Condition
The customer may report that personalized memory settings (for example, electric exterior mirror, seat memory, radio, air conditioning, electric
steering wheel, etc.) are inoperative or incorrectly assigned when using the remote key.
Technical Background
The memory settings for each key are stored in the individual control unit (depending on the function) and not in the key itself.
Only the identification of the currently used remote key is transmitted on the CAN bus. Each participating control unit sets its own adjustments.

To rule out the key as the root cause, check whether the remote key is correctly identified by the vehicle.
Tip: Only keys on positions 1 to 4 are included in the personalized memory settings functions. Keys from position 5 cannot be personalized.

Technical Background
Comparing Measure Value Block 103 with 106 is not an accurate method to diagnose low-side fuel pressure sensor G410.
In order to diagnose G410 accurately, use a mechanical gauge and compare results with the low-side fuel pressure Actual Value in the applicable
Measured Value Block (varies by engine).
Production Solution

Service
1. Verify the customer did not run out of fuel at the time the DTCs were stored.
Tip:
P310B and/or P129E / P008A may be accompanied by P1250. If so, it is likely the faults occurred due to a low fuel level and not a malfunction of
the G410 Pressure Sensor.
2. Follow indication of GFF for applicable DTCs.

3. To check the low-side fuel pressure sensor G410, measure the fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge using the following method:
a. Start engine and allow to idle for at least one minute.
b. Stop the engine.
c. Keep the ignition on.
d. Measure actual low-side fuel pressure via mechanical gauge (VAG 1318) on the low pressure supply line in the engine compartment (Figure 1).

  1. Add 1 bar to the value obtained from the mechanical gauge to calculate the adjusted gauge measurement value.

  2. Compare the adjusted gauge measurement value to the Actual Value stored in the applicable low pressure MVB.


Tip:
In some cases, the MVB actual value is shown in hPa instead of bar. For comparison, 1 bar = 1000 hPa; (5000 hPa = 5 bar).
6. If the MVB value deviates more than ?.0 bar from the adjusted gauge measurement value, then the DTC was likely triggered by a faulty G410
low-side fuel pressure sensor. In this case, document the adjusted gauge measurement value and MVB value on the Repair Order and perform the
Sensor replacement procedure below.

  1. Replace the G410 low-side fuel pressure sensor.

  2. Clear DTCs and verify that the problem was eliminated.

  3. If applicable, run Basic Settings to adapt low-side pressure system.

  4. Do not replace the high pressure fuel pump, electrical fuel pump, fuel pump control module or fuel filter unless problem persists and further


diagnosis indicates a malfunction of any of these components.

Affected Vehicles
Condition
Customer states oil consumption is higher than the Audi oil consumption standard of up to 1 quart per 1,200 miles, or 1 liter per 2000 km.
Technical Background
In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of
engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically engines with specified
break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. Refer to the Owners
Manual for specific break-in procedures.
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, the
ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation
level of the oil.

  1. Before testing or attempting repair, explain the Technical Background to the customer.

  2. If the vehicle is within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, you must obtain authorization from the Audi Technical Assistance Center before

Oil Consumption Test, Part 1
1. Perform the test plan in the VAS5051 tester before making any repairs. Select Function/Component Selection: Powertrain >> Engine >> Engine
lubrication >> Partial systems >> Oil consumption measurements.
  1. Follow VAS5051 test protocol exactly. Document all information on oil measurement sheets.

  2. Archive the VAS5051 diagnostic log and oil measurement test sheets in the vehicle service file.

  3. Advise the customer that if the low oil level warning light comes on before the 630 mile (1,000 km) test is finished, the vehicle must be taken


directly to the dealership for Part 2 of the oil consumption test, regardless of the miles accumulated. The customer should not add any oil.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
Contacts may be widened (over 0.63 mm) by using incorrect pins or incorrect methods for current flow tests. Either action may cause intermittent
electrical connections. This may cause sporadic DTCs to be stored in various control modules.

