Will Audi's 760-HP Electric Supercar Enter Production?

Audi designers are working hard to make it happen – but putting the concept into production presents several challenges.

Audi’s much-anticipated e-tron GT concept finally made its debut at the 2018 LA Auto Show last week with the Tesla Model S firmly in its sights. But it wasn’t the only electric Audi E-Tron concept revealed this year. Back in the summer at Pebble Beach, Audi revealed the PB18 E-Tron, a driver-focused electric supercar concept that could preview the Audi R8’s future replacement. Audi hasn’t confirmed plans to put it into production, but designers are working hard to make it happen according to Autocar.

Speaking at the LA Auto Show, Audi exterior design chief Andreas Mindt told the publication the design team are “absolutely pushing” the car for production and were the “engine” in the company driving for it to be built. However, giving it the green light won’t be an easy decision for Audi as it would need to overcome several challenges to put the electric supercar concept into production.

The car’s central driving position, for example, would require Audi to develop a new drive-by-wire steering system. This would be very expensive and difficult to justify for a low-volume car. The cockpit’s unconventional design would also be difficult to implement in the production model. In the concept, the driver’s seat and dashboard can also be positioned in two ways: either to the left of the interior like a typical road car, or in the center, as in a traditional race car.

Mindt also said engineers would need to develop adequate cooling systems for the powerful all-electric powertrain. The concept was powered by three electric motors, with one mounted within the front axle delivering 201 hp and another two positioned on either side of the rear axle producing 234 hp each. This results in a combined output of 671 hp, but a boost function increases this to 764 hp for short bursts of acceleration.

With this setup, Audi claimed the PB18 E-Tron concept could sprint from 0-62 mph in two seconds and hit a top speed of over 186 mph. The PB18 E-Tron concept also uses solid-state batteries with a capacity of 95 kWh, but the technology is not yet ready for production.

Over 500,000 Audis Are Being Recalled Over Airbag Safety Issues

As if the VW Group didn't already have enough to worry about right now.

Volkswagen may be celebrating the news that it overtook Toyota to become the best-selling manufacturer of 2016, but we don't think spirits are too high. The company is still recovering from the aftermath of Dieselgate after all. A major recall for over 500,000 Audi vehicles in the United States certainly won’t help make the Germans feel any better either. The recall concerns issues with the airbag and coolant pumps overheating in several Audi models. The first part of the recall affects 234,054 Audi Q5s produced between 2011 and 2017.

According to the NHTSA, it was discovered that the sunroof drainage system may allow water to soak into the foam surrounding the side-curtain airbag inflator canister. Should this happen, the canister could corrode and potentially rupture, showering occupants with metal fragments. The situation may sound similar to the fatal issues with Takata’s airbags that affected millions of cars, but this is an entirely separate issue. Plus, the Q5’s airbag inflators are developed by iSi Automotive, not Takata. The recall will start this month and will involve the water drainage system for the sunroof and side curtain airbag canisters being inspected. If required, the inflator will be replaced or repaired by sealing it with wax.

A separate airbag-related recall has been issued to 5,901 Audi and Volkswagen 2017 and 2018 models as the airbag may not deploy properly and the seat belt pre-tensioners may not activate correctly. If that wasn’t already enough, another 342,867 models are being recalled due to issues with the coolant pump of FSI engines becoming blocked and overheating. Affected vehicles include the Audi Q5, A5 and A5 Cabriolet models from 2013-2017, Audi Allroads and A4s from 2013-2016 and A6s from 2012-2015. In this case, a simple software update will resolve the issue by cutting power supply to the coolant pump if overheating is detected.

Audi's Not Kidding About Developing Flying Taxi Concept

Italdesign and Airbus join Audi at Drone Week in Amsterdam.

Pie in the sky. That's where we filed away Audi's flying taxi concept when it debuted at the Geneva Motor Show back in March. But Audi, it turns out, wasn't kidding, and neither were its partners.

Stemming from a joint effort between the German automaker, its sister studio Italdesign, and passenger-jet consortium Airbus, the Pop.Up project envisions a multi-modal form of transportation consisting of an autonomous vehicle that docks into an aircraft so that passengers can be whisked around through the air and on ground. And the project, it seems, it picking up speed.

Now over eight months since its debut, the concept has evolved into the Pop.Up Next, showcased at Drone Week in Amsterdam – albeit not in full size. This concept is a 1:4 scale model with a tiny car docking into a quadricopter not unlike those you can buy from companies like DJI or Parrot (or build yourself from a kit).

