Aston Martin Wants More Lagondas To Battle Bentley And Rolls-Royce

"We're looking for something that breaks the status quo."

Aston Martin means business these days. Aside from the recent launch of the all-new DB11 and the upcoming next generation Vantage and Vanquish, the UK carmaker is also teaming up with Red Bull to build a mid-engined Ferrari 488 GTB fighter. Oh, and there’s a little something called the Valkyrie on the way. In addition, Car and Driver has learned that AM wants to bring back yet another nameplate from its long history, Lagonda. CEO Andy Palmer told C/D that, thanks to a return to profitability, there are now two new Lagonda sedans in the pipeline.

The goal is to launch them together in 2023. Their targets? Those Bentley and Rolls-Royce sedans that have proven to be highly profitable for parent companies Volkswagen and BMW, respectively. “The truth is, I don’t want either of them to be what you’d call a traditional sedan,” Palmer told C/D. “If we just do another three-box sedan, it’s going to be hard to break into that market. So what I’m challenging the design guys to do is look for something that breaks that duopoly (between Rolls-Royce and Bentley), but which still has appeal to what is a relatively conservative market and still very much a chauffeur-driven market.”

But one thing is for sure: neither will be SUVs, a separate project entirely, currently called the DBX, that AM is also busy developing right now. However, Palmer confirmed that both Lagondas will ride on the same large car platform that’ll underpin the DBX. Aston Martin only very recently offered the very limited production Lagonda Taraf, which was based on the Rapide. This time it seems like Aston Martin isn’t going for limited numbers, something it can’t do if it’s serious about making a dent in Bentley and Rolls-Royce sales. "We're looking for something that breaks the status quo," Palmer summarized.

VW Group's EX-Engineering Chief Wants Out Of A German Prison

After 8 months in the slammer, he's really sorry for Dieselgate.

Very few of those involved with the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal have gone to prison, but former VW Group executive Wolfgang Hatz is one of them. For the past eight months, Hatz has been incarcerated in Germany over his alleged involvement in the emissions scandal. According to Automotive News Europe, he’s now appealing to Germany’s highest court in order secure his freedom. He has not been convicted of a crime. Hatz was VW Group’s powertrain chief from 2011 until the scandal broke in 2015.

Before that he served as Audi’s head engine developer from 2001 to 2007. He also spent time at Porsche as R&D boss. Prior to joining the VW Group in 2001, Hatz worked for BMW and Opel. But it was under his watch when the defeat devices were developed and incorporated into the diesel engines, such as the 3.0-liter V6 diesel used by Audi. Audi admitted in late 2015 that this specific engine had the device. Hatz’s lawyers are trying to get him out of prison by offering to surrender his passport and a bail post worth millions of Euros. Munich-based prosecutors have declined the request, hence the appeal to the top court.

What also doesn’t bode well for Hatz is that he was a close associate and friend of former VW CEO Martin Winterkorn, who was recently charged in the US with conspiracy and fraud regarding Dieselgate. The US is currently trying to have him extradited from Germany. The German constitution, however, is preventing that from happening. As for Hatz, he’s still stuck in the slammer until the court says otherwise.

Audi Wants To Double Range Of Hardcore RS Models

Hopefully some of these models will make it to the US.

The Audi Sport division has confirmed that it wants to double the number of available RS models from seven to 14. Division boss, and former Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar that “There is more to come,” and that “We have one company, one name and we have a brand. But we will remain exclusive.” As of right now, Audi's RS lineup is limited to the RS3, RSQ3, TT RS Coupe and Convertible, RS6, RS7 and R8. Within the next 18 months, Audi wants to expand this lineup to include more models.

The brand didn't say which models will get the RS treatment. We would assume that an RS4 and RS5 will come along to challenge the BMW M3 and M4, and a RSQ5 could compete against the rumored X3M. Audi is being mum with its plans, saying that it doesn't want to be like AMG. Winkelmann said “We are not going to do what they do. We have a lot of plans but are not revealing them yet. It is better to under-promise and over-deliver.” AMG has been hard at work giving almost every Mercedes model a hardcore variant and coming out with standalone models like the AMG GT. Audi currently builds the R8, but is noncommittal about adding more standalone models.

We don't think that Audi needs to match AMG, but it does need more RS models. In the US especially, Audi's RS models can't compete with M and AMG models. BMW currently offers the M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, X5M and X6M. Mercedes currently offers AMG versions of the C-Class, CLA-Class, E-Class, CLS-Class, S-Class, GLE-Class, GLS-Class, and G-Class. In the US, Audi only currently offers the RS7, and the upcoming RS3 and TT RS, so there's plenty of room for expansion.

Mercedes Wants To Squeeze Over 400 Horsepower From The Next AMG A45

That is a ton of horsepower for a 2.0 liter.

The Mercedes A45 has been the most powerful hot hatchback in the world since it was revealed back in 2013. When first introduced, the car's 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine produced 355 horsepower. The A45 was never sold in the US, but the sedan and SUV versions called the CLA and GLA were designed with the US in mind. In 2015, AMG gave all of these cars a power bump to 375 hp. Auto Express sat down with AMG boss Tobias Moers who has revealed that the next-generation A45 could make well over 400 hp.

