and navigation database:

Vehicles with MMI3G or MMI3G+ will have one of the following PR numbers:
l 8DY - MMI Navigation Plus (MMI3G and MMI3G+).
l 8DS - MMI Radio Plus (without navigation) for A6 model year 2010 - 2011 and Audi
Q7 2010 - 2013.

SERVICE
Important information to observe prior to performing the software update:
l Follow all steps for the update, otherwise possible hardware failure may occur.
l A second software update CD is required for vehicles with rear seat entertainment.
l Remove the update CD when the update is complete.
l Ensure battery voltage is at a minimum of 12.5 volts.
l Ensure a battery charger/maintainer is connected during the entire software
update.
l The ignition may remain switched off.
l Switch off all unnecessary consumers i.e., auto/daytime running light, air
conditioning, etc. during the entire software update.
l Switch off all cell phones and other electronic devices in and around the vehicle.
l Do not connect the VAS diagnostic tester during the software update.
l The software update takes place via the internal CD/DVD drive of the MMI main
unit.
l The navigation database update takes place via the internal SD card slot of the
MMI main unit.
l The illustrations displayed for the software update are generic and the text

within the illustrations may not exactly correspond with the vehicle that is being
updated.
l The illustrations are a mix of MMI3G and MMI3G+. The content between both are the
same.
PERFORMING THE SOFTWARE UPDATE
1. Switch MMI on.
2. Export customer data (vehicles with MMI3G and MMI3G+). Follow procedure in
attachment 2, Exporting and importing customer data .
3. Insert the MMI Update CD or the navigation database update SD card in the internal
drive of the MMI main unit (address 5F).
4. For A8 (D4) vehicles with rear seat entertainment, insert the second MMI update CD
in the internal drive of the rear main unit (address 7F). Use the SD card slot for
navigation database updates.
5. Wait at least 2 minutes for the system to analyze the data.
6. Start the update menu via the MMI main unit (address 5F) with the shortcut keys as
outlined in attachment 1, Shortcut key(s) description. Hold the buttons at the
same time for about 5 seconds until the display changes.
Tip: The software update can be abandoned at this point by holding the shortcut
keys for more than 5 seconds.
7. Activate the software update by pressing the lower right soft key (Figure 1).

8. After all the devices have registered, the update application automatically
changes to "Download server". Press the rotary (control) knob to activate the
update from CD/DVD or SD card for navigation update (Figure 2). The download
server can include various entries depending on the vehicle configuration.

9. Wait at least 20 seconds while the version description is read (Figure 3). If the
reading takes too long, it can be terminated by pressing Back or Return . If the
version cannot be read, check the software update CD/DVD or SD card for damage
(scratches or dirt) and replace it if necessary.

10. The release number of the available update is displayed following the read-out
process (Figure 4). Pressing the rotary (control) knob will continue the update
process.

12. All modules in the MMI are shown in the list that now appears (Figure 6). The
entries displayed in the list may vary depending on the vehicle configuration.

15. After confirming, the update starts automatically once the system has been
rebooted (Figure 9).

16. Once the system has rebooted, the download application may show a screen that
displays the update progress of various modules (Figure 10). As soon as all
modules have registered with the download application, the update process is
activated and the progress is shown on screen.

17. For A8 (D4) vehicles with rear seat entertainment; the rear screens will display
the update progress (Figure 11).
NOTE: It may be necessary to reboot the system during the update
programming session. This is carried out automatically and does not
require the user to take action. Once the system has rebooted, updating
is continued and the "Download progress" screen is displayed. The
MMI screen retracts on vehicles equipped with folding display units.

18. After the updating process for the rear main unit (7F) is completed, a "Download
in progress" message is displayed on the rear screens (Figure 12). All remaining
steps are viewed from the front display unit.

22. Scroll through the list using the rotary (control) knob. If a module has not
correctly updated (NOK), select Retry and restart the update.
Retry can only be selected if at least one module could not be programmed. If no
modules display NOK, select and activate Continue using the rotary (control) knob
(Figure 16).

23. After a successful update and before Software Version Management (SVM) requires
feedback documentation, the MMI must be restarted. Select Abort documentation and
the system will reboot automatically (Figure 17).

25. After the restart, perform the feedback documentation. To do this, connect a VAS
tester with an online connection and enter the corresponding SVM code. See
attachment 3, SVM feedback. Also, refer to TSB 2011732: 00 Software Version
Management (SVM), operating instructions.

26. Additional conditions may become evident after the update:
l language change does not work
l a language is not available
l car menu incomplete
l air conditioning does not work fully
l air suspension is not adjustable
These issues may be caused by an incomplete parameterization. Re-check the
SVM code and repeat the SVM spec/actual.
NOTE: If the feedback documentation is not carried out, the procedure must be
repeated at a later date, as DTC 03276 (Check Software Versions
Management) will be set (Figure 19). This DTC is automatically cleared
when feedback documentation has been successfully completed.

27. A reset via GFF may be performed if - after the feedback or after a parts
replacement - the message "check software version management" is logged.
It is necessary that the data in the vehicle database matches the version in the
vehicle. This resetting possibility does not replace the feedback after the
update.
Start GFF. All entries in the vehicle are shown. By selecting the entry "check
software version management" the test program starts. Follow the test program
instructions.
28. If, during the update, the display shown below appears (Figure 20), it could mean
a critical complaint (e.g. failure of the power supply) occurs. At that point, an
emergency download is automatically carried out. See attachment 5, Emergency
download.