“Flying taxis are on the way. We at Audi are convinced of that,” said Audi tech chief and Italdesign president Dr. Bernd Martens. “More and more people are moving to cities. And more and more people will be mobile thanks to automation.”

While it's working on the Pop.Up Next project with its partners, Audi is developing parallel programs like the Airbus' Voom initiative, which pairs helicopter charters in Mexico City and Sao Paulo with Audis to complete the last mile to the destination, and the Urban Air Mobility project in its home town of Ingolstadt.

In the future, continued Martens, “senior citizens, children, and people without a driver’s license will want to use convenient robot taxis. If we succeed in making a smart allocation of traffic between roads and airspace, people and cities can benefit in equal measure.”

Ronaldo Given Brand New Audi RS7 As Real Madrid Receive New Audis

Every player received a brand new car. It's a hard life being a professional football player.

As part of obligations as one of the club’s main sponsors, every year Audi presents Real Madrid players and staff with a brand new company car. The Four Rings have featured prominently with the European champions since they joined forces back in 2003, since when the players and coaching staff have taken home a range of different models. The result of the partnership is a yearly photoshoot where each player is pictured taking delivery of their car of choice. Plus the players are contractually obliged to drive their new rides to training each day.

Star striker Cristiano Ronaldo, unsurprisingly, went for the most powerful Audi available – the RS7 Sportback Performance finished in Panther Black. Not a bad daily driver, but we’re sure he’ll be itching to show up to the Santiago Bernabeu in his stunning new Bugatti Chiron. Like everyone else in the world, the players’ model of choice was an SUV. Specifically, the Audi Q7, which 14 players picked in various iterations. Gareth Bale and Isco were two that took the SUV route with the Q7 Sport. RS models also proved popular of course.

Manager Zinedine Zidane opted for a Daytona Gray Audi RS6 Avant Performance, while captain Sergio Ramos went all out, driving home a R8 Spyder, finished in Ibis White with a red roof. The cheapest Audi on the list was a S5, which Marco Asensio decided was suitable for his needs. Other players of note include sharp shooter Karim Benzema who looked happy with his Audi RS5 2.9 TFSI, while Toni Kroos was the only player to pick the Audi SQ5. Prior to the handover of the company cars, the players were able to perform a virtual test drive in the Audi e-tron FE04, which will have its first official race in the Formula E season opener in Hong Kong next weekend. Dani Carvajal finished quickest in the replica Formula E cockpit simulator.

2019 Audi R8 First Drive Review: More Power, Sharper Suit For Audi's Supercar

Enjoy the Lamborghini V10 while you still can.

There’s no other sports or supercar quite like the Audi R8 – it’s a paradoxical mix of high-tech infotainment and old school V10 engine; of Lamborghini genes and sensible-shoes usability; of searing performance at – in this rarefied segment – a relatively affordable price point. Now Audi has re-booted its mid-engined halo for 2019, admitting all variants to the 200-mph club in the process.

A relatively light tweak it might be, but with Audi rumored to axe the R8 after this second generation or re-imagine it as an all-electric or plug-in hybrid, this is our last chance to enjoy ten cylinders screaming to an incendiary 8,250 rpm.

As before, Coupe or Spyder models are available, both with all-wheel drive, an S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox and that scintillating V10 in two states of tune. When we ask if the cheaper rear-wheel-drive RWS might return, Audi Sport engineers look around nervously and don’t say no. Fingers crossed for that. For now, we’re driving the top-spec coupe: the V10 Performance. With the car still awaiting homologation, we’ve come to the Ascari racetrack in Spain for our drive.

Exterior Design: First Impressions

The changes to the R8 are relatively subtle, but even parked a distance away in the Ascari pit lane it looks different, especially the front: lower and wider, kind of like it’s wearing a mouthguard, but the new jaw is effective in creating a more purposeful look. Look closer and there’s a flatter front grille, three little slits at the leading edge of the hood that recall the Ur Quattro, and a new, wider front splitter.

Changes at the rear are less obvious, with the design team having to draw our attention to the more upswept rear diffuser.

Interior Design And Features

There are two new colors (Kemora Grey, Ascari Blue), new 19-inch alloys (20s for the V10 Performance) and some gloss-black detailing on the standard model, replaced by matte titanium on the Performance.

