2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Review

The A3 Sportback e-tron is Audi’s premium plug-in hybrid offering, with a luxurious interior, high specification levels and potentially excellent economy it is a strong offering in the sparsely populated plug-in hybrid segment. It has received a mild update for 2017 which include additional safety and technology features as well as a refreshed exterior.

What’s it like inside?

Unlike much of the competition, the Sportback e-tron refrains from advertising its eco-friendly credentials on the outside and this is true of the interior too. Other than some extra buttons and gauges for the hybrid drivetrain, the dashboard, seating and upholstery is identical to the rest of the A3 range. Quality fit and finish is class-leading and the available virtual cockpit instrument cluster further adds to the premium feel inside.

The A3 is not a big car and while occupants in the front are well-catered for in the head and legroom department, rear passengers may find it a bit more intimate. Head room is inadequate for taller adults and the lack of space extends into the cargo area which is also on the small side. Foldable rear seatbacks do offer greatly increased capacity and the battery pack is situated beneath the rear seats so it does not make for a shallower load area.

How does it drive?

The e-tron proves to be very capable down a twisty road, it masks its additional weight over a standard A3 well and the suspension’s ability to soak up pockmarked roads is commendable. Responses to the controls are immediate and the A3 e-tron flows down a road in a confidence-inspiring manner. Compared to rivals such as the Chevrolet Volt and Ford C-Max it is definitely the sporty choice in this segment.The cabin is well-insulated and eerily silent when driven in pure electric mode, the gas-engine not adding much more noise when chiming in.

2017-2018 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Front Side in Motion What about the performance?

The Audi A3 e-tron is equipped with a 150 horsepower 1.4-litre turbocharged inline-4 that is allied to a 102 hp electric motor. Combined outputs are 204 hp and 258 lb ft of torque and drive sent to the front wheels through a 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.When working in tandem the gas and electric engines provide the A3 with class-leading performance. A 0-60 mph time of 7.6-seconds and strong in-gear acceleration thanks to the instant electric torque makes for fast and effortless progress.

The 8.8-kWh battery pack allows for electric only driving for up to an estimated 16-miles and can either be recharged externally or by the gas engine. Overall consumption is rated at a very ambitious 83 mpg; this number is highly variable as hybrids tend to be far more efficient in city driving and less so on highways.Gas-hybrid mode yields a more realistic 34 mpg although with judicious use of the throttle and the selectable driving modes this figure can be greatly improved upon.

What are my options?

The A3 e-tron carries a premium price tag and offers premium specification levels too. Perhaps unsurprisingly the first two trim levels are named Premium and Premium Plus. The base Premium trim has a comprehensive list of standard features such as full leather upholstery, power front seats, panoramic sunroof, keyless ignition, automatic climate control, 5.3-inch display with Bluetooth and rearview camera. Safety is taken care of by a Audi pre sense basic and front which include a forward collision mitigation system and automated emergency braking.

Premium Plus trim adds LED head and taillights, heated front seats, parking system plus with rear camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror and updated trim details.The top Prestige trim adds the Audi virtual cockpit, B&O 14-speaker sound system, adaptive cruise control and smartphone interface and navigation system.Individual options can be added depending on trim level and a Sport Package offers 18-inch wheels and sports seats to all trim levels.

This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:



2.0 T Engine camshaft adjuster replacement.



This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect until removed.



Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:



^ Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the 15D6 code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.



^ Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.



^ Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin. Procedure must be performed on applicable



vehicles in dealer inventory prior to sale.



Technical Background



On Audi vehicles with 2.0L TFSI engines built within a specific period, it is possible that the non-return valve on the camshaft adjuster (bearing



saddle) may break. As a result, fragments of the non-return valve can enter the lubrication system.

^ Please notify customers who have taken delivery of one of the affected vehicles when the vehicles are next in the workshop.



^ Please ensure that all affected vehicles are checked and repaired during the next service visit. Make a note of the required campaign on the

1. Pull off engine cover panel (Figure 1, arrows).



2. Detach connector from camshaft control valve (Figure 2, 1)



3. Remove bolts (4 total) (Figure 2, arrows) and detach camshaft control valve.



Tip: Catch escaping oil with a cloth.



4. Remove wire harness from timing chain cover (Figure 3).

5. Unscrew bolts in order (Figure 4, 1-5) and remove timing chain cover.



Note:



The control valve has a left-hand thread.



