspect the rubber seal around the edge of the microphone. Verify it is not torn or broken. If it is damaged, replace



the microphone. For vehicles equipped with integrated seat belt microphones, please reference TSB 2026851, 91 Belt Microphone Overview.



Note:



When installing microphones back into the roof module, make sure the microphones are installed straight into the cavity. Installing them at any other



angle can cause damage to the microphone and/or seal.



b. Inspect the microphone wiring and verify it is securely fastened in place and that there is no visible sign of damage.



5. Check the microphones for electrical defects:



a. Disconnect the microphones and verify the voltage coming from the module is 8V +/- 10%.



b. Disconnect the microphone cable at the control module and verify that the voltage on the wiring to the microphones is 0V.



c. If voltage is present in step a. and step b., then inspect the wiring for any shorts.



d. If voltage is not present in either case, or the incorrect voltage was measured in step a., then inspect the control module for proper output



voltage at the module and replace if necessary.



e. If both step a. and step b. were OK, then replace the microphones.

Technical Background



Low fuel quality in combination with a short distance driving cycle allows hydrocarbons to form carbon deposits.



Deposits interrupt tumble for efficient fuel / air mixture, causing cold start misfire.



Production Solution



Not applicable.



Service



1. Add fuel additive G 001 700 03 or G 001 770 A2 directly into the fuel tank, following the mix ratio. For example, 120 ml per 30 liters gasoline,



300 ml per 20 gallons of gasoline.



2. Drive the car 60 miles. Note in and out mileage on RO.



3. Check for cold start misfire at the next cold start.



Tip: This method was proven to be very effective when carbon deposits on the injectors are the root cause.



If misfire discontinues, carbon on the injectors was causing misfire. The repair is successful and complete.



4. After repair, give one bottle of fuel additive G17 to the customer. Instruct the customer to add the fuel additive to a full fuel tank after 3,000 miles.



5. Please advice the customer to use Top Tier fuel. (See TSB 2014753.)

^ G11, G12, and G12+ coolants have been replaced by an improved version.



^ G12++ coolant (for service available) has been introduced in MY 2005 for all engines.



^ G13 has been introduced in MY 2008 as factory filling and service.

Identifying and Mixing Factory Fill Engine Coolants



1. Based on its color, identify which coolant the vehicle was filled with from the factory (Figure 1).



Tip:



Figure 1 is shown for color identification only; coolant packaging may vary.

2. Using the chart at right, determine if the vehicle has the correct coolant (Figure 2). If a vehicle is found to have the incorrect coolant, drain and



fill the coolant system using the repair manual procedures in ElsaWeb.



Note:



Coolants can be mixed, as described in the chart, but it is always best practice to change the coolant due to reduced corrosion protection



when coolants are mixed (exception: G12++ and G13 are fully compatible).



Note:



W12 6.3 engines require special G13 coolant only: G A13A8JM1. No other coolant is allowed, and no other coolant can be mixed with this



coolant.



Note:



When the coolant is changed due to a cooling system issue, the cooling system should be drained using the repair manual procedures in



ElsaWeb and refilled with water and the engine run for 15 minutes with the heater on to remove any residual coolant. Then drain and fill the



system to the freeze protection ratio listed in ElsaWeb.



Tip:



Cooling system drain and fill due to coolant mixing, or incorrect coolant, is not covered by warranty.

Parking aid warning sound without obstacle



Condition



The parking assist system warns of obstacles when there are no obstacles around the vehicle.



Technical Background



Several reasons can lead to an unjustified warning sound of the parking assist system.



- One or more sensors are incorrectly mounted (see attachments) and the bumper is detected as an obstacle.



- Dirt, salt, ice, snow etc. might cover one or more parking assist sensors.



- Without single frame radiator: If the license plate holder is attached with only 2 bolts, the holder might protrude due to the uneven surface of



the bumper.



- With single frame radiator: If the license plate holder is not correctly installed, it might be detected as an obstacle.



Production Solution

Service



1. Check for parking assist system-related diagnostic trouble codes. If present, follow Guided Fault Finding to solve the concern.



