Vehicle Information
Condition
The customer may report that the Easy Entry function of the power adjustable steering column intermittently does not work.
Technical Background
The Easy Entry system is a standard convenience function of the power adjustable steering column. When the Easy Entry feature is turned on (Figure
1, B pressed in), the steering column moves to the parked position after the ignition has been turned off and the key has been removed. The parked
position provides more room between the driver and the steering wheel. When the ignition is turned back on, the steering column returns to the last
stored position.
The steering column's position is stored in the memory of the vehicle electrical system control unit, J519 (address word 09).
The seat memory (optional equipment) also stores the steering column's position in the memory seat / steering column adjustment control unit, J316
(address word 36), and is independent of the vehicle electrical system control unit.
During the Easy Entry process, the driver may unknowingly influence the last stored driving position in four different ways:
 Audi Q7 Quattro 402
^ If the driver inadvertently touches or bumps the adjustment knob (Figure 1, A) and moves the steering column when exiting or entering the
vehicle, the new position is then stored as the last driving position in the vehicle electrical system control unit. The next time the ignition is
switched on, the steering column will only change position slightly or not at all, appearing as if the Easy Entry position was the last known
driving position.
^ After removing the key from the ignition switch, the customer operates one of the electrical system components (the radio, for example) when the
electrical bus systems have entered sleep mode. When the electrical bus systems are awoken without the ignition switch turned on, the current
position of the steering column is then stored as the new driving position before the electrical bus systems return to sleep mode.
^ The memory may be lost due to the battery not being completely charged (vehicle parked fora long period, aging battery, etc.).
^ If the vehicle is aging and has a weak battery, convenience functions are switched off when more power is needed to ensure that the engine starts
correctly. The Easy Entry function will appear to not function.
Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
Instruct the customer to re-program the desired position of the steering column or to use the seat memory button (if available) to return the steering
column to the memorized position.
The position selected with the seat memory button is automatically stored in the vehicle electrical system control unit.