1. Check the contacts on the control module and connector.
a. Verify that all pins and terminals are securely clipped into the connectors.
b. Verify that no pins are bent or deformed.
c. Verify proper crimping as described and illustrated in Figure 1.
^ Pin/terminal must be crimped onto the wire (Figure 1, A).
^ Pin/terminal must be crimped onto the wire sheathing (Figure 1, B).
2. Mechanically check the contacts on the control module and connector.
Test the individual terminals by using the standard 0.63 mm male pin (see Figure 1 and Parts Table) to verify proper contact. Make sure that the
test pin is not twisted and is inserted correctly into the female terminal. The contact must be tight, but it must still allow the pin to slide into the
terminal of the control module connector.
Only use the 0.63 mm male pins because the female terminals are designed for these pins, which are the only terminals found in the connectors for
the above-mentioned control modules.
3. If the pin/terminal is deformed, improperly crimped or does not contact correctly, the contact must be replaced with the VAS 1978A repair kit or
ordered in sets.

Technical Background
The following conditions can lead to clutch damage:
^ Incorrect shifting.
^ At a high vehicle speed, the clutch is pressed and an incorrect lower gear is selected. The gearbox drives the clutch plate past its designed RPM
range (over speed condition) and centrifugal force damages the clutch. If the clutch was engaged during this incorrect gear engagement, damage
would also occur to the engine.
^ The revolutions of clutch plate and engine input shaft differ too much.
^ Excessive slipping of the clutch.
This leads to the overheating of the clutch plate and removal of the lining.

Technical Background
Parts of the interior fittings such as door covers, rear shelf, facings or covers can be made to vibrate at certain frequencies and then cause noises. It is
possible that loudspeaker brackets, cables or covers can be made to vibrate.

1. Verify if interferences come from loose objects (such as keys, CD covers, pens, sunglasses, etc.) in the vehicle. If the interference is not coming
from loose objects, proceed to 2.
2. Verify if interferences disappear when the trim surrounding the speaker is pushed against the speaker or the speaker against its mounting. If the

interference does not disappear with pressure, proceed to 3.
3. Remove loudspeaker from its mounting and listen to the loudspeaker outside of vehicle. If the sound from the speaker does not exhibit the

4. Check if interferences come from parts of the cabin fittings. Loose parts should be fixed, an underlay applied, or, if necessary, replaced.

The customer may report that the illumination of the dash insert, the air conditioning control panel or the inside light flickers when briefly pressing
the accelerator in P or N or when shifting down while driving downhill.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
Only vehicles with PR number 8GH may be affected.
When high electricity consumers are switched off and the battery is fully charged, the energy generated by the alternator is sometimes too great for
the power system to absorb. This may lead to briefly increased voltage, and the lights mentioned above may briefly flicker.
This characteristic is caused by the alternator design and is a normal condition of the vehicle.

2. Update the power steering software using the SVM action code as listed in the table shown, if necessary. The tester may display a note stating
that update programming must be performed on two control modules. The updates should be installed in the order proposed by the tester.
Tip: If the software is below 2901 (for example, 2301 or 2501), update it to 2901 first. Use SVM code 8P44A001 (for A3) or 8J44A001 (for TT).
After updating to 2901, use the SVM chart below to update to the newest software, 3305.

  1. After the SVM update, adapt power steering control module, J500 (44), through Guided Fault Finding.

  2. Calibrate Steering Angle Sensor G85.

Technical Background
Fault in the wiper motor control unit is caused by installation of an unapproved aftermarket xenon headlamp system. These systems are not designed
for Audi vehicles.
These systems have been proven to cause damage to various electrical systems in our models by causing a voltage spike in networks that use a LIN
architecture, such as a LIN-based windshield wiper system.

Typically this condition is observed when, after replacing a windshield wiper motor, the replacement motor fails again after a short time.

  1. Inspect the vehicle for the presence of any aftermarket accessories, most notably a non-approved xenon headlamp system.

