The Acura ILX Special Edition Is Further Proof This Car Is Slowly Dying

Why pay more for a previous generation Honda Civic with an Acura badge?

The Acura ILX, built on the same platform as the previous generation Honda Civic, keeps trucking along, rolling into the 2018 model year with a new special edition trim. Featuring 18-inch wheels, unique badges, and aero upgrades such as aggressive side sills and a rear spoiler from the A-spec models, this new ILX trim offers decent features for the money. Speaking of which, Acura wants you to pony up at least $29,850 for the special edition, which is $800 more than the base model.

If you feel like spending more on a more luxurious but still outdated Civic, then that Premium A-Spec is there for you, beginning at $33,050. The fully-loaded top trim Tech Plus A-Spec runs for $36,050. Regardless of trim, all ILXs are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 201 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. And yes, there’s also just a single transmission available, an eight-speed dual-clutch. The ILX was last updated for 2016, so other than the special edition there aren’t any other changes. Or, in other words, the ILX may be on borrowed time. Let’s face it, the sedan market isn’t what it once was. Considering the latest Honda Civic is larger than its predecessor, better equipped, and more powerful, the need for the ILX’s existence is dwindling.

A fully-loaded 2018 Civic sedan begins at $26,700, and won’t even hit the $30k mark with added options. See the ILX’s problem? Why pay more for something that’s outdated when the only thing you’ll get in return is an Acura badge? Makes no sense. Acura hasn’t commented on whether there’ll even be a second generation ILX, but if there were to be we’d imagine it’ll ride on the new Civic’s architecture. However, given the crossover hype and lower industry-wide sedan sales, chances are Acura will let the ILX fade away with no successor. Acura also happens to do quite well, sales wise, with its crossovers, so it’d make sense for it to focus on crossovers. Unless we hear otherwise, the ILX likely won’t be around for much longer.

Porsche Reveals Limited Edition Watch For New 911

The Timeless Machine edition is limited to just 911 examples.

Maybe the connection between cars and watches seems natural to you. Maybe it doesn't. But push come to shove, many of those buying high-end sports cars expect to have the timepiece to go with their new wheels. And Porsche is only too happy to oblige.

In fact the automaker's product-design branch has already come out with a new watch to go with the eighth-generation 911 that just debuted at the 2018 LA Auto Show. It's called the Porsche Design 911 Chronograph Timeless Machine Limited Edition, and it looks almost as slick as the sports car it's made to accompany.

Drawing on nearly half a decade of expertise in crafting wristwatches, the Timeless Machine borrows its structural case from Porsche Design's 1919 timepiece, crafted from hypoallergenic titanium. In between the sapphire crystal face and case-back sits an ETA Valjoux 7750 mechanical chronograph movement with Porsche Design rotor. It features a low-profile bezel with a black face (adorned by the silhouette of the new sports car), white hands, red sweeping second hand, and lap-timing sub-dials. And it's all affixed to the wrist with a strap made of the same leather used inside the new 911.

The firm founded by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, designer of the original 911, will only make a highly symbolic 911 examples of the Timeless Machine edition. It'll be available (while those quantities last from Porsche automobile dealers and Porsche Design boutiques) for an equally symbolic retail price of €4,911 (or about $5,600 at current exchange rates). If that strikes you as a little too rich for your blood, chances are you won't be shelling out $113,300 for a new Carrera S (let alone $120,600 for the Carrera 4S), but Porsche Design offers a less expensive 1919 Datetimer for €2,950 (~$3,350).

Audi RS6 Avant Performance Nogaro Edition Revealed With 700-HP

Limited to 150 units, this new special edition RS6 Avant is a tribute to Audi’s first-ever RS model launched in 1992.

The RS6 Avant Performance is one of the wildest wagons made by Audi Sport, packing a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing an impressive 597 horsepower. But now there’s a new special edition version that takes the high-performance wagon to a new extreme. Audi collaborated with the tuners at ABT Sportsline to build the RS6 Avant Performance Nogaro Edition that pays homage to the iconic RS2 that launched in 1994 as Audi’s first-ever RS model. Limited to only 150 units, its name is derived from its Nogaro Blue hue paint.

The eye-catching finish is complemented with an abundance of glossy black accents. It rides on black 21-inch wheels with beefy 285/30 tires and has been fitted with an RS titanium exhaust system. Under the hood lies the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 as the regular RS6 Avant but Audi worked with ABT to crank up the power output to a respectable 695 hp, making the Nogaro Edition one of the most powerful wagons on the planet. Torque has also been increased from 516 lb-ft to 649 lb-ft. This potent power enables the all-wheel drive wagon to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds and go on to hit a limited top speed of 189 mph with the optional Dynamic Package Plus installed.

