And the project, it seems, it picking up speed.

Now over eight months since its debut, the concept has evolved into the Pop.Up Next, showcased at Drone Week in Amsterdam – albeit not in full size. This concept is a 1:4 scale model with a tiny car docking into a quadricopter not unlike those you can buy from companies like DJI or Parrot (or build yourself from a kit).

“Flying taxis are on the way. We at Audi are convinced of that,” said Audi tech chief and Italdesign president Dr. Bernd Martens. “More and more people are moving to cities. And more and more people will be mobile thanks to automation.”

While it's working on the Pop.Up Next project with its partners, Audi is developing parallel programs like the Airbus' Voom initiative, which pairs helicopter charters in Mexico City and Sao Paulo with Audis to complete the last mile to the destination, and the Urban Air Mobility project in its home town of Ingolstadt.

In the future, continued Martens, “senior citizens, children, and people without a driver’s license will want to use convenient robot taxis. If we succeed in making a smart allocation of traffic between roads and airspace, people and cities can benefit in equal measure.”

One of the most dangerous racing series ever devised, it spawned by far the most powerful rally cars the sport had ever seen, which also led to legendary homologation road car variants like the Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro S1.

These cars were so overpowered that frequent fatalities led to the series being scrapped in the late 1980s four years after it started. As Donut Media explains, Group B started in 1982 as a class where there were practically no car regulations. Group A, by comparison, had a lot of restrictions from the power, weight and cost.

Homologation requirements meant that 5,000 models also had to be mass produced with four seats. In contrast, Group B only required 200 production models, two seats and no restrictions on boost. This of course increased the danger – watch some archive footage and prepare to gasp in awe as these fearless drivers tear through narrow sections of dirt, asphalt and snow while narrowly avoiding unprotected spectators. Sadly, Group B was shortlived and was cancelled in 1986 after fatal crashes forced it to end. As the cars became more powerful and the drivers more daring, a catastrophe was inevitable.

In 1986, driver Joaquim Santos ploughed into a group of spectators in his Ford RS200 during the Portugeese rally while trying to avoid a small group of fans on the road. 31 people were injured and three were killed in the crash. Shortly after, driver Henri Toivonen's Lancia Delta S4 flew off the side of the road during the Tour de Corse rally and burst into flames, killing both him and his co-driver. Group B cars were outright banned in 1987, and rallying was never the same again.

With the confidence of an automaker that’s endured one of the most damaging scandals in recent memory and literally come out on top, Volkswagen AG is enlisting the technological prowess of its Four Rings wing to develop an electric SUV to cut away at some of the Jaguar’s dealership crowd. Autocar has just spotted what will likely be Audi’s e-tron-badged SUV. Roaming the streets with camouflage, it appears that the Audi SUV is in its final testing phase before it’s ready to sell.

This backs up previous reports to Autocar that the Four Rings would be the first premium luxury automaker to offer an electric SUV to the masses (the Tesla Model X isn’t exactly priced in a manner that's friendly to the crowds). Audi is eyeing a 2018 launch date and a price point around that of a well-spec’d A6. Not quite as friendly as what the Tesla Model Y could be priced at, but low enough to convince more EV-curious to jump on board with the purchase if it beats the Jag to market. Battery technology is cited as being advanced, with a 311-mile range being within the realm of possibility. Audi’s major challenge now will be to find a way to expand charging infrastructure, but it seems to be well on its way to covering those bases.

Audi Is About To Get A New CEO Because Its Current One Is Still Locked Up

Current and apparently soon to be outgoing Audi CEO Rupert Stadler is at this very moment sitting in jail. He was arrested last month following allegations he attempted to tamper with evidence during the Volkswagen Dieselgate investigation. It doesn’t seem like he’ll be released anytime soon and even if were, it’s not like he can go back to his job as if nothing happened.

Perhaps that’s why, according to Automotive News, the Volkswagen Group is about to appoint BMW purchasing director Markus Duesmann as Audi’s next CEO, effective January 1, 2019. It’s not particularly surprising to hear of a high-level executive being poached by a rival brand.

In fact, current Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess also worked at BMW as purchasing chief until 2015. But why won’t Duesmann start work at Audi earlier? Supposedly it’s because his current contract with BMW doesn’t expire until sometime in the fall and it includes a clause preventing him from going to work for a rival immediately. There’s a short cooling off period it seems.

Duesmann is a mechanical engineer by training and has worked at BMW since 2007. Before that, he worked at Mercedes-Benz as head of Formula 1 powertrain. As for Stadler, well… Volkswagen and Audi rightly claim he’s innocent until proven guilty but the legal process isn’t likely to end anytime soon. Will his case go to trial? Will he strike a plea bargain?

These are questions that can’t be answered and Audi needs to continue going about business as usual. Its sales chief, Bram Schot, is currently filling in as interim CEO until Duesmann is able to get started. Fortunately for Audi, sales remain stellar. Only a few weeks ago did it report that worldwide deliveries increased by 4.5 percent since the start of the year for a total of 949,300 units.

Audi May Ultimately Ditch The V10 But What About V8s?

Change is happening in the auto industry as we speak. From Ford to GM to the VW Group, the permanent changeover from internal combustion to electrification is underway. However, internal combustion engine technology very much still has its place today and the near-term future. Speaking to Automotive News Europe, newly installed Audi board member for technical development Peter Mertens admitted that yes, Audi buyers will keep demand alive for V8 engines, but the W12 and V10 could very well be on their way out.

“We will thin out our engine-transmission combinations, but entire engine families might also disappear,” Mertens said. “Do we really need a V10 and W12 for the next generation of cars? We get questioned about the (future of the) V8, and in particular the diesel, but I cannot imagine we will do without it. We have a very important group of customers that really wants eight-cylinder engines in larger vehicles. Will it exist forever? No, but (it will) for a rather long time.” This is quite a statement, especially from someone so high up within the VW Group. Eventually though, that V8 demand will, more than likely, fade away as consumers become more adapted to what’s about to come: EVs and autonomous driving.

Speaking of which, Audi is currently the only automaker in the world that has a Level 3 Autonomy vehicle on sale, the all-new A8. Mertens added that Audi is hard at work on achieving Level 4, which is expected to be ready in no more than five years’ time. Level 5 is the highest possible rating for autonomous driving, and Audi just revealed a concept at Frankfurt last month with that capability.