The interior is unchanged, but plus points include a great driving position, solid build with flashes of flair, and Audi’s virtual cockpit for a slick, modern feel. Important to remember that the Spyder, like before, has a tighter cockpit due to the roof mechanism – if you’re taller than six-feet, you’ll struggle for legroom.

Engine And Performance: Turning The V10 Up To 11

Both versions of the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 get extra power. The standard model now produces 533 hp at 8,250 rpm, an increase of 30 hp, and 406 lb-ft at a high 6,500 rpm, up 7 lb-ft. All of it is purely down to software calibration changes, and helps even the heavier Spyder to score 200 mph.

The Performance we’re driving now produces 612 hp and 428 lb-ft, which is 10 hp / 15 lb-ft stronger than before, and now a little beyond the Lamborghini Huracan too, if not the range-topping Huracan Performante.

These gains come from a valvetrain revised with titanium components as well as fresh ECU mapping. It means the V10 Performance coupe can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 3.1 seconds and reach 206 mph – one-tenth and 1 mph up on previously.

Revised Chassis

Audi engineers have played around with the chassis, though the basic spring rates and damper specs remain unchanged – there are apparently greater steps between the driving modes, but as we’re driving on track in the Dynamic ‘dry’ setting, we’ll have to wait for another test drive to spot those nuances.

All our test cars are fitted with a new optional anti-roll bar made from carbon fiber and aluminum. It’s laid out next to the standard item in the pit garages and the difference is striking – you could work out with the old one, where the new, 4.5-lb lighter roll bar wouldn’t so much as raise your heartbeat.

The choice of standard or Dynamic steering continues, both updated with calibration changes and available for us to sample. It’s also worth noting that all test cars are fitted with Michelin Cup 2 tires, optional track-focused rubber that you’ll find on a 911 GT3 and Ferrari 488 Pista. No-one at Audi seems to know which markets will be offered these tires.

At The Wheel

Ascari is a fast track, its fear factor multiplied by walls for run-off, blind, heartbeat entries to some corners, and other turns that seem to roll on forever in third and fourth gear, goading you to accelerate earlier than you really should.

Flatten the accelerator in first and the all-wheel drive claws at the pit exit’s dry surface, the V10 rips round past 8,000 rpm while the digital rev counter strobes red in the corner of your eye, and the first to second gear shift thwacks in, full of mechanical menace.

The bare figures tell you performance has moved on with the likes of the McLaren 720S, but this remains visceral acceleration that requires some acclimatisation, even if the small power hike is not particularly obvious.

Standard carbon-ceramic brakes fitted to the Performance (optional for lesser V10s) wipe off speed into the first tight, downhill left-hander – no ABS intervention, big stopping power, maybe a little bagginess at the top of the pedal – and as you aim for the apex, you get a first glimpse of the R8’s sweet balance off-throttle. It turns keenly and with modest, well-supported roll, partly a benefit of the mid-engined layout. But the downhill braking zone exaggerates the weight of the V10 in the back, which starts to swing round – it’s a balance that makes the R8 feel even more nimble and reactive, but it’s definitely a pendulum effect that must be anticipated and nursed.

The stability control’s unintrusive Sport setting and all-wheel drive helps, and under full power as the corner opens and quickens, the nose hooks up and pulls the car out. It switches the balance to a neutral, slightly understeery feeling, and you have to moderate the combination of front-end push and fast-escalating speed. The previous rear-wheel-drive R8 had a more fluid, less manic feeling, but it’s certainly sure-footed. Remember the standard tires will feel less precise on track.

At higher speeds and gears you get more time to appreciate the V10 –the crispness of its response, the linearity of the delivery, but more than anything it’s the bandwidth in the final 1,000 rpm of the rev range and a scream like a distressed chicken that makes the R8 so enjoyable.

The trade is that it feels less enthusiastic at lower revs than a turbo rival and you quickly bog down if you’re a gear too high, but super-quick gear shifts keep you in the power band, even if they do lose the mechanical edge of brutal low-speed acceleration at heartbeat speed.

After a few laps, it’s time to switch into a car with the Dynamic steering, complete with chassis engineer in the passenger seat. He’s candid that he prefers the standard system, but the Dynamic set-up works well, particularly through quick direction changes. There is, however, a less natural sense of support through the long, fast corners, where the slower, heavier feel of the regular steering is preferable. There’s no huge mistake to be made here, but we’d stick with the standard set-up.