2. Verify that all parking assist sensors are mounted properly. Remount parking assist sensors if necessary.



3. Verify sensor brackets are not broken. (Bumper removal is not necessary for the check.) Replace brackets, if broken.



4. Verify that the sensors are not covered by dirt, ice, salt, etc. Clean if necessary and inform customer.



5. If a license plate holder is mounted improperly:



- Without single frame radiator: The license plate holder must be attached with 4 bolts.



- With single frame radiator: Install the license plate holder correctly.



Warranty



Accounting for incorrectly fitted license plate holder and for cleaning of the sensors under warranty is not permitted.

Condition



Replaced brake light sensors are sometimes damaged during adjustment or removal, preventing proper analysis for quality purposes.



Technical Background



It is not necessary to remove the brake light sensor to perform an adjustment. Special tool T40168A is required to properly remove the brake light



sensor.

Service



Adjustment procedure for the brake light sensor:



1. Switch ignition off.



2. Remove the driver's side instrument panel lower close out panel to gain access to the brake light sensor.



3. Push the brake light sensor plunger all the way in and hold. (Figure 1, arrow A).

4. Turn the magenta colored positioner counter-clockwise, approximately 60锟斤拷 to the stop. (Figure 2, arrow A). The brake light sensor is ready for



adjustment.



5. Ensure the brake pedal is in its rest position and must not be moved.



6. Fully release the plunger. (Figure 3, arrow A).



7. Turn the magenta colored positioner clockwise, approximately 600 to the stop. (Figure 4, arrow B). The brake light sensor is now correctly



adjusted.



Removal of the brake light sensor:



1. Switch ignition off.



2. Remove the driver's side instrument panel lower close out panel to gain access to the brake light switch.

3. Push the brake light sensor plunger all the way in and hold. (Figure 5, arrow A).



4. Turn the magenta colored positioner counter-clockwise, approximately 60锟斤拷 to the stop. (Figure 6, arrow A). The brake light sensor is ready for



removal.



5. Release the plunger. (Figure 7, arrow A).



6. Install special tool T40168A between the brake light sensor plunger and the brake pedal.

Tip: The cone on the tool must face in the direction of the driver seat. The opening on the tool must align with the projection on the brake light



sensor.



7. Press tool T40168A against the brake light sensor. The three tabs on the brake light sensor unlock at the same time.



8. Remove the brake light sensor and remove the tool from the sensor.

The customer may encounter operation issues with the Apple iPhone(TM) in conjunction with the AUDI Music Interface (AMI).



Technical Background



iPhone software

The iPhone cannot only be used as a mobile telephone but also as an MP3 player, like an Apple iPod(R). This works in conjunction with the AMI as



long as the iPhone's software is version 1.1.2 or 1.1.4 (version 2.0.x is under development at the time of producing this bulletin) and the AMI has at



least software version 700.



In case of a claim that the iPhone does not work properly, software not authorized by Apple may have been installed in the iPhone.



iPhone operation



^ If an iPhone is connected to AMI, the Bluetooth telephone function can be used at the same time as the external music function as long as the



vehicle is correspondingly equipped.



^ If the iPhone is operated through a telephone adapter and not connected to the AMI, then the iPhone will not function as an external music source.

In case of a complaint, please verify that the installed software is indeed the original software.



Tip: The software version may be shown as 1.1.2./1.1.4. even with unauthorized software in the iPhone. Due to this reason, verify in the upper left

Technical Background



Wrong coding of telephone transceiver R36 on an e.g. prior replacement may be the root cause.



TIP: Only MOST Telephone transceivers are potentially affected. A4 and A5 have a MOST system when they are equipped with a navigation



system.

Verify if the coding of the Telephone transceiver R36 (Address word 77) is 10900.



- If this is not the case, change the coding accordingly and verify the phone function with the customer's phone.



- If this is the case, verify if the customers phone is compatible with the vehicle. In addition, try a different compatible phone in the customer s



vehicle and the customer s phone in a newer model year vehicle.



Depending on the findings, the customer may need a compatible phone, a customer-pay MMI software update, or R36 may actually have to be



replaced.

The customer may report that the illumination of the dash insert, the air conditioning control panel or the inside light flickers when briefly pressing



the accelerator in P or N or when shifting down while driving downhill.



TECHNICAL BACKGROUND



Only vehicles with PR number 8GH may be affected.



