Technical Background



Due to a faulty and/or incorrectly installed condensation drain hose, condensation from the evaporator could enter the front foot well areas through a



gap between the body and the sealing surface of the drain hose.



Production Solution



Improved condensation drain hoses and improved installation process in production.



Service



1. Expose both condensation drain hoses and inspect for incorrect installation, kinks or obstructions that could compromise proper removal of



the condensation from the A/C system water drain. Refer to ElsaWeb >> Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning >> 87 Air Conditioning



>> Removal and Installation >> Condensation Water Drain Hose.

2. Inspect both drain hoses to identify if they are incorrectly assembled. An incorrectly assembled condensation drain hose is one where the



locating tab is pointing up (Figure 1). The correct orientation for this locating tab should be pointing down.



When the snap ring is installed upside down, it allows condensation to leak out through a hole at the bottom of the snap ring (Figure 2). The



water can then migrate into either of the front footwell carpeted areas.



3. Should the snap ring have been incorrectly installed to the body of the vehicle, do not repair the condensation drain hose assembly. Replace



the hose using the repair procedure in ElsaWeb >> Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning >> 87 Air Conditioning >> Removal and



Installation >> Condensation Water Drain Hose. Improper installation at the factory may have damaged the snap feature (opposite the locating



tab), thus creating a poor seal to the body.



Service parts have been checked, but it is still possible to receive unchecked parts. Corrected parts will be marked in white on the locating tab.



This tab must be pointing down (Figure 3).



4. If the locating tab on the new part is in the wrong position (pointing up), then use a small set of needle nose pliers to gently pull the snap ring



out of the rubber hose and align it in the correct position (pointing down). Dipping the end of the hose in soapy water may make the process



easier.

5. Reinstall the snap ring in the correct position (Figure 4).



6. Connect the hose to the body before connecting it to the A/C system water drain. Insert the locating tab (bottom of the hose) into the body hole



and press the top portion of the snap ring into place.



There should be an audible click to indicate the hose has made a firm connection.



7. Inspect the seal by gently tugging on the hose to ensure it is completely seated.



8. Connect the top of the hose to the A/C system water drain. Ensure that when installed there is no kink or twist in the hose. If necessary, install



a tie wrap at the A/C system water drain end of the hose if a more secure connection is required.



9. Repeat for the other side.

Technical Background



Because there are a number of different misfire faults (unrelated to ignition coil operation) that could cause the MIL to illuminate, proper Guided



Fault Finding (GFF) misfire diagnosis must be followed before any ignition coils are replaced.

Obtain information from the customer

Ask the customer the following questions about the symptoms of the condition and when it occurred. This information will be necessary for



duplicating the condition during service.



^ In what situation (while turning, etc.) does the condition occur?



^ Under what environmental conditions (road conditions, weather, temperature, start conditions, etc.) does the condition occur?



^ What is the operating situation of the vehicle (activated electrical equipment, gear selected, etc.) when the condition occurs?



^ Can the complaint be reproduced?



Workshop procedure



1. Read out the data memory of all engine control units and note the environmental conditions on the DTC log.



^ If there are other entries in addition to combustion misfires, address the other entries before addressing the cylinder misfires.



^ If DTC P0301 - P0304 (Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected) is accompanied by DTC P1250 (Fuel Level Too Low), it



is likely the faults occurred due to a low fuel level and not due to a malfunction of the coils.



^ Review all applicable technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to cylinder misfires and ECM software improvements before diagnosing the



misfire condition. For example, if the data shows that the DTC was set during cold start, search ElsaWeb for TSBs related to cold start



misfires.



2. Try to duplicate the customer complaint based on the environmental conditions at the time the DTC was set. The freeze frame data gives



important indicators for the traceability of the complaint, particularly if it occurs sporadically or at cold start.



3. Review the vehicle repair history for previous misfire service or other maintenance service that could be related to the current complaint.



4. Observe the requirements of GFF. Perform GFF in full according to the proposed sequence (test plan). Do not skip any steps.



5. Complete Guided Fault Finding correctly and set the readiness code. Doing so will ensure that no subsequent faults occur due to the misfire.



6. In the case of single cylinder misfires:



^ Before replacing components, exchange the coils to determine whether the condition migrates to the other cylinders after the coils have been



exchanged. If necessary, perform a test drive to test the condition.



