AFFECTED VEHICLES

CONDITION

The front luggage compartment does not latch closed either intermittently or consistently.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

127

^ The emergency release Bowden cable is connected to a pin that is moved by the electric hood release actuator. The Bowden cable for the outer

hood latches are also connected to this pin. When the actuator is engaged to open the hood, the metal catch on the end of the emergency release

cable can become jammed between a metal bracket and the slider pin (Figure 1 and 2).

^ When the catch is jammed, the additional Bowden cable for the hood latches is put in a constant state of tension not allowing the hood to latch

closed.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

The production solution was to install of a round clamping washer on the slider pin to prevent the metal catch from sliding down on the pin

becoming jammed.

SERVICE

The service solution is to apply a round clamping washer on to the slider pin, preventing the emergency release Bowden cable from dropping down

too low on the slider pin, where it can become jammed.

1. Remove the luggage compartment liner according to the instructions listed in ElsaWeb.

Select Body >> Interior >> 70 Interior Trim >> Removal and Installation >> Luggage Compartment Liner

Note:

When removing the rubber seal around the luggage compartment, be careful not to pull on the seal with too much force during the removal process.

Pulling too hard on the seal will stretch it, thus lengthening the seal and not allow it to fit during reinstallation.

2. Once the latch pin is visible, disconnect the white plastic end of the actuator by sliding it off the end of the actuator by pulling up.

3. Disconnect the metal catch ends of the two Bowden cables. At this point there should be nothing on the slider pin.

4. Use the clamping washer, 441863987B, as a template and cut out a piece of round adhesive felt tape, 533867910A; ensuring the circle of tape is

the same diameter as the round clamping washer. Additional strips may be needed to cover the entire top surface of the clamping washer. The felt

tape will prevent the metal catch ends of the Bowden cables from rattling against the metal clamping washer.

5. Cut out a small center hole from the felt tape.

6. Combine the clamping washer and the felt tape before installing it on to the slider pin.

7. Place the clamping washer over the slider pin (Figure 5). The goal is to install the washer high enough on the pin where it prevents the emergency

release cable from becoming jammed.

8. Reinstall the emergency release cable, the Bowden cable for the hood latch, and the white plastic actuator arm.

9. Reinstall the luggage compartment liner and seal.

10. Check the operation of the hood release to verify the robustness of the repair.
