Life Begins After 60: Why The 0-60 MPH Sprint Isn't Everything

Some things matter more than acceleration.

How do you build up hype for a performance car? It’s as simple as a single figure for most – the time taken to make the sprint from 0-60 mph. The motoring society has become obsessed with how quickly the now standard sprint is accomplished, to such an extent that manufacturers now chase the measure with ever-increasing verve and dedication; and in the process, they’ve convinced us that nothing else matters.

The Art Of Acceleration

The ability to accelerate from standstill is an undoubtedly important measure – and there’s a lot of engineering that goes into it. It’s more than just sheer horsepower at work, as from standstill the limits of adhesion are easily broken by all the twisting force sent through either – or both – axles. Mechanically, there are ways to circumvent loss of grip – primarily through wider or stickier tires, or some combination of both. We undervalue just how much of an effect the quality and quantity of rubber has on the acceleration of a vehicle.

But two of Dodge’s most potent machines gives us a pretty decent idea of just how important rubber is. The 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat performs the sprint in 3.5 seconds on regular high performance tires measuring 275 mm in width. The Demon, the demonic big brother to the Hellcat, rated at 840 hp, performs the same sprint in just 2.3 seconds. Power has a part to play, but the real reason for the massive reduction in sprint time is the Nitto drag radials that give the Demon enough grip to launch harder and faster than any other production vehicle. There are other elements of physics to overcome, such as shifting weight. Under hard acceleration, as a vehicle lurches forwards, the weight remains behind until it’s dragged along.

A properly tuned rear suspension is key to achieving potent 0-60 mph times – an incorrectly tuned setup would see all the power and torque in the world dissolve into plumes of tire smoke. The launch itself is crucial – measuring throttle inputs versus grip levels, and in the case of modern turbocharged engines, managing boost. It’s a tricky process, managing all those manually – not forgetting the clutch on a manual car – which is why in the pursuit of every possible tenth of a second, manufacturers have developed launch control systems with computers that think and react far quicker than you or I could possibly hope to.

In boosted motors, these systems even pre-load the turbochargers for maximum power and immediate response. The technicality involved with engineering a 0-60 mph sprint is incredible, and credit where it’s due, manufacturers have performed incredible work to reduce these times. But modern vehicles without launch control are somewhat flaccid creatures.

The Flaw with Launch Control

Modern vehicles have come to rely on launch control completely. Without it, they’re incapable of boosting enough and locking their clutch packs to achieve maximum forward thrust. The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 might be capable of a rapid 4.1 second 0-60 mph sprint when Race Launch is activated, but stumbles past the mark more than a second slower without it. To protect the turbochargers, outside of a launch scenario the engine doesn’t rev to a point where boost is built. So without launch control, that magical 0-60 sprint is completely unattainable.

Many a modern launch-control equipped machine suffers the same fate of limp performance as the CLA 45. It’s for this reason why Ford engineered the Focus RS to be able to launch consistently without a launch control mode – without the fuss of pulling and prodding buttons and paddles in a complicated sequence just to access the quickest possible 0-60 mph time. Ford realized that they may be incrementally slower at times, but they also realized something far more important.

There’s More To Life Than 0-60 MPH

The measure of a car’s greatness is in more than how rapidly it covers the 0-60 mph sprint. Though cars may be but mere machines – built of glass and metal and powered by the combustion of fuel a million years in the making – they’re also much more than that. Cars have a soul – or at least the great ones do – and they’re capable of bringing joy in more ways than just standstill acceleration. Some of the most special cars of all time have been those that were bested in the 0-60 mph stakes by others.

And yet they brought joy in ways beyond acceleration – through their ability to corner, and more so, their ability to communicate, to talk to the driver, to breathe with the road, to combine driver and machine in one harmonious execution of modern driving enjoyment. Though an all-conquering 0-60 mph time might be one – and only one of many – of the ultimate tests of engineering prowess, it can’t live up to the joy of driving – and that’s something that can’t be measured in seconds, or horsepower, or G-forces, or any other arbitrary metric. You can’t quantify pleasure – and that’s precisely why manufacturers choose to market 0-60 times rather than cars that thrill.

Many of the cars that place priority on the 0-60 mph sprint sacrifice the all-important joy of driving for computer systems that manage and control every facet of the drive to achieve astounding figures. We’ve seen it time and time again that slower accelerating cars are often far more exciting than their rivals who place focus on the sprint. The BMW M2 and Subaru WRX STI are just two examples of vehicles that forego split seconds on the sprint, but reward you with seconds sheared off on the racetrack and a greater ratio of smiles-per-mile than inert counterparts such as the Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45.