Note:



Always use special tool T40039 to remove ignition coils.



^ If the misfire migrates to another cylinder with an exchanged coil, replace only the affected coil.



7. Verify the repair under the same environmental conditions (engine speed, engine load value, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, intake air



temperature, ambient air pressure, voltage at terminal 30, etc.) as noted on the DTC log.

Customer complaint:



Steering wheel oscillation at highway speeds.



Workshop findings:



^ Steering wheel oscillation, typically at a speed between 70 and 85 mph.



^ TSB 2022179 has been completed and the 1st harmonic of radial force of every tire and wheel assembly is below 18 lbs. at a tire pressure of



2.5bar.



^ Audi original equipment tires are installed on the vehicle.



^ The complaint does not involve vibration in the seat surface or other vehicle components.



Technical Background



Steering wheel vibrations and oscillations are caused by uneven roads, wheel imbalance, impermissibly high radial forces of the tires or other



rotating components on the front of the vehicle.



These ride disturbances are transmitted from the front axle and the steering system to the steering wheel.



Steering wheel oscillations are visible side-to-side movements of the steering wheel spokes and no other vibrations such as in the driver seat or the



vehicle floor are involved. If there are vibrations in the complete vehicle, i.e. in the driver seat and vehicle floor, installing the guide links with



updated bushings will not resolve the concern.



Production Solution



Updated front guide links (aka wishbone links) are equipped with larger fluid-filled bushings that help dampen steering wheel oscillation.



Service



1. Clearly verify steering wheel oscillation. Ensure TSB 2022179 has been completed and Audi original equipment tires are installed on the



vehicle. Each wheel and tire assembly must have less than 18 lbs. of road force variation.

2. Inspect the front guide links to determine which guide links are installed. The guide link is pictured in Figure 3, point 7.



The updated guide link has a larger fluid-filled bushing that is 75 mm in diameter.



3. If the vehicle is equipped with the original guide links that have the smaller 65 mm bushing, search ETKA by VIN and check the size of the



shouldered hex. nut (6). Example of the ETKA screen shot is pictured in Figure 5, point 6. Determine which guide links are required based on

the following:



^ For size M12 shouldered hex. nut use 8K0 498 998 guide link conversion kit - M12



^ For size M14 shouldered hex. nut use 8K0 498 998 A guide link conversion kit - M14



Tip: Guide links are available with two different size ball joints which are not interchangeable. Use the shouldered hex. nut (6) size to



determine the correct guide link for the VIN.



4. Install updated guide link conversion kit per the Required Parts and Tools chart below. If the kit part number is not available, guide links can



be ordered by their individual part numbers.



Tip: The bolts and nuts used to install the guide links are one-time-use and must be replaced after each removal.

Technical Background



Torque sticks and torque extension bars are not approved by Audi of America, Inc. and should not be used to apply torque to wheel bolts.



Always use a calibrated torque wrench to attain the correct wheel bolt torque. Proper use of a calibrated torque wrench ensures that all wheel bolts



are tightened equally and reduces the chances of repeat repairs.



Using methods other than a calibrated torque wrench to attain correct wheel bolt torque may lead to the following problems:

steering wheel, etc.) are inoperative or incorrectly assigned when using the remote key.



Technical Background



The memory settings for each key are stored in the individual control unit (depending on the function) and not in the key itself.



Only the identification of the currently used remote key is transmitted on the CAN bus. Each participating control unit sets its own adjustments.

Service



To rule out the key as the root cause, check whether the remote key is correctly identified by the vehicle.



TIP:



Only keys on positions 1 to 4 are included in the personalized memory settings functions. Keys from position 5 cannot be personalized.

- A4 (B7), A4 Cabriolet: Check MVB 7 in the convenience control unit (address word 46).

In most cases the replacement of the clutch slave cylinder or master cylinder does not fix the complaint.

Service



Check the clutch hydraulics and electrics as follows:



1. Depress the clutch pedal to the perceived end stop.



On the clutch master cylinder a second mechanic opens the bleeder screw.



2. If the clutch pedal can now be moved further and the vehicle can be started, or the message "Press clutch pedal to start vehicle" in the cluster goes



out, the sender of the clutch mechanism is correct.