When high electricity consumers are switched off and the battery is fully charged, the energy generated by the alternator is sometimes too great for



the power system to absorb. This may lead to briefly increased voltage, and the lights mentioned above may briefly flicker.



This characteristic is caused by the alternator design and is a normal condition of the vehicle.



PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Repairs and parts replacements do not change the above characteristic. Explain to the customer that this phenomenon is not a malfunction.

Technical Background



The folds of the outer rubber boots on the front axle shafts may contact each other when turning the steering wheel. This may cause squeaking



noises, especially when the vehicle is new. The volume and occurrence of the noise dissipates after a short break-in period.

^ The compressor for the self-leveling system continues to run after the engine has been switched off and the vehicle has been locked.

^ DTC 0453 (restricted function through excess temperature).



^ DTC 1583 (leak in the system recognized).

Because of poor performance or failure of the air suspension compressor, the vehicle ride height cannot be adjusted. As a safeguard, the control



module will lower the vehicle to the lowest position and illuminate the warning light. Drivability is not affected.

1. Check the function of the air compressor by supplying it with direct current. Determine if the air compressor is operating correctly and sounds



normal, if it is unusually noisy, or if it is not working at all.



2. Check relay J403 by opening the relay and comparing it to the images shown:



If the relay exhibits any of the conditions A - C below, replace both the air compressor and the relay, even if the air compressor sounds normal.



A) Strong erosion of both contacts (Figure 1, Figure 2).



B) Strong erosion of the spring contact (Figure 3).

C) Overheated strand (Figure 4).



If the relay contacts are similar to condition D below, and the air compressor sounds normal, replace only the relay.



D) Contacts with minor marks (Figure 5).

^ Parking aid sporadically warns of obstacles when none exist.



^ Parking aid is inoperative or provides constant warning.

Service



Misaligned parking aid sensors or various vehicle mountings can cause parking aid malfunctions. This TSB provides diagnosis tips related to



parking aid systems.



1. Verify that the coding within J446 - Parking Aid Control Module is valid for the equipment installed on the vehicle (i.e.: trailer hitch, tow bar,



etc.).



2. Check the vehicle fault memory and proceed according to GFF.



^ If GFF identifies a problem with a specific sensor, proceed with the test plan.



^ If GFF does not identify a specific sensor, check MVBs in J446 - Parking Aid Control Module starting with MVBs for oscillation.



MVBs for internal sensor oscillation (if applicable) (acceptable values = 0.8 to 1.5ms). If the oscillation is not within specification, proceed



to step 10.



MVBs for distance calculations (255 = no obstruction). If an obstruction is identified but none exists, proceed to step 3.



Tip:



Vehicles can be equipped with 4- or 8-channel parking aid systems. Refer to ElsaWeb for vehicle-specific information.

3. Check parking sensors for obvious issues:



^ Mechanical damage (stone chips, scratches).



^ Dirt, ice, foreign bodies, foil adhered to sensor.



^ Damage to the bumpers that may indicate an accident (or paint indicating a previous incident).



Tip:



Exterior damage to the vehicle, including stone chips and scratches, is not covered by Audi Warranty. When painting sensors, the special painting



instructions" for parking sensors in the paint repair manual must be observed.



4. Check for non-Audi Genuine Accessories which can interfere with parking aid operation, including:



^ Aftermarket towing bar.



^ Aftermarket lowering kit.



^ Aftermarket spoiler or air deflector.



^ Aftermarket bumper.



5. For 8-channel systems, check the installation of the front license plate holder for:



^ Protrusion. The license plate and holder must fit on flat.



^ Bent corners. Any bent-open corners may cause false readings.



^ Correct fit. Oversized license plate holders or frames can obstruct parking aid sensors.



6. Pressure check for a tight fit and correct attachment of the parking sensors. If the sensor is not snug or feels loose, remove the bumper and



reinstall the sensor.

7. Check that the decoupling ring is correctly seated. If the ring is folded or bulging, remove the bumper and reinstall the sensor.

8. Verify that the sensor is centered inside of the mounting hole. If the sensor is mounted off-center, remove the bumper and reinstall the sensor.



9. Ensure the sensor sits flush with the bumper. If the sensor is recessed or bulging, remove the bumper and reinstall the sensor.



10. Re-evaluate the concern:



^ If an issue was identified and the concern was remedied, proceed to step 15.