6. Unscrew control valve in direction indicated by arrow (clockwise) using assembly tool T10352/1 or T10352.



Tip: Catch escaping oil with a cloth.

7. Remove bolts. (7 total)



8. Place cloth under bracket (bearing saddle) to catch escaping oil and any parts of non-return valve that may drop out.



NOTE:



If the camshaft is damaged, follow the procedure detailed in TSB 2023107.



9. Replace bracket (bearing saddle).



Tip: Lubricate bearing surface with oil before installing.



Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

Reconnect wire harness.

Over 500,000 Audis Are Being Recalled Over Airbag Safety Issues

As if the VW Group didn't already have enough to worry about right now.

Volkswagen may be celebrating the news that it overtook Toyota to become the best-selling manufacturer of 2016, but we don't think spirits are too high. The company is still recovering from the aftermath of Dieselgate after all. A major recall for over 500,000 Audi vehicles in the United States certainly won’t help make the Germans feel any better either. The recall concerns issues with the airbag and coolant pumps overheating in several Audi models. The first part of the recall affects 234,054 Audi Q5s produced between 2011 and 2017.

According to the NHTSA, it was discovered that the sunroof drainage system may allow water to soak into the foam surrounding the side-curtain airbag inflator canister. Should this happen, the canister could corrode and potentially rupture, showering occupants with metal fragments. The situation may sound similar to the fatal issues with Takata’s airbags that affected millions of cars, but this is an entirely separate issue. Plus, the Q5’s airbag inflators are developed by iSi Automotive, not Takata. The recall will start this month and will involve the water drainage system for the sunroof and side curtain airbag canisters being inspected. If required, the inflator will be replaced or repaired by sealing it with wax.

A separate airbag-related recall has been issued to 5,901 Audi and Volkswagen 2017 and 2018 models as the airbag may not deploy properly and the seat belt pre-tensioners may not activate correctly. If that wasn’t already enough, another 342,867 models are being recalled due to issues with the coolant pump of FSI engines becoming blocked and overheating. Affected vehicles include the Audi Q5, A5 and A5 Cabriolet models from 2013-2017, Audi Allroads and A4s from 2013-2016 and A6s from 2012-2015. In this case, a simple software update will resolve the issue by cutting power supply to the coolant pump if overheating is detected.

Technical Background



Certain restrictions are present when connecting a Bluetooth device to the vehicle. These restrictions vary depending on the vehicle system present.

Service



1. Verify that the customer's cell phone is on the Bluetooth compatibility list. You will find the latest release on www.audiusa.com/bluetooth.



2. Proceed to the appropriate section based on vehicle equipment.



Tip: On certain phones, if the connection has already been established, there are additional confirmations that need to be accepted to



automatically re-pair. This includes Blackberry and some Android devices.



MMI3G, MMI3G+, RMC:



1. Verify Bluetooth is turned on within the Bluetooth menu on the phone and in the vehicle.



2. Bluetooth visibility selections within the Bluetooth menu will affect pairing functionality if the pairing is initiated from the phone:



Off: The vehicle cannot be seen by any Bluetooth device.



Auto: The vehicle is visible to Bluetooth devices up to a speed of 5km/h and up to 5 minutes after switching on the ignition.



On: The vehicle is always visible regardless of speed or time from ignition.



If pairing is initiated from the vehicle, the above settings do not apply.



3. During pairing a PIN will be generated or requested from the user. To pair the phone to the vehicle simply confirm the PIN on either device



depending on the pairing method.



Tip: If the vehicle and the mobile phone support the connection method "Secure Simple Pairing" (MMI3G+ from 22/2011, RMC from



45/2010), then a Bluetooth connection can be made while driving. This method provides a 6 digit PIN which appears on both the vehicle and



mobile phone. Simply confirm the two PINs are the same to connect.



4. If all values are set correctly, and the phone still will not connect, please follow standard diagnosis procedures.



UHV CAN, MMI 2G:



1. Verify Bluetooth is turned on within the Bluetooth menu on the phone.



2. The pairing process must be completed from the phone, as there is no option to search for phones from the MMI.



3. With MMI 2G the vehicle is only visible up to 5km/h and up to max. 5 minutes after switching on the ignition.



4. With UHV CAN the vehicle is always visible for vehicles built after CW 22/2008. For vehicles built beforehand it is visible up to 5km/h and



up to max. 5 minutes after switching on the ignition.