3. Close the bleeder screw on the clutch master cylinder.



The complaint is in the clutch mechanism (wear, check according to repair manual). Do not replace the master cylinder or the slave cylinder for this



condition.

^ Light bulb warning light and the message Vehicle lights: malfunction is displayed in the instrument cluster display.



^ DTC 03280 (Light switch position implausible signal) is stored in the vehicle electrical system control module, J519 (09).



^ Exterior lights are functioning properly.



Technical Background



If the headlight switch is moved to an intermediate position and remains there, the light bulb warning light and the error message appear after



approximately ten seconds (Figure 1).

Once displayed, the message turns off after approximately five seconds. The light bulb warning light turns off only after the headlight switch is



turned to a defined position, and the status of DTC 03280 is changed to sporadic.



After 40 driving cycles without an implausible signal detected, the DTC is automatically cleared.

Determine if the above situation applies to the vehicle, and explain the background to the customer. Replacing parts does not change the behavior.

^ The customer may report that the engine does not start. After waiting for several minutes (CAN bus system silence), the engine can be started.



^ The 19 - Data bus on board diagnostic interface J-533 software version is between 095 and 120.



Technical Background



Communication issue on the powertrain CAN bus caused by the wake-up-monitor within J-533 (Gateway).

Modified 19 - Data bus on board diagnostic interface J-533 software (adjusted wake-up-monitor strategy).

1. Check the diagnosis protocol for the following entries:





DTC 4719 in 01 - Engine Electronics.





DTC 12583424 in 15 - Airbag.





DTC 1312 in 19 - Data bus on board diagnostic interface.



Besides these relevant entries, other control units may also have communication entries stored.



SVM Update Instructions



2. Follow all instructions in the attached TSB 2011732 00 Software Version Management (SVM), operating instructions.



3. Check the software version of J-533. Update the software as needed using the SVM action code listed in the table above.



4. Through Vehicle Self Diagnosis, change adaptation channel 7 in J-533 to HEX 030000 to re enable the wake-up-monitor.

This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:

For certain Audi vehicles manufactured within a specific period, a software update must be performed for the tire pressuring monitoring system



(TPMS or ESP/ABS control unit) to correct a system malfunction logic.



This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect until January 10, 2013. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.



Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:



^ This RVU is in effect for only unsold vehicles in dealer inventory.



^ Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the 44H9 code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.



^ Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.



^ Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.



^ Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in dealer inventory prior to sale.



Technical Background



Incorrect Tire Pressure Monitoring System malfunction logic in the TPMS or ESP/ABS control module (address word 4C or 03) may cause the Tire



Pressure Monitoring System malfunction warning to extinguish prematurely.

2. Update the TPMS or ESP/ABS control unit using the SVM action code as listed in the table above if necessary.



3. While the software is updating, adjust tire pressures in each tire to factory-recommended tire pressure settings.



Tip: After the software update, the TPMS indicator in the IP cluster may illuminate.



4. With key on and/or engine running, on the MMI, select Car >> Tire Pressure Monitoring >> Store Now >> Confirm.

Condition



The turn signal indicator lens is inoperative without any damage from outside influence. Cracks have formed in the lens and as a result condensation



can be seen behind the lens as shown in Figure 1.



Technical Background



The turn signal lens can crack due to the high amount of tension in the side mirror housing. The tension is due to improper installation of the mirror



at the factory and is not a defect in the mirror housing. Replacing the mirror housing will not affect this condition.

1. Remove the side mirror as instructed by the ElsaWeb Repair manual.

Cigarette lighter element will not lock in lighter socket -U1- for heating process.



TECHNICAL BACKGROUND



Retaining tabs (2) in the lighter socket are pushed too far out of the socket to hold the lighter element in place for the heating process. Generally, this



is caused by using the lighter socket as a power outlet for accessories such as cell phone chargers, radar detectors, etc.



PRODUCTION SOLUTION



Not applicable.



SERVICE



1. Remove cigarette lighter fuse.



2. Remove lighter element.

3. Using a flat blade screwdriver, bend retaining tabs (Figure 1, arrow) inward.



4. Install lighter element and fuse.



5. Test operation several times to ensure lighter pops out and functions normally.