Inside, the cabin features blue Alcantara upholstery on the seats, door panels, and knee pads, along with a black Alcantara headliner, blue contrast stitching, and special floor mats with blue piping. There’s also a carbon fiber trim with “Nogaro Edition” badging. If the eye-catching blue accents aren’t to your taste, Audi also offers a Nogaro Edition black edition which replaces the blue Alcantara upholstery with less prominent black Alcantara accents. In Germany, prices for the regular RS6 Avant Performance Nogaro Edition start at 124,200 Euros (around $154,400) and 130,000 Euros ($161,600) if you want the blue accents.

It’s a shame it won’t be sold in the US due to the declining popularity of wagons, but this hopefully serves as an appetizing taster for the next-generation RS6 Avant that could come stateside. It’s probably not worth holding your breath, though. That said, Audi of America President Scott Keogh recently revealed that a top secret RS model will launch in the US along with the RS5 Sportback, so there is still hope.

Limited Edition Aston Martin DBS 59 Celebrates Legendary Le Mans Victory

The car pays tribute to the legendary Aston Martin DBR1 racer that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959.

Aston Martin is honoring the legacy of the iconic DBR1 race car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 with the launch of a new special edition DBS Superleggera developed by the automaker’s Q personalization division. Commissioned by Aston Martin Cambridge, the Aston Martin DBS 59 features several unique design cues inspired by the DBR1 such as the gleaming Aston Martin Racing Green paintwork. There’s also extensive use of gloss finish carbon fiber on the roof, roof strake, and painted hood louvres, while bronze accents adorn the grille, spoiler and wheels.

The retro theme continues inside with a mix of Obsidian Black and Chestnut Tan leather used throughout the interior, and the seat backs and door inserts are trimmed with fabric inspired by the DBR1 seat material. Elsewhere, Aston Martin’s Q division has added bespoke Saddle Leather Helmet Pods in the rear compartment to hold special ‘DBS 59’ crash helmets, race suits and gloves, and a bespoke ‘DBS 59’ logo embroidered in the seat headrests.

Buyers will receive a two-piece luggage set which matches the interior, while an Aston Martin Racing Green car cover is also included featuring a white roundel with the car’s production number.

“When Aston Martin Cambridge expressed a desire to create a limited run of DBS Superleggeras inspired by the DBR1’s famous Le Mans victory we knew it had to be something special,” said Aston Martin Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer, Simon Sproule.

“The soft metallic hue of the Aston Martin Racing Green paintwork is classy and timelessly beautiful; the level of thought and detailing is exceptional. My favorite element on the ‘DBS 59’ are the seat backs that feature fabric inspired by the DBR1 seat material, but there are countless touches that will intrigue and delight”.

Like the standard DBS Superleggera, the DBS 59 is powered by a 5.2-liter V12 engine that produces 715 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. 0-62 mph takes 3.4 seconds before the car hits a top speed of 211 mph.

The Aston Martin DBS 59 will be available to order from the Aston Martin Cambridge dealership, which is currently taking orders. Only 24 examples are being produced, each representing one hour of the endurance race the DBR1 competed in nearly 50 years ago.

10 Craziest Drag Races Of The Month: July 2018 Edition

Tesla vs the Germans, many Mopars, and the slowest drag race in history.

We are living in a world where smartphones have made everyone a professional videographer. Hence why everytime one of the latest sports cars or supercars enters a drag race, someone is always there to record it. This month was filled with awesome internet race videos, but we've picked out 10 particularly entertaining ones for our list of 10 Craziest Drag Races of the Month: July 2018 Edition.

Lamborghini Huracan vs AMG GT R

This drag race seems like an easy conclusion, but victories are never guaranteed in real life. The 602 horsepower V10 Lamborghini Hurcan should easily defeat the 577 hp AMG GT R, but the Mercedes does have a 200-pound weight advantage, so it's anyone's race.

Volvo V5 vs All Comers

This V50 T5 is no ordinary Volvo, it is a 500 hp sleeper wagon. In this video, we see the V50 race against a 740 hp BMW M4 and a Porsche 991 Turbo S. It may not win, but it does show how far a good tuning job can take a car.

Audi Q5 vs Q5 vs SQ5

It is always interesting to see how much faster one model of a car is against another. This race pits a standard Audi Q5 2.0T against a Q5 TDI and an SQ5. It doesn't take three guesses to determine which Q5 is going to win.

Audi RS3 Sportback vs Lamborghini Aventador

We don't get the Audi RS3 Sportback in the US, but videos like this make us wish we did. The 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder can be tuned to produce huge power figures, enough to challenge an Aventador. After defeating a few Mercedes AMG and BMW Alpina cars, the RS3 turns its sights on the Lamborghini.