Hyundai of late have begun to prioritize driving joy. Head of BMW’s N Division, Dr. Albert Biermann, has gone on record to say the Hyundai i30 N, and in turn the Veloster N hot hatches, prioritize BPM over RPM – attempting to raise your heartrate through exciting dynamics rather than outright pace and quantifiable numbers.

Life After 60

It’s understandable why marketing agencies for manufacturers place such a high priority on 0-60 mph times – it’s an easy way of one-upping the competition. Manufacturers know this too, and in the constant battle to be better they pursue these figures with verve. In a world where lawyers sue over adverts that purportedly encourage reckless driving, it’s difficult to market driving pleasure. But that’s where it’s up to us as enthusiasts to share the joy – to inform people that beyond the 60 mph mark, there’s fun too, and sometimes, in the right circumstances, you’ll find that life really does begin at 60.

Racing Driver Tased After Intense Fight Breaks Out On Track Following Crash

Engines aren’t the only things stressed during a race. The intense pressure on a driver and their team as well as a yearning to be the first past the finish line when the checkered flag is waving can cause emotions to run high. In some cases, the tension gets so high it spurs a fight. Like a fire on the race track, those get contained pretty quickly but in some cases, they become so dramatic that extreme measures are required. That’s the scene that took place at Anderson Speedway when two stock car racers got into a fight after colliding with each other on the track.

After big retaliatory hit is delivered, driver Jeffrey Swinford plows his car into opponent Shawn Cullen’s car and ends up on his hood.

Angry, Cullen gets out of his car and proceeds to deck Swinford, who is still sitting in his car, in the face. With the trackside helpers unable (or unwilling) to stop the fight, a police officer gets onto the race track and proceeds to use a taser on Cullen, which brings him to the floor pretty quickly. According to Indianapolis news source WISH, both drivers were taken away in handcuffs. Swinford was charged with a Class A misdemeanor for criminal recklessness and Cullen got a charge for disorderly conduct. Of the two, Swinford was banned from the track indefinitely. Out of the many forms of racing, Figure 8 is one of the more entertaining. Seems these two thought they could find a way to improve on it. Good job for making that happen.

Audi TT RS Preserves Its Epic Exhaust Note After Getting Shrunken Engine

This is the cheapest way to satisfy a need for speed and European car fetish in one go.

When looking at modern cars, it was the 1.4-liter turbocharged Fiat 500 Abarth that came out and taught the world that small displacement four-bangers could sound like eight-cylinder Ferraris. This was fantastic news because turbochargers and downsized engines were starting to become the norm, and now it was known that the change would not have to come at the expense of a rich exhaust note. Furthering the credibility of a small engine opera is the Audi TT RS, which shares a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with the new RS3 sedan.

It makes the same 400 horsepower as the sedan and best of all, shouts a fantastic song despite not being a burly Pavarotti-sized motor. It’s secret? Well, let’s start with the fact that its 2.5-liters are spread out over five pots, each with 0.5-liters of space. This makes the engine odd, literally and figuratively.

With four, six, or eight cylinder vehicles, there is at least one cylinder that can help cancel out the explosive motion of the adjacent pistons, but that isn’t the case with an inline-five engine. The result is that the Audi TT RS maintains a raspy metallic exhaust note with a computer controlled snaps and crackles delivered with every upshift or downshift. Once transitioning from country road back into city, a simple removal of lead from shoe keeps things hushed, making the TT a perfect companion for the daily driver who needs their weekend thrills and doesn’t mind that the TT isn’t as cool as a Porsche 911.

2019 Aston Martin Vantage Seized After Driver Clocked 100 MPH In A School Zone

The dumb driver could face a fine of up to $10,000 after flooring it in a new Aston Martin Vantage on the streets of Vancouver.

After being revealed last year, customer deliveries of the Aston Martin Vantage have started hitting the road. The V8-powered supercar has 503 horses under the hood and a top speed of 195 mph but trying to unleash its potential on a public road is never a good idea. This guy found out the hard way. They clearly didn't show much restraint, because the local police clocked the 31-year old male driving the Vantage at 98 mph on the streets of Vancouver, Canada. If that wasn’t already bad enough, they hit this speed in a 25-mph school zone.

The only consolation is that it happened on a Sunday at 8 pm when the school obviously would have been closed, but it still doesn’t excuse driving nearly four times over the speed limit in a school zone and thinking you can get away with it. That’s just idiocy on another level.