  2. Inform the customer that the windshield wiper motor has failed as a result of the installation of aftermarket xenon headlamps and is not covered


under warranty.
3. Restore the original headlamp system.

Vehicle Information
Condition
Central locking via remote control does not work either sporadically or permanently. The locks can still be operated manually.
Technical Background
^ Missing synchronization between the remote control key and vehicle because the battery has been disconnected or the battery of the remote
control has been replaced.
^ If other senders operate in the same frequency range (mobile phones, TV stations, wireless headphones, baby monitors, other vehicle remote
controls, etc.), the remote control key may have been temporarily switched off because a clear identification of the remote control key is not
possible. This is necessary to prevent an unintentional unlocking of the vehicle by other unrelated senders.

1. Perform the synchronization between each remote control key and the vehicle according to the following instructions.

a. Press one of the buttons of the remote control key.
b. Lock or unlock the vehicle once mechanically with the key.
c. Press one of the buttons of the remote control key again.
d. The complete process must not take longer than 30 seconds.
e. Up to and including model year 2009, if the synchronization procedure was not successful, adapt the remote control key(s) to the comfort
system central control module, J393 (46), using the VAS Scan Tool. Follow test plan J393-central control module for comfort system,
adapting remote control key(s). Sometimes following the "erase all memory positions first" test plan produces better results.
From model year 2010, if the synchronization procedure was not successful, adapt the remote control key(s) to the BCM2 vehicle electrical
system control unit, J519 (09), using the VAS Scan Tool. Follow test plan J519- Vehicle electrical system control module, adapting remote
control key(s). Sometimes following the "erase all memory positions first" test plan produces better results.
A4 (8K) 2009 - 2015, AS (8T) 2008 - 2015, AS Cabriolet (8F) 2010 - 2015, Audi Q5 (8R) 2009 - 2015, A8 (4H) 2011 - 2015, A6 and A7 (4G)
2012 - 2015:
a. Press a button on the remote key within the range of the vehicle.
b. If necessary open the vehicle with the emergency key on the door lock.
c. Switch the ignition on and off.
A6 (4F), A8 (4E), Audi Q7:
a. Open the vehicle mechanically with the key.
b. Insert the key into the ignition lock and switch on the ignition.
c. Switch the ignition off again.

  1. If the synchronization does not help, check the battery of the remote control. The battery voltage must be 3.0 V or above.

  2. If the battery voltage is below 3.0 V, replace the battery and perform the synchronization again.

  3. Check whether there are any interfering senders nearby.

  4. Check whether there are any interfering senders in the vehicle.

  5. If interference was responsible for the condition, explain the technical background to the customer.

  6. If the synchronization procedure was not successful, adapt the remote control key(s) to the comfort system central control module, J393 (46),


using the VAS Scan Tool. Follow test plan J393-central control module for comfort system, adapting remote control key via adaptation (channel

Audi Wants To Know If Audi Has Been Beaten At Its Own Game – Here's How It Can Change ThatReally Want An RS Avant

Wagon fans have reason to believe!
Audi’s RS family of fast family cars have always been popular with American consumers, albeit mostly as crossovers. However, there has always been a gaping hole in the hearts of enthusiasts who pine for the mythical RS wagons Audi offers to European customers. Well, following the reveal of the RS5 Sportback at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, Audi says it’s not ruling out the possibility of selling RS Avants in America.
“We always look at potential new opportunities in the market. It’s a niche to explore,” Filip Brabec, vice president of product management for Audi of America told MotorTrend. “We keep holding discussions. Keep writing us letters.” Nothing is imminent as the market for wagons in America, let alone hot-rod all-wheel-drive wagons, is The once AWD kings need to find its mojo again.