5. The default PIN is 1234. In MMI 2G the PIN can be changed in the Bluetooth Settings menu. In RNS-E vehicles, under Telephone Settings.

The PIN cannot be changed in other radios.



6. If the initial connection still fails, for UHV CAN and MMI 2G vehicles verify in 77 - Telephone Transceiver that Adaptation channel 133 is



on 1 (Bluetooth enabled) and channel 134 is on 0 (cradle is not installed). In addition, for MMI 2G equipped vehicles: Verify also in 07 -



Display/control unit that adaption channel 12 is on 2.



7. If all values are set correctly, and the phone still will not connect, please follow standard diagnosis procedures.

All current and future Audi models require an SVM code to code and/or parameterized the new replacement airbag control unit for service. The



SVM code is listed in ETKA in the "REMARKS" area for the affected part number (See Figure 1 and 2). The SVM code could also be listed within



a parts bulletin on the ETKAinfo.com website which would be indicated in the "REMARKS" area within EKTA. This information can only be seen



in EKTA when performing an FI Search (VIN specific search).

Service



When replacing the airbag control unit (J234) in a TT, A3, R8 GT, R8 GT Spyder, A5 Cabriolet, or C6 A6 an SVM coding must be performed using



the provided SVM code.



When replacing the airbag control unit (J234) in a B8 A4/S4, A5/S5, Audi Q5, A7, or D4 A8, an SVM parameterization and coding must be



performed using the provided SVM code.



Tip:



Do not run an SVM Specified vs. Actual Comparison! If you have already run an SVM Spec/Actual and the SVM Code listed below fails, then you



will need to contact the Technical Assistance Center to get the vehicle's CARPORT Reference set correctly. Additionally, its important to note that



no software update is performed during this SVM communication.



1. Find the original and replacement software part numbers and software versions from the GFF log or through VSD.

2. Use these numbers as the lookup values in the table above. All part numbers and software versions must match the values in one single row. If



no match is found, please contact the Technical Assistance Center.



3. Once a match is found, use the SVM Action Code listed in the same row of the table.



4. Enter the SVM code.



For TT, A3, R8 GT, R8 GT Spyder, A5 Cabriolet, & C6 A6 Only:



^ Enter code using Audi Flashing >> SVM Code for problem related update. This can be accessed through the VAS Testers main menu.



For A4/S4, A5/S5, Audi Q5, C7 A6, A7, & D4 A8 Only:



^ Enter code using Guided Fault Finding >> Go To >> Function Component Selection >> Software Version Management >> SVM - Direct



Input SVM code for vehicle conversion. When SVM suggests a new coding of the airbag control unit, enter a "NO" response to skip this



step. SVM will then provide a suggestion to parameterize the control unit. Enter a "YES" response to allow the SVM parameterization.



Tip:



If a new parameterization is available for the control unit, it must be performed before the new coding is changed, otherwise the new



coding will not be accepted by the control unit.



5. If no parameterization is suggested (Only for A4/S4, A5/S5, Audi Q5, A7, or D4 A8), or if no coding is suggested (Only for TT, A3, R8 GT,



R8 GT Spyder, A5 Cabriolet, or C6 A6), then check the color code on the control units service part label. Compare this color code to the



suggestion given by EKTA using the FI search function. If they do not match then re-order the correct part listed in EKTA. If they match, then



contact the Technical Assistance Center.



6. After the parameterization is complete (Not applicable to the TT, A3, R8 GT, R8 GT Spyder, A5 Cabriolet, or C6 A6), the coding of the

control unit will be automatically carried out by SVM (no user input required). If you are prompted to change the coding, then enter a "YES"



response.



7. At the end of the SVM communication a screen will indicate all changes that were made during the SVM communication. Please verify the



changes and ensure the coding was performed.



8. Exit SVM and perform the component protection test plan to remove the remaining DTCs.

Wagon Vs. Crossover – What Is The Best Option For You?

Can the modern crossover really compete on space and value compared to the good old wagon?