The 31-year-old driver was charged with stunt driving, dangerous driving, and speeding. To set an example and discourage other enthusiasts from committing similar speeding offences, the supercar was also impounded. A photo released by police on social media shows the sorry-looking bright yellow Vantage being loaded onto the back of a truck.

As well as having your car impounded for seven days, anyone issued a stunt driving ticket in the province of Ontario has their license suspended for a week. If convicted of stunt driving, this Aston Martin driver could be fined between $2,000 and $10,000, have their license suspended for up to two years, and even spend up to six years in jail, according to CBC.

Aston Martin Killing Off Rapide After Porsche And Mercedes Launch Competitors

Speaking with Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer, the Australian auto site heard that the four-door Rapide will be getting the axe. Well, at least its fossil fuel-powered versions will. Instead of a signature V12 engine under the hood emitting a glorious exhaust note, an electric drivetrain will take its place. Dubbed the RapidE, this new four-door Aston Martin will come in 2018 and stand as a symbol of what’s to come from the automaker as it strives to lower its emissions and follow the rest of the industry to electrification. “So obviously there’s a platform for the electric Rapide, so it has life in front of it, but the Rapide as you see it today is also going to be replaced by the DBX on one hand and the Lagonda on the other,” said Palmer.

By making this move, it appears that Palmer and his company will be expanding the lineup to satisfy more customers. The DBX will offer an alternative to the new class of attractive and luxurious SUVs that have been coming from Bentley, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and soon, Lamborghini. As for the Lagonda, we previously heard that Aston Martin would be reviving the badge as a sort of ultra luxury marquee that could compete with Bentley and Rolls-Royce super sedans. In our minds this leaves one massive gap in the segment, namely, the four-door sports car that the Rapide once was, the only car in Aston Martin’s lineup that could compete with the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-AMG GT 4.

Two pieces of hope we can cling to are the RapidE’s performance, which could top out around 800 horsepower, as well as the fact that Palmer made sure to mention that the name Rapide was originally a Lagonda nameplate, implying that one of the upcoming Lagonda-badged models could be the four-door sports car we so crave. Guinness retires Joe Girard's car-sales record after dispute

Joe Girard sold 1,425 vehicles in 1973. Ali Reda says he sold 1,582 last year.

But Girard will not lose his title as the world's best car salesman, because Guinness World Records has decided to retire the category rather than settle what has turned into an ugly dispute between Girard, now 89, and Reda, 45. Meanwhile, Girard has sued Reda, claiming the challenge to his record has hurt his reputation as well as his income from book sales and speaking appearances.

"Still to this day ... no one has been able to prove [Reda's] record or what he did to even get that record," Girard's wife, Kitty, told Automotive News last week.

General Motors backed Reda's figures, but Guinness says there's no longer a way to sufficiently verify the figures, as it did when Girard earned his spot in automotive retailing history. Thus, Girard will be considered a "historic record holder," a Guinness spokeswoman wrote in an email to Automotive News.

The organization requires a "clear and independent analysis of the competition," either through "market research or from a global institution who monitors sales in the industry in order to confirm a record holder in this category," the spokeswoman wrote. "Following extensive research, it appears that no such institution exists and market research would be deemed insufficient according to our guidelines."

Reda, a salesman at Les Stanford Chevrolet and Les Stanford Cadillac in Dearborn, Mich., said he found a third-party auditor and planned to pay for his numbers to be verified.

”I sent Guinness an email saying this is going to be costly. Before I move forward with this, I just need to make sure that you are going to accept this as proof," Reda said. "And then they sent me back that: They decided to remove the category."

That decision surprised Reda, as did the lawsuit from Girard.

“Why would you even think about suing someone for beating your record?” Reda asked. “How does that even make sense? I'm going through it and I don't understand it.”

Girard, who worked for another Detroit-area GM dealership, Merollis Chevrolet, claims he had "reduced bookings" because of the publicity given to Reda, whom he accuses of "chasing the economic benefit" that comes with the Guinness record, according to the Detroit Free Press, which obtained the filing and reported Guinness' decision to back out of the matter last week. Girard also says he has "suffered emotional harm" as a result of "ignorant emails" sent to him, the Free Press reported.

"I really can't believe I'm going through this," Reda told the Free Press. "I had a completely different image of what this would look like. It's a shame Joe just couldn't accept, congratulate and embrace all of this."

Trump vows to scrap NAFTA, threatens Canada after reaching deal with Mexico

WASHINGTON -- U.S. officials reached a “preliminary agreement” with Mexico on a framework to rebalance manufacturing in North America after resolving key differences related to the cross-border movement of finished vehicles and auto parts.