All parts and service references provided in this TSB are subject to change and/or
removal. Always check with your Parts Department and service manuals for the latest
information.
SVM FEEDBACK
The new vehicle configuration must be transmitted to Audi after every software update
(also for multi-stage MMI updates) to support the fault elimination process. The VAS
tester is equipped with Software Versions Management (Audi SVM) for this purpose.
Connect an Internet-enabled VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 (with latest Base CD and Brand CD
version) to the vehicle's diagnostic connector and hook this up to your workshop
network (CPN).
1. Switch on the ignition.
2. Start Guided Fault Finding.
NOTE: To invoice for the work carried out, the vehicle data must be transmitted
correctly and completely. For this reason, please answer the questions at the
end of Guided Fault Finding regarding the workshop order number, vehicle
chassis number and success of work carried out. Transmit this information
using your Internet-enabled VAS tester.
If you fail to do so, the work cannot be invoiced under warranty.

3. Select Audi as the brand.
4. Select the vehicle type, e.g. "Audi A8 2003".
5. The tester will then establish the vehicle identification. If this does not take
place automatically, carry out vehicle identification as usual.
6. Select the engine.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
8. The "vehicle system test" will now be carried out, during which all fault memories
will be read. If necessary, follow the additional on-screen instructions.
9. When all control units have been requested, press the "Next" arrow (bottom right).
10. Select the "Function/Component Selection" option using the "Go to" function.

26. Exit Guided Fault Finding by selecting "Exit" in the "Go to" function.

27. The fault memory for all control units will now be automatically deleted.
28. Answer the questions at the end regarding the workshop order, vehicle chassis
number and success of work carried out.
29. Transmit your answers via the workshop network.
30. Switch off the ignition.
31. If satellite reception (in the workshop) is poor, update programming may result in
the navigation system losing its location details. For this reason, please check
that the navigation system (if available) is functioning correctly. To do this,
press the "NAV" button to switch to the NAV menu.
32. Select and press the appropriate MMI soft key to activate the navigation map. If a
map display opens showing the vehicle's correct position, the navigation system
has been initialized and you can leave out the next step.
33. If only an arrow is displayed on an empty map, the vehicle must be positioned in

the open with the MMI switched on for five to ten minutes.
MMI update programming is now complete. Remove the update CD from the vehicle; you
can use the CD to update the MMI in other vehicles.
NAVIGATION DATA UPDATE
A navigation data update essentially follows the same steps as update programming.
1. Please use the relevant navigation data DVD or SD card as your medium.
2. The initial process is exactly the same as the MMI update: steps 1 - 9.
3. Please note the following differences: At step 10, a screen appears displaying the
database information for the navigation DVD.
4. Several DVDs may be required for the navigation data update. In this case, the
system will automatically prompt you to change the DVDs.
5. Feedback documentation in Software Versions Management is not necessary; however
an activation of the data is required via a GFF SVM activation test plan.

EXPORT AND IMPORT OF CUSTOMER DATA (MMI NAVIGATION PLUS)
Important information on the export and import of customer data
To back up the customer data you need an SD card or USB stick with at least 256 MB.
1. The export / import of customer data is only possible with MMI 3G and MMI 3G+
(Navigation Plus) systems.
2. The export / import of customer data can be used to install the customer data when
replacing the MMI main unit (5F). The following data is included for the export /
import:

a. address book entries

3. The export file with the customer data is coded. The coding can be used by the
customer in the MMI.
¡ MMI3G CAR / SETUP -> data coding
¡ MMI3G+ MENU -> Setup MMI -> data coding
The standard coding for both systems is "MMI3G".
To reactivate the imported customer data the personal code is needed.
Explain the coding to the customer, otherwise the personal data is not protected
EXPORT OF CUSTOMER DATA
1. Start the update menu with the respective shortcut keys, which may be found in the
Shortcut key(s) attachment. Hold the buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds
until the display changes.
2. Press the upper left soft key to select "Settings".
NOTE: The content of the Jukebox cannot be saved.
NOTE: This display can be left at any time by holding the shortcut keys used
to start the update menu.

3. In the settings menu select "export".

5. Use the rotary (control) pushbutton to select one of the two options.

6. After the successful export a message is displayed. Press the rotary (control)
pushbutton to return to the settings menu. The selected SD card or USB stick now
contains a coded file with the customer data.

7. By pressing and holding the update menu buttons for more than 5 seconds you can
leave the user interface.
IMPORT OF CUSTOMER DATA
1. Perform steps 1 and 2 of the export customer data process. In the settings menu
select "import".

5. By pressing and holding the update menu buttons for more than 5 seconds you can
leave the user interface.
6. After importing the customer data see "Activation of the imported customer data"
below.
ACTIVATION OF THE IMPORTED CUSTOMER DATA
1. The imported customer data is only visible in the MMI after the customer code has
been confirmed.
2. After an ignition cycle a password query is automatically shown in the MMI. When
selecting "Perform now" the customer code can be entered. If "ask later" is
selected, the password query will only appear again after an ignition cycle. If
you want to discard the import, select "Do not ask again".

3. Using the rotary (control) pushbutton the customer code can be entered. After
confirming the selection with OK the data becomes available. After an automatic
system restart the imported customer data is available in the MMI.

4. If an incorrect code is entered, a message appears. To repeat the input, switch
the ignition off and on. Then the password query appears again.

EMERGENCY DOWNLOAD
During the emergency download only a restricted operating screen is available, which
merely shows the status of the download. No input is necessary.

The deleting and programming are performed again a few times, until all the MMI
components have been updated. Wait until the programming is completed and the system
automatically restarts.
A possible cause for an emergency download can be a failure of the power supply.
Make sure that the power supply is available during the update.
If there are problems reading the Update CD/DVD during an emergency update, the
following screen is shown:
NOTE: After an emergency download the software update must be restarted
manually to ensure that all system components are updated (start with step
6 of the updating instructions in TSB 2028141).

In this case change the Update CD/DVD. After the change the emergency update
automatically restarts. No further user input is necessary.