In the strictest sense of the word, a crossover is built using a car based platform while an SUV uses a truck chassis. While this is not always adhered to, in general smaller high-riding off-road capable vehicles tend to be crossovers while the big Ford Expeditions and Chevy Tahoes of this world are most definitely SUVs. These smaller crossovers have become massively popular of late and we took a closer look to unearth whether they indeed are the better option to the once ubiquitous wagon.

The Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen is a solid entry-level wagonequipped with a capable 170-hp 1.8-liter engine and enough space for a familyof four and their luggage. You get an impressive 66.5 cubic feet of load spacewith the rear seats folded flat. At a starting price of $21,995 you willstruggle to find more space for the price.

VW has another wagon called the Alltrack that adds VW’s 4MOTION AWD system and raises the ride-height a bit. It comes in at $25,995 before options and does anything that a crossover can do only a little bit closer to the ground. The AWD system will actually get you further than most base crossovers as those tend to be FWD.

VW refers to the Tiguan as a compact SUV but it is clearly a crossover. Costing the same as the Sportwagen it seems like a bargain. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four is also a tad more powerful at 200 hp but the fuel economy suffers as a result and the heavier body shell means that performance is no better. You will have to pay extra for AWD but even with it equipped it undercuts the Alltrack. The real cost of going with the Tiguan Limited is the reduced cargo area and the fact that it is the old model which means that safety and available tech will be far from class-leading.

But wait, the new Tiguan offers all of the latest safety and tech. Surprisingly though its 2.0-liter turbo motor makes 184-hp instead of the older cars 200 but economy and torque are better. It can also be loaded with 73.5 cubic feet of your stuff with the seats folded. All good news then, even the price is reasonable at $24,595. Less than the Alltrack but it is worth noting that if you go for the top SEL Premium AWD model your wallet will be $37,550 lighter. Stick to the base model and it may well be the best option from our choices.

The A4 is a solid sedan trading blows withBMW and Mercedes in terms of performance and technology. While Audi’s fastwagon reputation is firmly entrenched in Europe we are offered a single wagonin the form of the A4 allroad. It offers an adjustable ride-height, 53 cubicfeet of load space, AWD and comes packed with all the kit you would expect fromthis premium brand. $44,500 is not exactly cheap, but this car is equally athome on and off the road.

The Q5 is all-new for 2018 and it offers the absolute latest in technology. Its 252-hp turbo motor is shared with the A4 allroad and is strong and frugal but performance and economy figures are slightly down thanks to the extra weight. It does offer slightly more cargo capacity at 54.7 cubic feet. At $41,500 for the Premium trim it is $3,000 cheaper though and with not much of a difference in specifications to justify it, the Q5 takes another victory for the crossover.

Right then, surely the venerableMercedes-Benz wagon can claw back some points. In E-Class trim you get thesensible E400 4Matic ,which at $63,050 comes packed with the prerequisite techto justify its price tag. You get 64 cubic feet of space behind the front seats,handy for when you need to move house. The 329-hp twin-turbo is quite nice too.

The GLE 350 SUV (although in the strictest sense it is car based so it is a crossover) comes in at a reasonable sounding $52,200. That’s a big saving over the wagon and at 80.3 cubic feet of rear-seat folded cargo capacity, it is more spacious too. You get a slightly anemic 305-hp 3.5-liter V6 though, which struggles to lug the heavy GLE around and uses more fuel than the wagon too. You will need the big-boy 385-hp GLE 43 for some proper performance, but then the price shoots up to $67,750 and the fuel economy is not so great either. So, a win for the E-Class Wagon. Finally.

‘But what about the GLC 43?’ I hear you say. Its 362-hp twin-turbo motor makes it even quicker than the E400 and it uses hardly any more fuel while going about its business. At $56,250 it also costs a fair bit less than the wagon, but aside from more rear legroom, the E-Class is bigger inside and isn’t that what a crossover / SUV / wagon is all about? On that note, the 56.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity also trails the E400.

Volvo has raised its interior design game to a level that has left the rest of the field choking on its Scandinavian style. The efficient engines and class-leading safety systems just rub salt into the wounds; the brand new V60 is a perfect example of the breed. 306-hp, AWD and lots of tech are on offer. What has fallen by the wayside is the load-lugging boxy old wagon shape, replaced by a rear hatch that cuts into the cargo space giving a total of just 43.8 cubic feet. The outgoing model started at $38,000 so expect the new V60 to add a few digits to that figure.