The tentative deal, if finalized, would increase the regional content value of passenger cars, light trucks and auto parts required to qualify for duty-free status, create a labor content value rule and tighten enforcement of rules of origin, according to the U.S. Trade Representative's Office.

President Donald Trump, announcing the deal at the White House on Monday, said he would terminate NAFTA and send the tentative bilateral deal with Mexico to Congress for approval, adding that Canada might be incorporated or get a separate bilateral deal. In the absence of a Canadian agreement, Trump threatened to slap tariffs on the country's auto exports.

“We’re going to call it the United States/Mexico Trade Agreement,” he said. NAFTA “has a bad connotation because the United States was hurt very badly by NAFTA for many years.”

A senior U.S. trade official told Reuters talks with Canada were expected to begin immediately in the hopes of reaching a final agreement by Friday.

Auto provisions

The Trump administration's deal with Mexico would require that 75 percent of auto content be made in the U.S. and Mexico, up from the regional requirement of 62.5 percent under NAFTA. It also requires that 40 to 45 percent of auto content be made by workers earning at least $16 per hour, while streamlining certification and verification of rules of origin to make enforcement easier. Passenger vehicles would also need to include a certain percentage of North American-produced steel and aluminum.

According to press reports and sources familiar with the negotiations, the two sides also agreed that vehicles that did not meet the content requirements would be bound to the World Trade Organization’s 2.5 percent tariff for "most favored nation" countries if made at an existing factory, but for nonconforming vehicles made at future greenfield sites the vehicle would be subject to tariffs of 20 to 25 percent, pending the U.S.’s determination on auto imports posing a national security threat. The USTR statement, however, made no mention of nonconforming vehicles.

The U.S. and Mexico agreed to review the deal after six years, softening a demand by American negotiators for a clause to kill the pact after five years unless it’s renewed by all parties.

'Long way to go'

Eric Miller, a trade and government relations consultant, cautioned that the preliminary deal lacks concrete details and is not yet a legal text that both sides can agree to.

“We shouldn’t exactly send the white smoke up yet," Miller said. “There’s a long way to go in order to get this resolved."

From an automotive perspective, Canada can live with the U.S.-Mexico deal, said Miller, who heads Rideau Potomac Strategy Group and counts Canadian auto interests among his clients.

Canada, which has also expressed concern about lost manufacturing jobs to Mexico, can accept the higher regional content value as well as the $16 per hour labor formulation because it proposed that to steer the U.S. away from its original demand that a certain percentage of each vehicle include U.S.-made components, he said. In addition, Canada produces very few vehicles that don’t conform to NAFTA content requirements, “so it’s not going to be a hill it dies on.”

The American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Detroit 3, said in a statement “we are optimistic that the new agreement will maintain and encourage the ongoing competitiveness of the United States and North American auto industries . ... We commend the United States and Mexican negotiators for their success and urge them to work with their Canadian counterparts to complete this negotiation.”

Foreign-brand automakers have told lawmakers they do not support raising local content requirements and that smaller companies could have trouble complying.

“We encourage a renewed focus on a three party agreement that includes Canada,” the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, said in a statement. “Furthermore, at the close of the negotiations between Mexico and the United States, the parties agreed to a potential cap of Mexican motor vehicle parts exports into the U.S. MEMA is concerned that this may serve to decrease American manufacturing jobs and exports and put U.S. businesses at a global disadvantage — all while increasing costs to consumers.”

Campaign promises

Monday’s developments helped fulfill campaign promises to renegotiate NAFTA or terminate it unless the U.S. received more favorable terms that reduced outsourcing of manufacturing jobs to low-wage Mexico and incentivized more domestic investment. The broad understanding between the U.S. and Mexico also addresses agriculture, textiles, intellectual property, digitial trade and other industry sectors.

How the administration could achieve a separate bilateral deal is uncertain because any new deal would require Congress to ratify it and the president has fast-track authority only to renegotiate NAFTA, a trilateral trade agreement. Ratification would take several months, at a minimum, and by then the House of Representatives could be in Democratic hands, making approval for any trade agreement more difficult.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto participated in the announcement by conference call and said he hoped Canada would be folded into the revised agreement.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland was reported heading to Washington to begin talks after Canada was sidelined while the U.S. and Mexico resolved their differences.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said he planned to send the Mexico trade deal to Congress on Friday, triggering a 90-day review period, although that seemed to presuppose that the deal will be finalized by then. Analysts said it was unlikely Canada could sign on so quickly.

“These guys like to use time as their pressure point. What they are trying to do is compel Canada to come back to the table and make a deal quickly, by saying ‘the bus is leaving so you better get on,’ “ Miller said.
