AFFECTED VEHICLES
CONDITION
^ Trunk lid does not open.
^ Trunk lid intermittently does not open.
^ Trunk lid lock unlocks and then immediately latches closed.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
After the rear trunk lid has been remotely unlocked, it must raise high enough to allow the trunk latch microswitch to disengage. When the trunk lid
does not open high enough to disengage the switch, the power close assist mechanism automatically relatches the trunk lid. After the trunk has been
automatically reclosed, the power open assist attempts to open the trunk lid. Because the trunk is latched closed, the pinch protection resistance is
exceeded. The system stops attempting to open the trunk, and the trunk lid remains closed.
The functionality of the safety release handle inside the trunk is not affected by this condition.
PRODUCTION SOLUTION
^ The plain rubber bump stops were replaced in series production with the spring-loaded bump stops. These new spring-loaded bump stops allow
the trunk lid to be lifted high enough to prevent the power close assist from reclosing the trunk lid after the trunk has been unlocked.
^ Installation of the spring-loaded bump stops was adjusted to optimize the operation of the trunk lid.
SERVICE
This service procedure utilizes spring-loaded bump stops to allow the trunk lid to raise high enough to disengage the microswitch after the trunk has
been unlocked, thus preventing the automatic relatching of the trunk lid.
1. Before proceeding with this repair solution, please ensure there are no electrical faults related to the rear trunk latch system. An electrical fault
could indicate the need for a different repair solution.
2. Note whether the vehicle contains spring-loaded bump stops, or plain rubber bump stops, and select the appropriate service procedure below.
Replacement of plain rubber bump stops

1. Remove the rubber cover from the bump stop by prying it off the plastic base.
2. Unscrew the existing left and right bump stops from the trunk lid. Twist counterclockwise to loosen and remove.
3. Remove the rubber cover and spring pin from the new spring-loaded bump stop assembly (part number 8H0 827 249 A).
Note:

Do not use metal pliers to unscrew the spring-loaded pin from the new part. The metal teeth will damage the soft plastic. Damage to the part will
prevent the rubber cover from seating properly on the bump stop.
4. Hand screw the new spring-loaded pin into the trunk lid.
5. If the spring pin is depressed, use a Philips screw driver and twist the pin counterclockwise 1/4 to 1/2 turn to allow the pin to eject.

6. Reinstall the rubber cover, making sure it is fully seated.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for the remaining side.
Adjustment of spring-loaded bump stops
1. Adjust the height of the new bump stop. Using your hand, turn the bump stop counterclockwise until it rests on the trunk loading sill when the
trunk lid is closed. Check through imprint.
Tip: It may be easier to adjust the height of the bump stop if the spring-loaded pin is depressed and rubber cover is removed, but it is not necessary.
Always reinstall the rubber cover when checking the height adjustment against the trunk sill.
2. Repeat for remaining side.
3. Test the functionality of the rear trunk lid. Ensure it is within all normal operating specifications.