Before Audi became Audi as we know it today, it went by the name of Auto Union – an amalgamation of four German automakers that was founded in 1932. Along with Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union enjoyed huge success in motorsport – particularly in Grand Prix racing. It’s widely known that Mercedes’ racers were referred to as the Silver Arrows, but it was a title bestowed upon the silver Auto Union racers too – due to their joint dominance of the sport along with their Mercedes-Benz counterparts.
Building The Behemoth
Audi’s Rise to AWD Glory Fast forward to 1980, and Audi would once again dominate motorsport, albeit one of a different kind entirely. The Quattro was a turbocharged all-wheel drive machine, and it became one of the most dominant rally cars of all time – redefining the sport and introducing the world to the performance benefits of all-wheel drive, taking 22 wins between 1981 and 1984. It wasn’t without the help of some talented drivers though – including the likes of Walter Rohrl and Stig Blomqvist. The Quattro was of significant importance for Audi, as it would set the course for Audi’s road going cars for the next 4 decades.

Not only would the Quattro be homologated for road use, but all-wheel drive – touted as ‘quattro’ – would become a signature trait of not just Audi’s performance models, but even their everyday drivers; making them synonymous with being the perfect all-road, all-weather machines. Its performance cars took quattro to a new level – starting with the 1994 Audi RS2; the first RS model. The RS2 was a joint development between Audi and Porsche – combining signature elements for Audi such as the Avant station wagon body, all-wheel drive, and a turbocharged 5 cylinder engine.

Its 311 horsepower gave it immense performance, cracking the 0-62 mph sprint in 4.8 seconds on its way to a top speed electronically limited to 162.8 mph. Performance off the line was so immense, that it was tested running 0-30 mph quicker than a McLaren F1 could. The RS2 paved the way for the B5 RS4 Avant – it followed a similar recipe to the RS2, but with a twin-turbo V6 engine. More Audi RS models followed, including the first RS6, RS3, TT RS, and an RS5. At the core of every Audi RS model, the basic recipe was the same; one endearing engine – be it a turbo inline-5, V6, V8, or V10 – and all-wheel drive.

The highpoint of this formula, many will argue, occurred with the B7 RS4; powered by a 4.2-liter naturally aspirated FSI V8 with a 6-speed manual transmission, the 60:40 RWD torque split made it razor-sharp, while the flat-plane V8 sang a glorious tune that few could resist. While the current generation Audi RS3 may live up to similar standards of dominance – and of course soulfulness with the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder – Audi has largely fallen from grace.
Oh How The Mighty Fall
Where once it dominated motorsport, Audi is no longer pertinent in the world of rally, withdrawing completely from the World Endurance Championship it dominated for so long. Audi’s have now become sterile, inert things to drive – and innovations such as adaptive steering have been widely criticized for the lack of linearity, predictability, and overall ability to involve a driver as they should. Admittedly even the likes of BMW have lost the plot when it comes to steering feel – only Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio can really boast an involving steer – but it’s one of many issues plaguing Audis of late.

The biggest blow to Audi’s dominance and ego has come in the form of all-wheel drive. Audi, once kings of the AWD drivetrain, have now resorted to front-biased systems that place efficiency over efficacy in their regular model ranges. Since 2010, Audi has used the same ‘Generation V’ quattro in its performance models – albeit a system that pioneered the torque vectoring rear differential – but whilst Audi’s systems have stayed pretty much the same, the rest of the motoring world has developed newer, more innovative systems.

The likes of GKN Driveline have engineered rear-biased systems such as those found on Jaguar’s F-Type SVR, and they’ve engineered front-biased systems with unique rear clutch packs to provide active torque vectoring unlike anything seen on AWD before – systems we see in action in the new Buick Regal Sportback and Regal GS. More importantly, this same system has been utilized to give the Ford Focus RS a damn ‘drift mode’ by sending extra power to the outside rear tire. Audi? Well it uses Haldex drive in the RS3 and TT – just like always, with a maximum 50% rear bias and brake based torque vectoring.