Verdict, Prices And Trims

Despite a very mild makeover, the Audi R8 remains a compelling choice, one that’s unfairly overlooked. A McLaren 570S is a lighter, more nimble and more tactile feeling car, but the R8 is cheaper than its British rival and by far the more useable everyday proposition –better refinement, better technology, easier to actually climb into, and offering the security of all-wheel drive and a mainstream dealer network too. And it’s still a relatively safe and invigorating way to explore a racetrack.

More than anything though, the R8 gets our hearts racing because it combines all this level-headedness with a hand built naturally-aspirated Lamborghini V10 that sears and yelps and makes the 570S seem gruff and characterless in comparison. Don’t miss the chance to appreciate it while you still can.

Prices and on-sale dates are TBC, but expect the $165,000 entry model to increase to around $170,000 and the top-spec $194,000 V10 coupe to hit $200,000.

The Q8 Is Just The Start Of Audi's Ambitious SUV Onslaught

Audi allegedly plotting a Q1, Q6 and Q9 to further expand its SUV lineup.

With SUV sales showing no sign of slowing down, automakers are capitalizing on the demand and launching SUVs to slot into every imaginable segment. Audi has now unveiled the highly anticipated Q8 as the automaker’s new flagship SUV, but it’s just the start of an ambitious SUV onslaught. According to Autocar, Audi is allegedly planning to further expand its SUV lineup with a Q1, Q6 and Q9. The Q1 will reportedly arrive for the 2021 model year and will be the smallest crossover in Audi’s lineup positioned below the Q2.

Since the Q2 isn’t sold in the US, there’s probably little chance of the Q1 arriving in America if it does get the green light, however. This summer, Audi is expected to unveil an all-new Q3 subcompact crossover – and rumors suggest the 400-hp RS version will be sold in America for the first time. And just when you thought Audi couldn’t possibly justify producing any more crossover variants, the automaker has already confirmed the Q4 will arrive in 2019 in the form of a sleek coupe-style, five-seater SUV to rival the BMW X2 and Range Rover Evoque. It will be positioned as a more premium alternative to the Q3, so expect it to look like a shrunken version of the Q8.

Autocar suggests the Q6 will also fill a similar role as a more luxurious alternative to the Q5. The Q8 is Audi’s first attempt at a coupe-style SUV to rival the BMW X6, featuring Audi’s bold new styling language adapted from the A8 sedan, and a high-tech interior with touchscreens and a digital instrument display. In the US, it will be powered by a 340 hp 3.0-liter V6 engine. But while the Q8 acts as Audi’s new flagship SUV, rumors suggest the automaker is working on a Q9 to tap into the ultra-luxury SUV segment and join the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga. On August 30, Audi will also be revealing the electric e-tron with a 248-mile range, which could pose a serious threat to the Jaguar I-Pace.

Audi's E-Tron SUV Is About To Put A Huge Problem On Jaguar's Hands

A sneak attack from Audi will stifle Jaguar's plans to become a peer to Germany's Big Three.

Right now, Jaguar Land Rover is the underdog in this story, but its Tata Motors money is being spent well and the automaker is making exactly the moves it needs to in order to carve out a niche and get ahead of the much larger competition. The biggest blow to opposition forces was supposed to come from the I-Pace that debuted at the LA Auto Show. Good design and clever engineering carefully targets each selling point that’s making consumers spend a fortune on luxury SUVs will all be featured on the I-Pace.

With that sort of consumer seduction, the I-Pace seems poised to bring tiki torch-bearing mobs to the dealership to buy, but if you thought Jaguar’s rush to the top was going to go unchallenged, you’re living in a fantasy land. With the confidence of an automaker that’s endured one of the most damaging scandals in recent memory and literally come out on top, Volkswagen AG is enlisting the technological prowess of its Four Rings wing to develop an electric SUV to cut away at some of the Jaguar’s dealership crowd. Autocar has just spotted what will likely be Audi’s e-tron-badged SUV. Roaming the streets with camouflage, it appears that the Audi SUV is in its final testing phase before it’s ready to sell.

This backs up previous reports to Autocar that the Four Rings would be the first premium luxury automaker to offer an electric SUV to the masses (the Tesla Model X isn’t exactly priced in a manner that's friendly to the crowds). Audi is eyeing a 2018 launch date and a price point around that of a well-spec’d A6. Not quite as friendly as what the Tesla Model Y could be priced at, but low enough to convince more EV-curious to jump on board with the purchase if it beats the Jag to market. Battery technology is cited as being advanced, with a 311-mile range being within the realm of possibility. Audi’s major challenge now will be to find a way to expand charging infrastructure, but it seems to be well on its way to covering those bases.