Moers said that he has given his engineers a “blank piece of paper” to develop an all-new engine because the current engine is at its limit. He explained that "the limiting factor is the heat management in the cylinder head, so we’re not moving forward with that engine any more.” When asked if this new engine would produce over 400 hp, Moers said "Yes, I think so." AMG has likely been given a lot of freedom on this project because the current A45 has sold very well. Mercedes was unsure if a hatchback at this price class would sell well, but the average A45 transaction price for the car in the UK is 50,000 GBP ($61,500).

Giving the A45, CLA45, and GLA45 over 400 hp would be a great way to make them competitive against the current crop of cars in this segment. Volkswagen may have killed off plans for its badass 400 hp Golf, but the new RS3 will pack 400 hp from its 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine. The Ford Focus RS and Civic Type R will be interesting competition as well, but the Mercedes will have those cars beat on everything except price. Moers was also asked if there would be a model between the base 250 models and the 45 AMG models much like the recent 43 AMG models. He only replied with a "maybe," but we think that a mid-tier model would stack up perfectly against the Audi S3 and BMW M240i.

Aston Martin CEO Wants To Double Production By 2025

We don't think anyone will complain.

Aston Martin is on a roll lately, thanks to the all-new DB11, Vantage, and DBS Superleggera. The DBX crossover is just around the corner and its all-electric, uber luxury reborn Lagonda brand is also on its way. According to Reuters, Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer wants to more than double production by 2025. “The rich are getting richer, they want more personalization,” Palmer told Reuters in Abu Dhabi on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. “On the other hand, the car industry is getting more and more commoditized because of technology,” he added.

Before the end of this year, the UK carmaker is expected to build a total of 6,400 cars, but Palmer plans to have that figure increased to 14,000 annually by 2025.

Fortunately, things are looking very good financially as well. Just last year did Aston Martin achieve profitability, the first time it did so since 2010, earning a pre-tax profit of $111 million. But what about the general slowdown in key global markets? Is Palmer at all concerned? No, and the numbers prove why: Sales are up 185 percent in the US, 133 percent in the Asia-Pacific region, and 11 percent in China. Speaking of which, Aston Martin does not appear to have any real sales concerns with China, like many other automakers are today for various reasons. “China was slow, but not for us,” Palmer said.

But without question the key to the carmaker’s hopeful sales goals is the DBX crossover, due to debut in late 2019. Palmer says he’s betting on current customers who also own an SUV to trade it in for a DBX. While some industry analysts are predicting a drop in global auto sales due to a number of factors, Aston Martin, according to Palmer, does not have to worry much. Its customers, as Palmer said, are only making more money and are anxious to spend it.

Audi Wants To Build A BMW 8 Series Rival

One German brand copying another German brand? Never heard of such a thing.

The upcoming revival of BMW’s 8 Series coupe is, not surprisingly, spurring the competition to act. Speaking to Autocar, Audi design chief March Lichte is game for a direct 8 Series rival, but there’s a problem: a weak market for luxury coupes. “I love the shape of a two-door coupe, but it is also true that the (sales) volumes (for them) are much lower than four-doors. In the future, who knows? We have many ideas in this direction,” Lichte said when asked about the segment possibility.

Although Audi doesn’t seem to have anything in the pipeline at the moment, it will surely watch sales figures of the upcoming 8 Series closely as well as the new Polestar 1. Mercedes-Benz, of course, offers the S-Class coupe and AMG high-performance versions, all of which are selling well. Audi previewed its latest styling language in 2014 with the Prologue Concept, and both the new A8 sedan and A5 coupe designs were directly inspired by it. However, when the Prologue Concept was launched, Audi was thinking about offering a production version as sort of a sister coupe ship to the new A8, but ultimately passed on the idea. It was basically the A9 that never happened.

But that was a few years ago and the market is once again changing somewhat. A large coupe, especially if it’d be all-electric, would definitely be interesting. In the meantime, Audi is focused on upcoming launches of the next-generation A6, followed by the Q8 crossover and the new A1 and Q3. This will be completed by the end of 2019, but after that things remain up in the air. A heavily re-skinned Porsche Mission E, perhaps?

Here's How The Audi RS Q5 Wants To Crush The BMW X3 M

It's all about the engine.

High-performance luxury SUVs are big business for Audi and BMW, so of course there’s an entertaining battle between the two for the ultimate uber-tastic models. Last September at Paris, Audi unveiled its all-new Q5 and SQ5, but what we’re particularly anxious for is the arrival of the RS Q5. That will likely happen this September at Frankfurt, but today Auto Express has learned which engine Audi has chosen to power this thing: the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 straight from the RS5 Coupe. Power will be routed to all four wheels, which is a given.

Exact power and performance figures aren’t available yet, but expect roughly the same 444 hp as the RS5. However, because the RS Q5 will be heavier than the RS5 (SUV vs. coupe), performance times will take a slight hit. Still, a 0-62 mph time of less than five seconds seems doable, while top speed will once again be electronically limited to 155 mph. Notable exterior differences from the Q5 and SQ5 will include the familiar RS upgrades, such as sculpted air intakes, LED headlights, and larger wheels with low profile tires. The interior will be covered in premium leather and lots of carbon fiber trim, as well as RS badging galore.

Pricing will likely start at around $65,000, given that the current SQ5 begins at $54,000. Along with the also upcoming first ever BMW X3 M, other rivals will include the Porsche Macan Turbo and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43. More details should arrive in the coming weeks.