^ If no issues were identified and the concern cannot be duplicated, proceed to step 15.



^ If the concern still persists, proceed to step 11.



11. Remove the bumper and check the connectors on the sensors, the socket box of the bumper, on the control unit for parking assistance and on the



sound generator of the parking assistance for:

^ Corrosion.



^ Water ingress or water marks.



^ Bent-open pins.



^ Pushed-back pins.



^ Correct fit of plug seal.



Tip:



If a specific sensor is identified by the diagnostic tester, proceed forward for that specific sensor only.



12. Check the cables in the bumper for damage and sufficient length. Cables that are too short can cause damage to the harness.



^ If the cable is damaged, repair the cable using VAS Repair Kit 1978.



^ If the cable is too tight, correct the routing by moving the support clip so the cable is no longer under tension.



13. Check the connectors on the parking sensors and the socket box for correct installation. If the connectors are not installed properly, reinstall.



14. Re-evaluate the concern:



^ If an issue was identified and the concern was remedied, proceed to step 15.



^ If the concern still persists, swap affected parking aid sensors or control modules until issue is identified, remedy the concern, and proceed

to step 15.



15. Various environmental factors can cause incorrect warnings. Notify the customer that the following may affect parking aid operation:



^ High plants and curbs.



^ Gravel paths, cobblestone paths, pot holes, grates, sharp bends in the road, slopes, driveways or ramps.



^ Water on the parking sensors.



^ Ice, snow on the parking sensor or the bumper.



^ Exhaust gases of the vehicle under certain weather conditions.



^ Conflicting ultrasound sources (pneumatic brakes on trucks, animal alarms, parking aid systems of other vehicles, etc.).



^ Fluorescent lighting.



Warranty



Accounting for an incorrectly fitted license plate holder or for cleaning the sensors is not permitted under warranty. For the potential remounting of



parking assist sensor, replacing of the parking assist sensor bracket, or repairing system wiring.



All warranty claims submitted for payment must be in accordance with the Audi Warranty Policies and Procedures Manual. Claims are subject to



review or audit by Audi Warranty.

Service



1. If the vehicle is equipped with Battery Energy Manager (J644) or Battery Diagnostic Manager (J367), please perform TSB 2025360, 27 Low



Battery Charge: Diagnosis Tips and TAC Instructions before continuing with this bulletin.



2. Verify the battery is good, using one of the below TSBs, depending on vehicle equipment:



^ TSB 2023282, 27 Battery testing and charging - vehicles with BDM (J367)



^ TSB 2023330, 27 Battery testing and charging - vehicles with BEM (J644)



^ TSB 2023266, 27 Battery testing and charging - vehicles without BDM or BEM



3. If the battery is defective, replace as per the instructions in the applicable TSB.



4. Determine if a draw currently exists on the vehicle by using an ammeter with an inductive pickup, such as the 5051B, or similar tool, such as a



Fluke Meter, to check battery draw using the steps below:



a. Start vehicle and operate all consumers on vehicle (radio, lights, heated seats, door locks, sunroof, power liftgate, etc.)



b. Shut off vehicle, open left and right front doors, hood, and rear lid. Manually latch all opened items to gain access to fuse boxes.



c. Zero the ammeter and attached the amp clamp to the negative battery cable. Lock the car using the remote and observe the ammeter, which



should spike briefly as the doors are closed. This will confirm the ammeter is operating correctly. The vehicle may also provide a confirmation



beep to confirm all doors are latched, provided the option is enabled in the MMI (if applicable).



d. After 2 hours, the ammeter should read under 0.040A (40mA).



If the reading is above 40mA, attempt to locate the source of the excessive draw by proceeding to step 4.



If vehicle does not exceed maximum sleep state current draw, perform a long term (overnight) measurement test. Record the long term



measurement using MIN/MAX setting of scan tool. If the long term measurement still does not exceed the maximum sleep state current draw,



proceed to step 10.



Tip: Periodic spikes in current draw are normal.



5. To determine the potential source if the current draw, measure the voltage drop across the vehicle fuses using the VAS Scantool multimeter, Fluke



multimeter, or equivalent.