The XC60 is also a very recent addition to the range and in the US it can be had with a range of engine options. The base 250-hp T5 starts off at $41,500 which should be similar to the new V60’s pricing. It too suffers a bit in the cargo-carrying stakes thanks to the tapered tail but you can still load 63.3 cubic feet of goodies in the back. Less than a VW Sportwagen but more than a V60, so the crossover wins this battle too.

In the final reckoning, the popularity of the crossover seems well-deserved. For a small sacrifice in fuel economy and performance you get the benefit of a higher driving position, more cargo carrying capacity than an equivalent model in the range, and as we have found, you are not always penalized on the pricing either. Now if driving dynamics were taken into consideration perhaps the outcome would have turned out differently.

This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:



2.0 T Engine camshaft adjuster replacement.



This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect until removed.



Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:



^ Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the 15D6 code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.



^ Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.



^ Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.



^ Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in dealer inventory prior to sale.



Technical Background



On Audi vehicles with 2.0L TFSI engines built within a specific period, it is possible that the non-return valve on the camshaft adjuster (bearing



saddle) may break. As a result, fragments of the non-return valve can enter the lubrication system.

Longitudinal engine:



1. Pull off engine cover panel (Figure 1, arrows).



2. Detach connector from camshaft control valve (Figure 2, 1).



3. Remove bolts (4 total) (Figure 2, arrows) and detach camshaft control valve.

Tip: Catch escaping oil with a cloth.



4. Remove wire harness from timing chain cover (Figure 3).



5. Unscrew bolts in order (Figure 4, 1-5) ( and remove timing chain cover.



Note:



The control valve has a left-hand thread.

6. Unscrew control valve in direction indicated by arrow (clockwise) using assembly tool T10352.



Tip: Catch escaping oil with a cloth.



7. Remove bolts. (7 total)



8. Place cloth under bracket (bearing saddle) to catch escaping oil and any parts of non-return valve that may drop out.

9. Replace bracket (bearing saddle).



Tip: Lubricate bearing surface with oil before installing.



Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

Audi Launching Full-On Assault At Mercedes And BMW With Porsche's Help

If quattro isn't helping, bring in those ass-engined geniuses from Stuttgart.

There’s embracing the future and then there’s diving in feet first, and maybe it’s the company’s desire to cleanse itself of the smoggy image Dieselgate brought about, but Volkswagen and its army of well-engineered allies seem the most intent on pushing the bar line higher and higher. Its technologically advanced lineup just doesn’t cut it anymore, and the latest news from Audi’s mouth details how a handful of sexy SUVs, sleek range-toppers, and advanced EVs will bring Audi up to par with the rest of the German luxury segment.

Mercedes and BMW are content doing battle at the top, but Audi may soon catch up if the two aren't careful. “We are rejuvenating our model portfolio enormously and will renew five existing core model series by mid-2018,” stated Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “In addition, we will expand our successful Q family by 2019 with two new concepts – the Audi Q8 and the Audi Q4 – and we will launch our battery-electric e-tron models.” Stadler’s words are a boon to fans of the Q8 and the cheaper Q4 that will utilize Mercedes’ and BMW’s strategy of selling coupe-like SUVs to up sales figures.

Stadler made no mention as to what the five core models are, but Autocar notes that it’s likely the A1, A6, A7, A8, and Q3. Come July 11th, Audi will pull the covers off of the new A8 in Barcelona, hopefully giving movie studios all the reason to recast the Four Rings flagship alongside Jason Statham in a new Transporters movie. The car Statham wouldn’t be as enthusiastic to drive is the hybrid version of the A8 and its accompanying A7 hybrid, which will be out when the four-door coupe is re-released. That will be soon after the A8 as Audi is taking this year to focus on its top trim models. Following that, three e-tron vehicles are set for release by 2020, part of a push to electrify 30% of the Four Rings’ lineup by 2025.

One interesting note to make is the upcoming appearance of Porsche technology in Audis (and vice versa). The two automakers recently collaborated to share tech and platforms in order to cut research and development costs, which could mean that Audi switches to rear-wheel drive dominant platforms. This would be a welcome change since any current Audi without quattro all-wheel drive gets power to the front wheels. Mercedes may be focusing on its AMG lineup while BMW appeases the 1%, but Audi is poised to cutdown those two automakers' slices of pie by appealing to the futurist in all of us.