But OK, that’s the realm of front-drive based hatchery – what about their full size sedans like the RS4 and RS6/7? Audi’s recent performance all-wheel drive systems have been quite advanced – the active sport differential provided genuine mechanical torque vectoring before it was cool, since its introduction in the S4 sedan of 2008. But you need only cast your eyes towards Munich or Stuttgart to see what BMW and Mercedes-AMG think of quattro – they’ve wiped it aside in one fell swoop, equipping the M5 and E63 with trick all-wheel drive systems that out-accelerate the Audi RS6/7 twins, and yet at the press of a button, they resort to their historically hooliganistic selves as rear-wheel drive only sports sedans.

All-wheel drive was once Audi territory; and they’d done a pretty spectacular job of it. Yet in the space of a single generation Mercedes-AMG and BMW M have come along to not only match it by copying the torque vectoring, but create systems that arguably best the latest performance iterations of quattro.
Fall Down Seven Times, Stand Up Eight
Audi can get back to the summit though. Just as it once revolutionized the world of performance, it can do so again – albeit with a slightly different train of thought. Audi must cast aside its aspirations of ‘easy speed’ at the expense of driver involvement and it needs to embrace the thrill of driving, the adrenaline rush that was once synonymous with the brand’s racing exploits. There’s a glimmer of hope for them with the Audi R8 RWS (Rear Wheel Series) – a sign that they’re trying to make their cars more exciting.

But if Audi are to succeed, it’ll need to make more than just an exciting halo car –it will also need to appeal to the man on the street. How then? As Audi did once before, it’ll need to link up with Porsche – but this time instead of launching a potent wagon, it needs to launch something sportier. At the expense of its own TT – sometimes casualties are necessary. Audi needs to engineer a mid-engined, rear wheel drive sports car to inject a dose of adrenaline into a dying performance brand. Porsche already has the 718 Cayman and Boxster, so Audi need only borrow the platform and drop its 2.0-liter TFSI motors into the mix; or better yet, the 2.5-liter 5-pot!

Style it like the Audi quattro concept from the 2010 Paris Motor Show, and sell it with a flashy name like the ‘R5’ or ‘Neu Quattro’ (Ur Quattro refers to the ‘Original Quattro’) and inject a bit of spice where the brand has frozen over. A rear-wheel driven Audi for the layman – who would’ve thought it possible? But its ‘daily’ models aren’t exempt from the overhaul. No, the all-wheel drive versions would need a newfangled system – likely one engineered by GKN rather than Haldex – and the Audi engineers would need to learn to have fun again. They’ve become sterile and inert.

But if Audi can pursue driver enjoyment first and foremost, imbued with its current ability to produce comfortable, superbly built premium vehicles, it’ll capitalize on the buyers that have been stranded by BMW’s recent departure from ‘sheer driving pleasure.' Audi has to reinvent themselves, not just with a mere makeover and a change of clothes, but with a change in lifestyle. It needs to cast aside the accountant-like demeanor and hit the gym, go mountain climbing and bike riding. It needs to become the motoring equivalent of the modern man – one as intelligent as he is physically capable. It’s simply not enough to be a one-trick pony anymore – Audi needs to become an apex predator.

Audi hears the cries of Avant aficionados in America, and certainly won’t rule out the possibility of one day potentially importing the Avants as weird RS flagships, but the company won’t commit to anything either. Once upon a time, from 2006 to 2008, Audi offered American's the B7 RS4 in sedan form, but decided to skip North America with the next generation B8 RS4, which was only offered as an Avant. For now, Audi Sport is quite focused on selling the RS5 Sportback, which the company views as the most expressive type of sedan that speaks to a totally different breed of buyer.
“The Sportback is not a weird hatchback,” Renz said. “It adds to a sedan, as a beautiful layer on top of that. It’s for sedan buyers who want to be a bit more expressive. The Sportback offers more image than the Avant. There is a clear hierarchy. The Sportback is for young families who are looking for a sporty, fashion-oriented car with functionality that they can put the kids in. The Avant customer is a little bit older, more entrepreneurial.” Regardless, you heard the man, start writing those letters sports fans.