Volkswagen Golf With RS3 Engine

This video doesn't feature a head-to-head drag race, but it does show an Mk7 Volkswagen Golf with the five-cylinder engine out of an Audi RS3. The car has been upgraded with a TTE625 turbocharger and now produces 600 hp. We seriously wish VW would build a Golf R with the RS3's five-cylinder engine.

BMW M5 vs Seat Arosa Diesel

This sounds like one of the most obvious drag races on this list. How could a diesel Seat possibly beat a brand-new, 600 hp BMW M5? This race turns out to be a one-sided affair, but not in the way you might expect.

Dodge Demon vs Lamborghini Huracan

In the first of several videos featuring a Demon or Hellcat racing something else, the Demon embarrasses itself by running out of fuel mid-race. Dodge does brag about how quickly its products can drink gasoline in its own press releases, so this result doesn't really surprise us.

Dodge Hellcats vs Everything Else

In a video showing a bunch of Hellcats drag racing, there are bound to be some victories. However, there are also bound to be some crippling defeats. Running out of gas may be embarrassing, but nothing is worse than going up in smoke halfway down the drag strip.

Dodge Hellcat vs Audi R8 (In The City)

Driving on a race track is very different than driving in the real world. Real roads have bumps, potholes, rain, police, and all sorts of obstacles. The Hellcat may be a very powerful car, but putting the power down on public roads can be difficult, which is why AWD cars like the Audi R8 have the advantage.

Ford Model T vs Model A

This is easily the slowest race on this list, but it may also be the most entertaining. At an annual cruise event, Route 66 was shut down to host a drag race between a Ford Model A and a Ford Model T. The race may have been quicker if they had done it on foot.

Aston Martin Vanquish S Red Arrows Edition Honors Acrobatic Airplanes

Nothing like jet fighter inspiration.

Aston Martin is certainly no stranger to building special editions of its existing lineup, so it comes as no surprise there’s another new one today. This time the focus is on the Vanquish S. Introducing the Vanquish S Red Arrows edition, limited to just 10 examples and commissioned by Aston Martin Cambridge. For anyone who’s not English, the Red Arrows are the Royal Air Force’s highly regarded aerobatic unit, founded in 1965.

It’s made up of nine pilots who perform insane sky maneuvers, kind of like the English equivelant of the US Air Force Thunderbirds or the Navy’s Blue Angels. The Red Arrows also do their thing at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed and various other state occasions. As for the Vanquish S Red Arrow itself, Aston Martin says it’s finished in Eclat Red (‘Eclat’ is the Red Arrows’ motto), the same livery used for the Hawk jet planes. Numerous other touches, such as white and blue carbon livery detailing and a white ‘smoke trail’ on the side strake adorn the exterior. We particularly dig the exposed carbon fiber roof panel featuring an inlaid ‘charge’ pattern that mimics a fighter jet canopy. And, of course, there are Union Jack enamel wing badges.

The exterior is rounded off with a titanium exhaust. Step inside and there are Pinewood green inserts that evoke the design of a classic flight suit and – this is cool – Martin Baker ejection seat fabric. There’s even green webbing seatbelts and a One-77 derived steering wheel with center rotary toggle switch inspired by aviation instrumentation. The seats backs are embroidered with the Red Arrows emblem in classic diamond formation. Each Vanquish S will be signed, 1 through 10, by the equivalent number Red pilot in the squadron. The tenth car is being donated to charity. Power, of course, comes from the naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12. This is the third Q by Aston Martin special edition, and we doubt it’ll be the last.

Aston Martin Creating 19 Pairs Of Special Edition Zagatos For $8 Million

The track-only DB4-based continuation car and road-legal DBS GT Zagato won't be sold separately.

For nearly 60 years, Aston Martin and Zagato have collaborated to create some breathtakingly beautiful cars; from the classic DB4 GT Zagato to the stunning Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake, with the latter representing the two company’s most recent collaboration.

To celebrate Zagato’s centenary next year, Aston Martin is once again collaborating with the Italian coachbuilder to produce a track-only DB4 GT Zagato Continuation car and a new road-legal DBS GT Zagato. Both cars form what Aston Martin is dubbing the DBZ Centenary Collection, which is limited to 19 pairs. That's right, these cars won’t be sold separately, buyers will have to take them as a pair for an eye-watering $7.8 million.

The DB4 GT Zagato will be built at Aston Martin Works, Newport Pagnell, which is where the DB4 was originally built, while the new DBS GT Zagato will be produced at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, UK.

Originally built in the 1960s, the DB4 GT Zagato was a thoroughbred track car designed to rival Ferrari on the racetrack. Only 19 were built, hence why the Continuation model will have the same production run. Like the original, the Continuation car will be fitted with thin-gauge aluminium body panels and a lightweight tubular frame. State-of-the-art digital scanning technology will improve the accuracy and consistency of the panels before they are hand-finished. Under the hood is a Tadek Marek-designed straight-six engine sending 380 hp to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.