BMW Trying To Stop One Of Its Senior Executives From Becoming Audi’s New CEO

It's called a non-compete clause.

A few days ago we learned Audi wants to hire Markus Duesmann to be its next CEO due to current CEO Rupert Stadler’s legal issues. He’s currently sitting in jail awaiting trial for his alleged Dieselgate role. Needless to say, Audi needs to move on and new leadership is required. Duesmann is well qualified for the job.

He’s an experienced automaker executive who up until very recently was employed by BMW as its procurement director. And that’s part of a new problem. BMW Blog, via German publication the FAZ, reports that BMW is activating its non-compete clause against Duesmann, thus putting his Audi future in jeopardy.

When first reports came out Duesmann was about to jump ship to Audi, BMW immediately released him from its board. However, there’s still a cooling off period, if you will. Although Audi would very much like for him to get started early next year, say in January, BMW could actually force a delay to that start date until October 2020.

This is not something unheard of in the auto industry, especially considering the frequency at which executives, designers, and engineers are poached by competitors. However, sometimes these non-compete clauses are not enacted, or there’s a negotiated settlement allowing for immediate employment at the new company.

In Duesmann’s case, however, that may not happen, and here’s why: his potential future boss, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess, was previously employed by BMW only a few years ago. BMW was not happy when he jumped ship, so why would it suddenly feel different towards Duesmann? It doesn’t. In fact, BMW could make an example out of Duesmann for any of its other top executives, saying something like ‘If you jump ship to a competitor, fine. But we won’t make it an easy transition because we legally don’t have to.’ Sounds like BMW is already engaging in that policy.

10 Audis That Show Why Custom Paint Is Always Best

Don't settle for a standard color. Go bold with one of these amazing cars.

One of our favorite options that we love to recommend on expensive cars is a custom paint job. Manufacturers sometimes have a different name for this option. For example, Porsche's is called paint-to-sample and Audi's is called Audi Exclusive Paint. We have shown off some of our favorite Audi colors over the years, but thanks to the exclusive paint option, all of them are still available for a cost. We did some digging and we found 10 brand new Audi models that have all been optioned with an amazing shade of Audi Exclusive Paint.

Our first car is a 2017 R8 V10 that has been painted in a lovely shade of Solar Orange. Even though Audi does offer the R8 in several bold colors such as Dynamite Red and Vegas Yellow, we love the way that the orange really pops on this car. This car is currently for sale for $198,400 at Audi Valencia in California.

Next we have a pair of 2018 Audi RS7 Performance models, both painted in unique shades of blue. The first car is painted in a famous Porsche color known as Mexico Blue. The car is currently for sale at Audi Central Houston for $141,832. The second car is painted in a darker shade of Mercato Blue and is currently for sale at Sloane Porsche Audi in Warrington, Pennsylvania for $146,725.

The second set of RS cars that we found was a pair of RS3 sedans, which are both painted in very different shades of green. This first RS3 is painted in a bright shade of Viper Green and is currently for sale at Audi of Tampa in Florida for $74,225. The second car is painted in a darker shade of Deep Green Pearl Effect and is currently for sale for $70,825 at VW Audi of Naples.

The final RS model on our list is a 2018 TT RS that is painted in a Merlin Purple. The car is currently for sale for $77,025 at Audi North Miami in Florida. The TT RS is currently the most rare RS model in the US, so finding one with an Audi Exclusive color like this one will not be easy.

The hardcore RS models are not the only cars that can be ordered with Audi Exclusive paint. We found several S models, including this 2018 S4 sedan, with some interesting paint options. This 2018 S4 is painted in the same Solar Orange that was found on the R8. The car is currently for sale for $72,025 at Audi Morton Grove in Illinois.

Finally, we managed to find a trio of 2018 Audi S5 models with Audi Exclusive Paint options. The first two are S5 Sportback models, which means that they have two rear doors and a fastback hatch design. The first car is painted in Nardo Grey, a popular Audi RS color that is not normally available on the S5. The car is currently for sale at Mentor Audi in Ohio for $72,800. The second Sportback is painted in Sprint Blue and is currently for sale at Audi West Palm Beach in Florida for $72,275. Finally, we also found an S5 Coupe painted in Alpine Green at Audi Escondido in California for $70,475.