6. Using the "mV" scale on the multimeter, measure the voltage drop across fuses by placing the positive lead on one side of the fuse, and the



negative lead on the other (Figure 1). Take absolute value of reading of voltage drop (ignore negative signs) and then reference voltage drop chart to



determine how much current the circuit is currently consuming. See Identifying Cuffent Consumption with Matrix attachment.



Tip: Due to the operation of CAN Bus communications, it is no longer possible to simply pull fuses to determine the location of a draw, as this



action can result in a bus wakeup and invalidate the test.

7. Continue this process until the fuse with an inappropriate amount of draw (over 40mA) is discovered.



8. Once fused circuit is identified, use service repair and wiring diagram information in ElsaWeb to identify all components on that circuit.



Disconnect the components from the circuit one by one and allow the sleep current to stabilize after each disconnection.



9. Measure the vehicle current consumption and voltage drop across the fuse again. If the values are now within the normal range, the component



causing excess draw has been identified. If the values are still too high, repeat steps 5-7 again until the component is identified.



10. If it is necessary to contact TAC for additional guidance, please prepare the following information before opening a contact. If TAC assistance is



not necessary, proceed to the next step.



^ How many times is car in for a battery concern?



^ When did the vehicle come in?



^ Was it towed in or jumped?



^ What day did the customer have the concern?



^ Is/was the date/time in cluster correct? If not, what was/is the date/time displayed?



^ When did you start working on the car?



^ What is the battery serial number in the vehicle?



^ Are there any other electrical concerns on the R.O.?



^ Attach a full GFF Log with complete battery history data and Keep Awake readout (For vehicles equipped with J367).



^ Attach pictures of the amplifier for Audi Q7, A4 Avant, or A6 Avant vehicles if the amplifier shows no obvious signs of water damage.



11. Before returning the vehicle to the customer, test the battery state of charge and verify that it is above 85%. If the SOC is below this value,



charge the battery until at least 85% is achieved.

Leaking shock absorbers

A leaking shock absorber is characterized by a wet film of oil running down the pipe. This needs to be replaced.



Shock absorbers with oil marks



A light film of dried oil or oil marks on the pipe beneath the dust guard are not clear indication of a leaking shock. These are caused by residues



from filling up the shock during production or slight "condensation" in the seal area. This small amount of oil is for lubrication and reduces the wear



of the seal.



Tip: This does not affect the shock absorber. No repair is necessary.

The customer may state that the outside ambient temperature display is incorrect.



Technical Background

To achieve a smoothening effect of the displayed outside ambient temperature, the value shown does not instantaneously follow the temperature



sensor measurement. The display will not change faster than 4锟斤拷F (2锟斤拷C) per minute. This concept applies to both falling and rising temperatures.



A programming strategy is also implemented to avoid incorrect readings on a parked vehicle, due to the temperature sensor being affected by outside



influences such as radiant heat from the engine bay, elevated road surface temperatures, etc. Incorrect readings are avoided through the following



logic:



^ After switching the ignition on, temperature changes are only shown after 30 seconds for a stationary vehicle (vehicle speed = zero and engine



switched off).



^ Only when the vehicle drives faster than 12 mph (20 km/h), rising temperature values are displayed during the first 3 miles (5 km).



^ If the measured ambient temperature is above the displayed value, but falling, the display is not changed.



^ When the coolant temperature reaches 104锟斤拷F (40锟斤拷C) and the speed drops to under 12 mph (20 km/h), only falling ambient temperature values



are shown. For example, in stop and go traffic when the vehicle is often below 12 mph (20 km/h), it can take some time before the displayed



temperature is correct.



^ If conditions above are noted during these typical driving scenarios, the sensor is not at fault and does not need to be replaced.

The customer may report that the daytime running light LEDs in the headlights have slightly different shades of color. There is no related memory

Technical Background



The minor color differences of the LEDs are caused by the coating of the blue LED with yellow phosphor. This coating is necessary to get white



LEDs.

A permissible range of white for the road traffic is defined by law (Figure 1, Area 1 within blue dotted line).



The LED manufacturer sorts the complete production volume according to even smaller color ranges (Figure 1, Area 2 in black grid).



To get the fewest possible color deviations, Audi uses only part of the manufacturer's already limited range and thus only a small section of what is



legally permissible for road traffic (Figure 1, Area 3).



In production, a finer color selection is not possible; this can lead to minimal color differences. This is normal.