As for the DBS GT Zagato, Aston Martin says the new model will be based on the DBS Superleggera and will “embody the next evolution in Aston Martin Zagato design language,” as shown in a provided sketch design. It will feature a new interpretation of the iconic double-bubble roof, a striking front grille and a truncated tail to create an “amplified physique and an unmistakable presence.”

“The partnership between Aston Martin and Zagato is one of the most fruitful and enduring in the automotive world,” Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer said. “With Zagato celebrating its centenary next year, what better way to celebrate this landmark – and the long-standing bond between our two great companies – than creating these 19 pairs of cars. As an engineer I would always say my favourite Aston Martin is the next one, but I have to say I’m struggling to think of a finer two-car garage than this!”

Customer deliveries for the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation start in Q4 2019, while DBS GT Zagato customer deliveries will start a year later in Q4 2020.

10 Craziest Tuning Jobs Of The Month: June 2018 Edition

A half-mile record, one-of-a-kind Ford GT, and some crazy wagons.

Each month, we receive countless emails outlining the latest tuning packages for the trending sports car or SUV of the moment. Some of these creations are pretty incredible, while others are yawn-inducing displays of drudgery. We wanted to celebrate the coolest tuners out there, and have created a list of the ten best tuning jobs for the month of June, 2018. This month, a record was set in the half-mile, a Ford GT was modified for a unique owner, and some some SUVs and wagons were made a whole lot cooler.

Lamborghini Huracan by Underground Racing

The stock Lamborghini Huracan is a blisteringly fast car, but Underground Racing clearly wasn't satisfied with blistering speed. The company added one of its twin-turbo kits, enabling the Huracan to hit 259.67 mph in the half-mile, setting a new record in the process. It won't be too long before we see a Huracan break the 260-mph barrier.

Ford GT With Unique Upgrades

Not every tuning job is about speed and power, which is why this Ford GT is so unique. This supercar was built for former racing driver Jason Watt, who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. The GT has been modified with hand controls, new seats, and a Heffner performance cat-back exhaust. Watt recently took it out for a spin on the Nurburgring, probably the first time a car has ever lapped the Nordschleife with a wheelchair strapped to the roof.

Porsche 911 Turbo (GTSport1) by Techart

Techart is one of the best known Porsche tuners out there, so who better to give the 991.2 generation 911 Turbo a final send-off? Dubbed the GTSport 1 of 30, Techart has upped the Turbo's output from 580 to 640 horsepower. Of course, Techart has also given the 911 a unique look and, as the name suggests, only 30 examples will be built.

Mercedes-AMG GT S by Fostla.de

Sports cars like the AMG GT S already attract a lot of attention on the road, but for around $32,000, a company called Fostla.de will make you car look even cooler. The AMG GT S was given new aero pieces, and an increase of 103 hp. Interestingly, AMG's bespoke sports car produces less power from the factory than other AMG-tuned Mercedes models, but the Fostla.de car now produces a whopping 613 hp.

Audi RS3 by ABT

Sedans may be dying off in favor of crossovers, but that hasn't stopped ABT from getting its hands on the RS3 sedan. The RS3's 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo engine already pumps out 400 hp, but ABT managed to extract an extra 100 hp for a total of 500 hp.

Maserati Ghibli by Novitec

In terms of performance, the 430-hp Maserati Ghibli was always behind its competitors from Germany. Since Maserati itself isn't offering any more power, Novitec stepped in to improve the entire Ghibli range. Novitec's N-Tronic auxiliary control unit brings the 350-hp Ghibli up to 412 hp, and the 430-hp car up to 494 hp.

Mercedes-AMG E63 S by RENNtech

The sedan helped kill off the wagon, and now the SUV is killing off the sedan. Seems almost poetic, doesn't it? Don't worry, because famous Mercedes tuner RENNtech hasn't given up on sedans or wagons. RENNtech has turned its sights on the E63 S, which already pumps out 603 hp from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. With all of RENNtech's available options, the V8 can churn out as much as 843 hp.

BMW M3 Wagon Conversion

Mercedes recently released one of the most insane wagon models we have ever seen, but BMW still refuses to build a wagon version of the M3. Fortunately, an ambitious owner decided to take apart a diesel-powered 3 Series touring, and equip it with the heart and bodywork of an M3. The resulting wagon is even faster than a stock M3, thanks to a stage two tuning kit extracting 530 hp from the twin-turbo inline-six.

BMW X3 by Dahler

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone familiar with the auto industry right now, but the next two tunes on this list are fitted to SUVs. We malign SUVs for being boring, but tuners are working hard to change our opinion. The BMW X3 M40i is already quite potent with 355 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque, but D?hler Design & Technik GmbH now offers a Competition Line Package that pumps that up to 414 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque.
